 "One-time only, but wow...." (about: 2003)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 The 'unofficial' DC marathon probably won't happen again, but suffice to say that the people who threw it together in only three days deserve accolades (and a free vacation) for doing such an outstanding job. The course was already planned, and putting it up on the concrete sidewalks made it tough, but we still had the scenery (plus the added challenge of jumping over the occasional trash can or baby stroller.) The aid stations were amazing - in fact, they had better food than LA (ie., Oreos at mile 22 and cookies/bagels at the end, whereas LA only had bananas and oranges - plenty of those in DC too). Local running clubs and shops donated piles of GU, water, gatorade, etc. - no entry fee to pay for it! I don't know where all those great volunteers came from, but they did a trememdous job and remembered everything, including the vaseline and the painkillers (one thoughtful soul had giant bottles of Advil and Tylenol near the end.) Lots of the locals came outside to watch and cheer us on, too. A good example of what determined runners can accomplish in response to an irrational race cancellation at the end of a brutal winter training season. |
