   Drugs chief warns Olympic cheats (BBC Sport UK)
John Fahey, new head of the World Anti-Doping Agency, has warned drug cheats that testing at the Beijing Olympics will be more stringent than ever before. The Chinese authorities have built a high-end labratory to be staffed by highly-trained personnel. Fahey was a former finance minister in the Australian government.

   Headphone ban falls on Miami runners' deaf ears (Miami Herald Tribune)
For safety reasons, USA Track and Field, the sport's governing body, prohibits the use of iPods and other headphone devices in running events; but the Miami Marathon is not enforcing the ban. Race director Robert Pozo does agree that headphones, mp3 players, sunglasses with flap-down speakers and the like are hazardous, but he is following the lead of the Walt Disney World and New York City Marathons.

In final weeks prior to marathon day rather than tapering, sports physiologists such as Greg McMillan think that mileage should only be lowered minumally in those final weeks rathern than doing the traditional tapering. Two weeks out, run fourteen to fifteen miles at an easy pace for your Sunday long run and make your last speed workout ten days out, Also, make sure you do get enough carbs without gaining weight.

   Daily exercise dramatically lowers men's death rates (EurekAlert)
A study reported in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association states that increased exercise capacity reduces the risk of death in African-American and Caucasian men. Researchers classified the subjects into fitness categories based on their treadmill performance, analyzing oxygen consumption in proportion to body weight. The study found that “highly fit” men had half the risk of death compared to “low fit” men. Men who achieved “very highly fit” levels had a 70 percent lower risk of death compared to those in the “low fit” category.

Yuri Kano who debbuted at last year's Osaka Ladies International Marathon will be all business in the 2008 race. With hopes of qualifying for the Japanese Olympic team, Kano has stiff competition in the field with the likes of Japan's top long-distance runner Kayoko Fukushi and others. Her finish at the 2007 Osaka race was 2:24:43, the fifth-fastest debut time by a Japanese.

   Miami Marathon a welcome escape for Kenyan runners (Miami Herald)
Five elite racers from Kenya escape from the violence occurring in their home country to participate in the 2008 Miami Marathon. They have altered their lives - for training they try to stay within 5 kilometers of his home. These runners are defending champion Jared Nyamboki, Wilson Chepkwony, Sammy Nyamongo, William Serem and Wesley Chelule.

   Gebrselassie takes Lisbon path enroute to Beijing (IAAF)
Ethiopia’s World Marathon record holder Haile Gebrselassie announced that he will compete in the 2008 Lisbon Half Marathon. He has not fully opted out of running the marathon at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Gebrselassie will visit the marathon course and make a final assessment.

   Kayoko Fukushi to make marathon debut at Osaka Ladies Marathon (IAAF)
Triple national record holder in the half marathon (1:07:26), female Kayoko Fukushi, will be making a highly anticipated marathon debut at the 2008 Osaka Ladies Marathon. Fukushi, the greatest women’s track runner in the Japanese track history, is a national record holder in the 5000m and 3000m, a six-time national 10,000m champion and a five-time national 5000m champion. Also vying for victory are defending champion Yumiko Hara and Yuri Kano winner of the 2007 Hokkaido Marathon.

   Miami Marathon will have Olympic feel (The Sun-Sentinel)
With the participation of US Olympic team member Brian Sell in the Miami Marathon's Half Marathon, race organizers are encouraging spectators to wear red, white and blue and bring small flags to wave and help promote the "Miami to Beijing" theme at Sunday's race. Other Hansons-Brooks Distance Project will be participating as well. Hansons-Brooks Distance Project. Because of the political unrest in Kenya, Chemokil Chilapong, Evans Ogaro and Penuel Nyagaka Osoro were forced to withdraw from the marathon.

   John Hancock Financial Announces Return of Defending Champions to Run 2008 Boston Marathon (PR Wire)
John Hancock Financial, a principal sponsor of the Boston Marathon, announced the return 2007 champions Kenyan Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot and Russian Lidiya Grigoryeva for the 112th running of the esteemed Boston Marathon. Cheruiyot will be going for his fourth win which would put him in the league of marathon greats Bill Rodgers and Clarence DeMar who have won the race four or more times.
 
   Defending Champions to Return to Boston (Race Results Weekly)
Organizers of the Boston Marathon announced the participation of 2007 defending champions Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot and Lidiya Grigoryeva for the 112th Boston Marathon. The Boston Marathon will actually be the second race of an extraordinary weekend of marathon running. On Sunday, April 20, the USA Olympic Team Trials - Women's Marathon will be contested on a special criterium course through Boston's Back Bay and nearby Cambridge.

The 11th annual Myrtle Beach marathon has squeaked into the top 10 USA marathons according to Runner's World editor Bart Yasso. The race has surpassed longer running and larger races as one of the nations best organized and scenic races. Race co-organizer, Kelly McPherson, says the the marathon is on pace, once again, to surpass the 10,000 registration limit this year.

