   Possert Breaks Away To Win Andrew Jackson Marathon (The Jackson Sun)
Possert, 44, spent most of the race running with fellow Huntsville native Bryan Robinson before taking command at the 20-mile mark and recording a winning time of 2:58.26. Robinson placed second in 3:01.34.

   Astronaut Running Her Own Boston Marathon (Chron)
Her finishing time will be recorded along with the contestants actually in Massachusetts, but she will not be an official finisher, said officials of the Boston Athetic Association, which sponsors the actual marathon.

Sunita Williams will run 26.2 miles on a treadmill 210 miles above ground while 24,000 other competitors pound the streets of Boston back on Earth. She'll be tied to the treadmill using an elasticated harness to cancel out effect of being weightless in space.

   Defending Champ Cheruiyot Wins Boston Marathon (Associated Press)
Robert Cheruiyot won defending his title in the remnants of a soaking nor'easter in an unofficial time of 2 hours, 14 minutes, 13 seconds. Russia's Lidiya Grigoryeva won the women's race in 2:29:18.

Grigoryeva, who set the course record in Los Angeles last year, veered to the stands to grab a Russian flag just before crossing the finish line to win by 40 seconds, in an unofficial time of 2 hours, 29 minutes, 18 seconds.

Kenyan Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot defended his title winning a rainy and windblown race in 2:14:13. The top American was Peter Gilmore of San Mateo, Calif., who fell one place from last year to 8th in 2:16:41.

The anthem played was the one used only between 1996-2000. Russia reverted to the Soviet-era melody in 2000, but replaced the words with new lyrics written by Sergei Vladimirovich Mikhalkov the same person who wrote the lyrics to the old Soviet anthem.
