   Keflezighi's Gold Chase a Marathon (Washington Times)
Many believed that Olympian silver medalist Meb Keflezighi would be a sure bet for the 2008 US Olympic Marathon Team, but some things don't work out as planned. After having a few seasons battling with food poisoning and injuries, Keflezighi had calf pains at miles 15-16 of the 2008 Olympic Trials hurting his performance and costing him his spot on the team. Although not discouraged, Keflezighi looks forward to July 2008 where he will attempt to make the US Olympic team in the 10,000 meters.

   Age-defying De Reuck still strong (Daily Camera)
43-year old mother of two Colleen De Reuck may be better known for her running resume which includes four Olympic Games, bronze medal in the World Cross Country Championships, a few world road bests and scores of road race victories. De Reuck who is in training for the 2008 US Olympic Women's Marathon Team Trials will test her mettle at the 2008 USA Cross Country Championships. De Reuck, the defending U.S. Olympic marathon trials champion, will be forty-four at the starting line for the Trials.

   Amputee chases shot at Olympics (Press of Atlantic City)
In training to qualify for the 2008 US Women's Olympic Trials, Amy Palmiero-Winters, a mother of two who has garnered recognition from Runner's World, ESPN and PowerBar, is an amputee with a prosthesis below her left knee. With the approval of USATF to compete in the Olympics rather than the Paralympics if she qualifies, she will need to knock seventeen minutes off her personal best time and finish under 2:47. She will make her attempt at the 2008 Sarasota Marathon.

   Cheyenne teacher runs marathon in Antarctic (Billings Gazette)
With well over 160 marathons Cheyenne Junior High School teacher,Brent Weigner has not ranked the races on levels of difficulty. But the Antarctic Marathon was not much different from his 15 degree snow packed training runs in Cheyenne.

   Adachi wins debut marathon at Beppu-Oita (Pakistan Daily Times)
Japan’s Tomoya Adachi slipped past Elijah Mutai of Kenya near the 24 mile mark to win his debut at the Beppu-Oita marathon on Sunday. Adachi, 22 had faded to nearly 200 meters behind Mutai before catching him and hitting the tape in two hours 11 minutes 59 seconds. Rachid Kisri of Morocco finished second in 2:13:07, followed by Scott Westcott of Australia third in 2:13:36. Mutai, who led for nearly all of the race failed to finish in the top 10.

   Marathon debutante wins Beppu-Oita Marathon (IAAF)
Twenty-two year old Tomoya Adachi, who was not an invited elite athlete, won the 2008 Beppu-Oita Marathon with a 2:11:59 in his marathon debut. Rachid Kisri from Morocco finished second in 2:13:07 and Olympic team hopeful Scott Wescott from Australia finished third in 2:13:36 missing the Olympic team qualifier by over three minutes. Adachi plans to train harder for his next marathon.

What began as a way of maintaining general fitness has rendered George O’Clair a regular fund raising marathon runner. O'Clair thought he would never run a marathon. But 13 years ago all that changed and now he is training for the famed Boston Marathon. His qualifying time of 3 hours and 8 minutes should put him near the first corral at the start of the twenty thousand plus race.
 
   Developer asked to give Marathon museum a running start (Metro West Daily News)
The Hopkinton Athletic Association has asked the developer of Legacy Farms to donate land to a museum dedicated to the history of marathon races worldwide. The museum will be built in an old farmhouse one hundred yards from the former starting point of the Boston Marathon. The developer who owns the land plans to build 940 residential units along with 450,000 square feet of commercial space.

   Bank of America Chicago Marathon Announces New Name, New Logo and Opening of 2008 Registration (CNN)
The 2008 Chicago Marathon will be celebrating its 30th anniversary. Now titled Bank of America after the banks acquisition of LaSalle Bank, race organizers are looking forward to a field of 45,000 runners. Chicago Marathon Registration opens Friday, February 1, 2008.
 
   Registration opens for newly named Bank of America Chicago Marathon (The Chicago Tribune)
The 2008 Chicago Marathon schedule for Oct 12th will open its registration doors Friday at Midnight. The early registration comes on the heels of a new title sponsor announcement from race organizers. Bank of America will take over for the previously named LaSalle Bank title.

   Sponsor Name Change for Chicago Marathon (Race Results Weekly)
Following the acquisition of the LaSalle Bank, the Chicago Marathon will now be known as the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Bank of America is already a major player in sports sponsorships, which include Major League Baseball, NASCAR, National Football League, the PGA Tour and the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team.

