(about: 2011) 6-10 previous marathons \| 1 Louisiana Missions Marathon COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 Our group of 7 came up from New Orleans, we are experienced road marathoners but none of us had ever run anything like this. It was my first ultra and first trail run and I loved it.The course is beautiful,and the aid stations are very well stocked with water, Gatorade , and a wide selection of candy,cookies,gels,etc. You can put your own supplies at the start/finish area but you won't need them.We were concerned about creek crossings but there where none, on a wet day I think the course would be slippery in places but not for our race.The course is 90% shaded and all trail except for a few short sections on gravel or blacktop near the start. There are plenty of roots to step over and some steep downhills.Part of the fun was not knowing what to expect, my GPS was useless ( the miles were marked on trail)and something new was around every turn.I highly recommend it for anyone looking for something different or just a little adventure.

The hills are bigger than you remember with each loop! They are not big - just gradual - and there are plenty of them. We ran the 50K, which was the 2 times around the course; then there's a short way past the chimp haven back to the last 4 miles of the same loop. If you need spectators this is not the race for you, but if you love to run through the woods... this is it!

The organizers are great with plenty of good stuff at the aid stations. A must-do for trail runners! Hills in Louisiana?? You bet!
J. T. from Muscatine, IA (12/13/2009) "Fantastic Trail Run" (about: 2009) 11-50 previous marathons \| 1 Louisiana Missions Marathon COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 1 This was a great trail run. It was everything I hoped it would be. It was rooty, rough single track on a lot of small roller-coaster hills. For a single track course, I'd say it's average for difficulty. Throughout the 50K, I could hear the monkeys screaming at the refuge next door. In the latter half of the loop you run through a bamboo forest. Trail runs are usually small-scale, and this one was no exception; but don't let that fool you... it's a quality race. Also, it's trail so it can be difficult for newer marathoners, but don't let that deter you. One of the runners who went with me did his third marathon and first trail run. He slowed his pace up and took his time on the first lap, and ran very well with this plan. He finished well and loved the race.

G. from New Orleans, LA (11/22/2009) "Challenging, but a very pleasant experience" (about: 2009) 1 previous marathon \| 1 Louisiana Missions Marathon COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 1 Maybe I was just too naive going into it (my first trail marathon, and my first ultra), but this course was tougher than I expected. The roller-coaster trails mentioned in other comments about this race are real and they take a lot out of the legs if you're not used to running on them (I train on nothing but flat roads). The first 13.1 are more social; I managed to run with a group or at least one other person. The next 13.1 were mostly alone, slowly transitioning from a run, to a slow run, to a jog, to a death shuffle with some walking. The last five were just tough; they repeated the last few miles of the loop, which are some of the tougher miles. But the aid stations are great and close together, the setting is beautiful (we caught some nice weather too), and the organization is top-notch.

A. from Baton Rouge, LA (11/10/2008) "Excellent, challenging course" (about: 2008) 6-10 previous marathons \| 1 Louisiana Missions Marathon COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 I did the half marathon, which was an absolute blast, and I will definitely be back. The course was mainly on rooty, roller coaster, single-track, but there were also brief distances on gravel, pavement, and pine needle-covered horse trails. The aid stations were well-stocked, and I could have actually left my hand-held water bottle behind. The long-sleeved shirt is made of tech fabric that resembles cotton - very nice, and an appealing shade of green. The only suggestion for improvement I might make would be to have more bright orange marking on the course at the point where we ran through the open field, and on the dark gravel road, just to reassure runners that they are on the right path. Overall, though, this race gets very high marks. If you stay in Shreveport, visit the impressive Norton Art Gallery.

B. from Missouri (11/10/2008) "Noteworthy Trail Marathon" (about: 2008) 11-50 previous marathons \| 1 Louisiana Missions Marathon COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 1 Whether you're new to trail running or a veteran, this is a great event. There is a half marathon, full marathon and 50K option. Organization is excellent. Fully stocked aid stations (sports drink, water, pretzels, chewy candies, peanuts, M & M's) about every 3 miles. Nice course. Not too difficult for first-timers, but at the same time, still a good course for the more experienced trail runners. They offered spaghetti after the race, which I thought was a nice gesture. Nice, technical, long-sleeved shirt, low registration fee, small crowd, nice course, and good organization all make this a race worth considering. My only suggestions for improvement would be to require runners to carry their own water bottles to fill up at the aid stations. While I'm sure the cups got picked up by volunteers, it bothered me to see them lying on the beautiful trails. Also, a medal differentiating which race you completed would be nice. It's not a huge deal, but just something that may want to be considered in the future. All in all, a great race. Thank you so much!

(about: 2008) 50+ previous marathons COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 With the explosion of interest in trail running/ultras, it is getting harder and harder to get into many of them, despite their growing in size. That runs counter to the very attraction of running trails. This race is a great size, the course (while nearly all single-track of varying terrain) allows for passing, and there is enough support such that you don't need to carry anything. Keep up the good work, and don't tell anyone else.

The aid stations are great, with lots of variety. The trail is tough, but well maintained and clearly marked. I have run the half twice and it's on the calendar this year.

(about: 2007) 11-50 previous marathons \| 1 Louisiana Missions Marathon COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 Outstanding race for anyone who loves a challenge. You spend your time concentrating on the hairpin turns, and you forget about being tired. The organization was second to none. First race that I've ever run where the starter waited for everyone to finish using the restrooms. Can't say enough about my entire experience. I highly recommend it to any and all who want to experience a true trail marathon!
