   Michigan woman beats age in Akron Marathon win (Boston Herald)
Sarah Plaxton, 40 of Highland, Michigan, took the women’s lead early and held it for the entire length of the 26.2 mile race, winning in 2 hours 57 minutes and 56 seconds.Oxana Khokhlova of Cincinnati was second in 2 hours 59 minutes and 17 seconds. The men's winner was Birhanu Wukaw Zeleke, a native of Ethiopia who lives in Washington, D.C. Wukaw pulled ahead of last year’s winner, Joshua Koros of Byron Center, Michigan, 14 miles into the race to win in 2 hours 23 minutes an 13 seconds. Koros was second in 2 hours 26 minutes and 29 seconds.

   Berlin Marathon a great experience. (Malvern Gazette)
Mark Cawthorne, a fitness instructor, paced a friend to a five hour and thirty minute marathon at the Berlin Marathon. The heat of the day made the race a little more challenging. Cawthorne finished the race along with 38,000 other runners who made the Berling Marathon a special event.

   Haile Gebrselassie sets marathon world record (Seattle Times)
With the help of several paces, Haile Gebrselassie smashed his own world record in the marathon by running 2 hours 3 minute and 59 seconds. He is the first man to ever run under 2 hours and 4 minutes for the marathon.

   Bank of America Chicago Marathon Set for 31st Running on Sunday, Oct. 12 (The Earth Times)
Bank of America has increased runner's amenities for the 31 Chicago Marathon. Five new aide stations have been added to the 15 already in place. This year's theme of 29 neighborhoods, 1 great race is designed to showcase the communities of Chicago and bring the city a sense of pride and recognition.

   Des Moines Marathon on Track to Set Record (KCCI 8)
The Oct 19 Des Moines Iowa Marathon is on record pace to beat it's registration numbers from a record setting 2007 race. Just over 4,000 participants have registered compared with 2,900 at this time last year. Registration will be available in person on October 17-18 at the Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield Sports & Fitness Expo held at the Polk County Convention Complex.

   Training for Freep marathon with Clint Verran (Detroit Free Press)
Lake Orion native Clint Verran of the Hansons-Brooks Distance Project has run 18 marathons since his Detroit debut in 1998. Verran has been training to try to win this year's Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon and break the men's course record of 2 hours 13 minutes and 7 seconds set in 1980 by Greg Meyer. Verran will share his running tips and updating readers on his training until the October 19 race.

   Second annual Hamptons Marathon a success despite soggy conditions (27 EAST)
Oz Pearlman, 26, of New York City bested last year’s marathon record of 2 hours, 44 minutes and 51 seconds by finishing first in 2 hours 37 minutes and 50 seconds at just over 6 minutes a mile. Jessica Allen, 31, of Hampton Bays was the top female finisher and was fifth overall with a time of 3 hours 7 minutes and 10 seconds to give her a course record for the top female finisher. The previous time of 3 hourse 14 minutes and 3 seconds was set in the inaugural year by Lisa Cecchi.

   New Trees, New Street Sign Help Commemorate ING Hartford Marathon (Marketwatch)
Runners in the 2008 ING Hartford MArathon will notice a new orange street sign -- "ING Hartford Marathon Way" -- hanging at the corner of Trinity and Elm Streets near Bushnell Park. Participants can also expect to see several new greener spots along the course thanks to a ten-thousand dollar donation from the ING Foundation to help plant trees along the course in keeping with their "eco-friendly" vision for the marathon.

David Johnston, 38, Wasilla won his first marathon in 32 attempts which included running 10 during the summer months. He ran a personal-best 2 hours, 53 minutes and 53 seconds while runner-up Andrew Haas crossed at 3 hours 27 minutes and 20 seconds

   Strong African presence in Kosice Marathon (IAAF)
The International Peace Marathon, first held in 1924 in Kosice will see its 85th edition on Sunday 5 October. Last year’s race witnessed the first ever sub 2:10 marathon in the history of this event. The 2 hour, 9 minute and 53 second win, registered by Kenyan William Biama, was also the fastest in Slovakia. This years field promises to deliver another fast time with over ten Africans who have run in the 2 hour 11 minute to 2 hour and 15 minute range.

   Torres, Arthur win Lake TahoeMarathon again (Nevada Appeal)
Tony Torres became the first person in Lake Tahoe Marathon history to win the event in three consecutive years. For the first half of the race, Torres was led by 2007 runner-up and Triple winner Lynryd Skynrod who succumbed on the uphill stretches to allow Torres to take the victory in 2:40:41. Skynrod finished in second place. Kristi Arthur, the 2005 champion, won the women's race for the second time in 3:05:30.

Kris Hinrichs, race director for Lakefront Marathon, denied Jason Pisano an early start option of 5 am for the Lakefront Marathon. Pisano, who is physically challenged, stated that he would need the extra time to complete the 26.2 mile race ahead of the 2:30 pm start.

Dick Beardsley will headline the expo speaker line up at the Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon. Beardsley will discuss his addiction to pain pills and hopes to encourage young people to stay clear of addictions. He will also be speaking about his running and life experiences at the expo.
 
   85 Year Old Set to Run 100th Marathon at Lakefront Marathon (WTMJ 620)
Paul Gionfriddo has run a marathon in all fifty states and, at the age of 83, he will run his 100th race at Milwaukee's Lakefront marathon where it all began. Gionfriddo began running marathons when he was 60 and could run a 7 minute mile. He has slowed to 12 minute miles but still puts in 20 to 30 miles per week.

The Mercedes Marathon course will no long run through Mountain Brook or Redwood. This also means that the marathon course will not cross Red Mountain, a very challenging part of the 26.2 mile course the race director Valerie McClean thinks might have prevented the race from growing.

Malkiad Bayo and Flora Charles are currently training in in Arusha in preparation for the October 26 Nairobi Marathon. The athletes are being funded by Standard Chartered Bank. The Nairobi Marathon is the first race of the 2008/09 Greatest Race on Earth Challenge. Three other races complete the challenge and include the Singapore Marathon set for December 7, Mumbai Marathon on January 18, 2009 and Hong Kong Marathon slated for February 8, 2009.

161 runners from Jersey, 33 from Guernsey and 126 from elsewhere are entered into the New Jersey Marathon for the 2008 edition. Race Director Helen Baker stated that the Island Marathon sponsored by Standard Chartered has attracted runners from as far away as Egypt and Australia.
