"You have to LOVE A DISNEY EVENT" (about: 2008)

6-10 previous marathons | 3 Disney World Marathons
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

Pros:

Expo check was easy - with better vendors than prior years.

The start area is easy to work you way through, with plenty of close parking.

The 6:00 start in the dark with the lights of Epcot turned on - amazing.

You've got to love running through Epcot, Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom and Disney Studios. I just wish there could be more time in the parks.

If you want to the the Disney characters, they were all out in force. This year they were dispersed throughout the course, even on the some of the highways between the parks. It made for a nice change of pace and scenery.

Finish line is smooth and efficient.

Plenty of water and PowerAde on the course. Thank you for two bananas and two gel stations also. Plenty of volunteers who were helpful and friendly.

GREAT MICKEY MEDAL for the 15th year.

First aid stations with BioFreeze, Vaseline and Tylenol - boy, does this help on the second half of the course.

Fireworks at the beginning with the countdown of 15 explosions.

Cons:

Instead of packaged muffins, have bagels.

Not many fans on most of the course - but a lot more than the past two years.

I have already signed up for the 2009 Goofy today - so I will see you again.

First Marathon

I could not ask for a better marathon! The weather, the water stations, the volunteers, the expo, and fans showing support were awesome. This was a great experience and I plan on making this marathon a habit.

Congratulations to all finishers - especially Goofy's Challengers!

I was hesitant going into this due to 2007 comments; however, I had an overall fantastic Goofy experience.

Goofy Challenge - this is a fantastic opportunity and you feel a brotherhood with every other person you see wearing the same wristband as you.

Course - although some of the park territory is back lot-type, the park running is great and the characters make it fun. When I hit MGM, I knew I had it in the bag. The time IN the parks makes up for the time OUT of the parks. I ALMOST decided to forgo any kind of time goal, take my camera and get a picture with every character I came across, but couldn't bring myself to do it. Others could and should be celebrated for their ability to let loose and have fun.

Sponsors - Sharpie gets the sponsor of the year award for the sign outlay during the "boring" stretches (the average person eats 14 acres of pizza a year... is that really true???).

Corrals - yes, you do have to walk quite a ways, but get over it. When you are getting ready to do 13 or 26, what is an additional 1/2 mile to warm up?

Participants - it might have to do with my corral start (purposely had a less favorable one in 1/2 than full so I could run with my wife), but there seemed to be a ton more walkers (stretching across the road) in the 1/2 than the full.

Volunteers - very friendly and helpful.

Water stops - one there every time I started to get thirsty.

Expo - no problems at all. After spending a weekend at Disney, I wasn't looking to spend money at the expo.

Crowd support - can be limited at times, but is there when you need it. When it is there... it is abundant.

Medals - excellent.

Choir at mile 13 of the 1/2 and 26 of the full - who are these people??? I've never been more inspired in a race. Words cannot describe the emotional impact (especially if you have any kind of "Jesus" bone in your body).

Lodging - stay at the Polynesian... no problems at all.

Start time - yes it is early, but you don't HAVE to HAVE your bags checked by 5:00 a.m. as instructions indicate. Make a good lodging choice and sleep in a little later; it is worth the money.

Cost - this isn't cheap. Address that issue up front and enjoy yourself.

Only issue / suggestion:
$1/minute massage tent??? I assume the proceeds went to charity (I didn't take the time to investigate).

Medals at the park??? I'm all for wearing a race shirt, but wearing medals to the parks afterwards?? How in the heck do you ride the Tower of Terror or Rock 'n Roller Coaster with those on?

Goofy picture - put Goofy in the Goofy tent so Goofy participants can get a picture afterwards.

Goofy chip - Have a Goofy timing chip to purchase... not just Mickey.

The only thing worth mentioning is the relatively narrow paths they let you run through (one lane on two-lane roads). With thousands of runners, slower runners become moving obstacles.

Sure, parts of it are boring. But the sections that are in the parks are quite memorable. I forgot the run entirely, and for those sections I became a tourist. Plenty of Disney characters cheering you on.

Not too many spectators, but then again the race starts early. Who would want to come in and brave the marathon traffic anyway?

Super-organized races; get your running fix, and still be nice to your family at the same time. How can you lose? Do the Goofy Challenge to get a medal haul!

What a great race. Volunteers rocked, and spectators were great. I did the GOOFY Challenge for the second time, but participated with TNT this time around. The consistent GO TEAM!! kept me going. I already signed up for the GOOFY Challenge for next year....

"Excellent Race!!" (about: 2008)

This was my first Disney Marathon and second in the U.S. I found it to be well organized, with plenty of water/hydration stops, medical stops, and food to go around. The scenery through the parks was wonderful, but running around the parks got a little drab at times. The expo was not as exciting as I thought it would be. There weren't many vendors at all. I thought there would have been more. Except for that, it was a great experience that I would do again!!

After running in that nightmare in Chicago, this race was just what I needed to remind me that I still love to run! I ran the Goofy and was very suprised and happy with the extra water stops, especially during the full marathon. The Marathon and GOOFY medal were great and we actually got a GOOFY shirt! My first but not last GOOFY!

This was my 14th Disney Marathon and Third GOOFY, and each year Disney does a fantastic job. What other marathon or half marathon lets you run through your childhood?

The medals are the best, and the new GOOFY and 15th anniversary Mickey were the greatest.

Volunteers as always do the best job, and they sure provided much-needed inspiration at mile 21 to get me to the finish.

All I can say is: if you are thinking of becoming GOOFY, register soon.

It was a great time. It was well staffed and the volunteers were exceptional. There was plenty to look at and it really helped make the time pass quickly.

"Great Atmosphere for a Marathon" (about: 2008)

1 previous marathon | 1 Disney World Marathon

As expected, it was a great marathon. Spectators were everywhere, especially as you come into the parks (4 parks total). The only hills are bridge overpasses. The day was humid, reaching close to 75 degrees near the end of my race. I couldn't believe the number of water stops; you never had to go thirty. The start was well organized and didn't take much time to cross the start mat. I ran the Disney Half Marathon last year and the lines at the expo for packet pickup seemed to be more organized and move quicker this year. Great for first-timer or any-timer.
