Regarded as one of the toughest marathons in North America, Ruth finished the with a time of 3:56.27. The marathon took place at Mount Mitchell, which reaches it's peak at 6,684' -- the highest in eastern America.

The Mount Mitchell Challenge, along with the Black Mountain Marathon, will take place Saturday with more than 300 runners taking part in both races. The annual event is struggling for cash after going massively over budget last year despite a major injection of public money. Organisers say they are struggling to pay for big-name runners at this year's event and may have to scrap a TV deal to screen highlights. Running in rainy and cool conditions that worsened as the wind picked up in the race's second half, Strijakov finished in 2 hours, 26 minutes, 34 seconds, winning the marathon.
 
   Sultanova-Zhadnova Dominates Women's Bank of America Marathon (TBO)
The 44-year old Russian won the event in 2 hours, 41 minutes and 26 seconds, beating the rest of the women's field by almost seven minutes. It's her second consecutive Gasparilla marathon victory.
