"Tough, scenic 23 mile race" (about: 2015)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Breck Crest Mountain Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 2

The Breckenridge Crest was an experience I'll never forget (for better or worse hehe). Note that is THIS IS NOT A FULL MARATHON. The race is 23 miles and I'm eventually going to re-do Colorado for my 50 states (which I'm happy to do as I visit family there often). That being said this race is truly challenging and as a Manhattan resident without access to altitude training I was much less prepared than most participants. There are steep inclines during the race and at one point almost the entire field walks up the trail as its simply too steep to run. I myself walked much more than the average participant (due to my trouble with the altitude) so I had lots of time to take in the wonderful views and nature surrounding me. The trail is rough terrain. It felt like every step I took anything could happen and I did have a few good spills over the course of the race before I resigned myself to mostly walking.

Organization wise the race is solid. The director and volunteers were very friendly and knowledgeable. The pre race dinner and post race food were great. During the course Id recommend bringing your own water bottle (which I of course didn't) as there are not many aid stations and they are up to 4-5 miles apart. The course is marked with pink ribbons but it did feel like in the second half I was on the course for long periods of time with no sight of a ribbon or any other race participant. As far as swag participants receive a short sleeve tech shirt that has the name of the race but no date or distance. Since the shirt simply says Breckenridge Crest a non-participant would have to look closely to conclude its a race shirt at all (but who really cares). There aren't spectators but the people you meet on the trail do provide encouragement.

This was the most challenging race I've ever participated in. Between the altitude and constant hills I can assure you at the end of 23 miles I was not sad to be finished. It felt like most of the participants were locals who also do ultra-marathons. In fact I hope that others share their experience as this race is clearly not meant for people who do their running in Central Park. All that being said Im thankful for the experience. I now know what its like to be on a course for more than six hours and have a different perspective on the experience of slower runners (my previous longest time had been 4:10 in a race I took relatively easy). Do this race for the challenge and the experience&but not necessarily for your 50 states.