   Cancer survivor inspires other marathon runners for Flying Pig Marathon (The Enquirer)
Ann Davis does not consider herself a hero. Davis was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in February 1999. She recently finished the Nike Women's Marathon and that has inspired seven of her co-workers to tackle her next marathon by her side in Cincinnati. The are racing with the motto "if Ann can, I can". Ann and her motivated friends will race the 26.2 distance in May.

The Dubai Marathon is now history and Haile Gebrselassie almost did the unthinkable. But for Matthew Woods he achieved his own version of immortality. His name appears on the same results sheet as the world record holder. Woods' time of 3:29 placed him close enough in the one thousand runner field to allow him to boast about his time and place.

The 2008 Nedbank Durban City Marathon will be the qualifying event for the 2008 Beijing Olympics for South African long distance Olympic hopefuls. The top three male athletes will have automatic qualification if they finish under 2:12. The top three women will qualify if their times are under 2:36.

   Tram Work Diverts Edinburgh Marathon (Red Orbit)
Organizers for the 2008 Edinburgh Marathon announced that the route would be altered due to construction on the cities tram scheme. Included in the announcement was the declaration that Ian Sharman, of London, set a new Guinness World Record while running the 2007 marathon dressed in a super hero costume. His time was just over 3 hours.

   Cellcom Green Bay Marathon on another record pace (Green Bay Gazette)
Registration for the 2008 Cellcom Green Bay Marathon is up 40% compared to last year. Although to early to predict, race organizers would not be surprised to see a record number of participants. The race has already begun a marathon kick-off offering local training runs as well as a six-week marathon training program.

Kate Lawler of Big Brother 3 fame has stated that if she raises twenty thousand Euro's by April 13 she will run London in her underwear. Her efforts and scanty apparel will provide money for the Cystic Fibrosis charity.

Sammy Wanjiru is betting the Flora London Marathon is the race that will attract the eyes of the Kenyan selection team for the Beijing Olympic games. Wanjiru hopes the competition and the rivalry in London along with his performance and the faster overall times will earn him a spot in Beijing. His race on the 13 of April may be over shadowed only by the Boston Marathon eight days later. On Patriots Day in Boston Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot will try to run down his fourth Boston title and earn his own Olympic Birth.

Biman Mullick who turned 74 will run the London marathon in 2008. The self professed running addict is running on a platform for clean air and to encourage others to embrace fitness. He will have plenty of time on the course to do so as his 2006 time was well over 6 hours.

Nick Yates reluctantly jumped into the London Marathon as part of the London Pride team that will compete against title sponsor Flora's team of chefs. The two teams will compete for pride and honor on April 13th. The challenging race will be amidst a large number of other "less than health friendly" competitions that usually take place after the completion of the 26 mile and 385 yard race.

   Local man blazes path for black marathoners with National Black Marathoners Association. (The Dallas Morning News.)
In 2005 Tony Reed, founder of the National Black Marathoners Association, converged in Missouri with 15 other African-Americans to run the Louis & Clark Marathon. With over 800 members the NBMA will travel to Phoenix on February 17 for the Lost Dutchman Marathon. The Cowtown Marathon will host the 2009 NBMA gathering.

At the age of 63, Dave Schonauer walks 26.2 miles because he has be given a second chance. At first it was just a great cause to walk along Myrtle Beach and raise money for the Cancer Association of Anderson. But when Dave and experienced cancer first hand it brought a whole new meaning to walking for his health. Dave will walk the Myrtle Beach Marathon and be among a team of individuals who will raise over $90,000 for the Cancer Association.

Her three other marathon finishes show tremendous improvement thru the years - 2002 Chicago Marathon in a 3:26, 2003 Boston Marathon in a 3:32 and 2005 New York Marathon in a 3:09.

Beth Moyer Kelly has tested her physical limits in several half marathons. On January 6th she ran the OC Marathon in honor of her parents who passed away last April. VALE runner Emma Gooderham finishe thrid overall in the Gloucester Epney Marathon. Her sub 3 hour race was largely due to her training for the 50K distance. She has plans to qualify for the 100K Celtic Plate in Cardiff in May.
 
   Marathon Star, Grete Waitz, Fighting Cancer (Aftenposten)
Grete Waitz had become a couch potato three years ago when she learned of her cancer diagnosis. Shortly after she received an email from another legendary athlete. Lance Armstrong, 7 time Tour de France winner, told her to stay active. Waitz has now started a new foundation to fight cancer in Oslo. She began to find humor and a more positive outlook once she got off the couch.
