Despite a rain-soaked course, Patrick Makau won the Berlin Marathon with a time of 2 hours 5 minutes and 8 seconds only two seconds ahead of the runner-up, Geoffrey Mutai.

Kenya's Patrick Makau outlasted fellow countryman Geoffrey Mutai in a replay of their battle at April's Rotterdam Marathon to win the Berlin Marathon in 2:05:08, two seconds ahead of Mutai. Ethopia's Aberu Kebede outperformed her countrywoman Bezunesh Bekele by a minute to take the women's race in 2:23:58.