   Former winners return to battle on faster course in Rotterdam (IAAF)
Kenyans Joshua Chelanga and Jimmy Muindi, former champinos of the Rotterdam Marathon, will return to the 2008 marathon. Last year's winner Chelanga won under warm conditions in 2:08:21. Muindi had a personal best at the 2005 Rotterdam Marathon which he incidentally won in 2:07:50.

   Music lovers run into opposition (Sign on San Diego)
The trend seems to be growing to ban the use of wearing headphones and portable music players during races. Mostly affecting recreation runners, the concept has also been adopted by the Carlsbad Marathon. The ban, passed in December 2006 by USA Track & Field, the sport's governing body, has sparked a national debate among runners.

The 2008 Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon is not just another race for the India’s top two marathoners Lyngkhoi Binning and Ram Singh Yadav who are aiming for a qualifying time for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The qualifying time for the marathon is 2:18:20. Last year, Binning clocked the fastest national finish at 2:17:53. While defending champion Yadav has a personal best of 2:17:52, his best time of 2007 was 2:18:22.

Kristen Henehan and Lisa Thomas have achieved their qualifying times for the U.S. Olympic marathon trials in two different ways. Both raced against each other for the first time, competing down the stretch at the Marine Corps Marathon. Missing the qualification mark, both ran the 2008 Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon and qualified with a 2:45:12 and 2:46:11 respectively.

Lance Armstrong, the seven-time Tour de France champion qualified for Boston by finishing the 2007 ING New York City Marathon in 2 hours, 46 minutes and 43 seconds. At 36 Armstrong easily qualified for the Boston Marathon by running under 3:15 for his 35-39-year-old age group.

The Japan Association of Athletics Federations announced Thursday that Toshinari Suwa, a second consecutive Olympic hopeful, and Japan-based Kenyan and defending champion Daniel Njenga will join the elite field for the February race. The Tokyo Marathon is the second of three Domestic Olympice Trial Qualifiers.

   Gebrselassie Warns He Could Miss Beijing Marathon (Guardian Unlimited)
Just one day after Halle Gebrselassie ran the second fastest time in marathon history, the famed 34 year old Ethiopian warned the world that he may not run in Beijing. The current world record holder suffers from a breathing condition that compromises his running in high pollution environments like Beijing. He is pleading that something be done to reduce the smog in the city where the 2008 Olympics will be held.

   10,000 runners to compete in Sunday's sold-out Carlsbad Marathon (Coastal)
With 10,000 runners scheduled to race in one of the three scenic races this coming Sunday, it is easy to understand why registration for both races closed three weeks ago and organizers are not accepting more entries. Race director Flanagan said local charities still have a few entries they are auctioning as fundraisers.

The day before the 42.195 kilometer onslaught was spent on mental preparations for many of the veteran runners. Ian Ladbrooke, the elite athlete coordinator stated that he would be surprised if John Kelai does not win the race again. The fastest time entering the race is that of Kosgei, a 41 year old from Kenya and winner of the Belgrade Marathon in 2006. His personal best of 2:07.09 out classes the field but only slightly.

   Japanese Running coach takes new role on China team (Daily Yomiuri)
Shinya Takeuchi, adviser to the Chinese women's marathon team for the Beijing Olympics, feels that there are many runners who are hungry for success, but Japanese athletes lack that hunger. Following the closure of the UFJ track club in 2005, Takeuchi has increasingly been coaching Chinese athletes as part of the country's drive to win a lot of medals at the Olympics. He has coached silver medalist Zhou Chunxiu and Zhu Xiaolin to second and fourth place respectively in the women's marathon at the 2007 IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Osaka.

   Fukushi falls flat in marathon debut (Daily Yomiuri Online)
Kayoko Fukushi has much to think about following her disastrous debut at the 2008 Osaka Marathon. A favorite in the race, Fukushi was the runaway leader at the halfway mark, but her lack of race tactics or her ability to pull off the pace lead to a disappointing nineteenth place finish. Mara Yamauchi of Britain won the race in a 2:25:10.
 
 Dubai Marathon

   Magical Martin books Olympic Marathon place (Westmeath Examiner)
After a set-back over a visa difficulty forcing him to drop out of the Houston Marathon, Irishman Martin Fagan qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing at the Dubai Marathon; but the qualifier did not come without its own share of pain. Fagan was on a 2:10 pace, then encountered spasms in his back and right hip after the 25k mark. He crossed the line collapsing in pain and was brought to hospital; but managed the qualification time.

The 2008 Dubai Marathon had some top running heroes headlining the race, but there are many that had not had a mention, such as 84-year-old Swede Sven Ol-Mars who finished the race in just over six hours. Ol-Mars has run over fifty marathons.

   Sammy Korir Becomes First Man to Run 10 sub-2:09 Marathons (IAAF)
Following the 2008 Dubai Marathon, Sammy Korir became the first man to run ten sub-2:09 marathons in a lifetime. Korir's personal best is 2:04:56 at the 2003 Berlin Marathon where he paced Paul Tergat to the former world record. Stefano Baldini is scheduled to run the 2008 Flora London Marathon where he could become the first man with fourteen lifetime sub-2:10s.
