   Gun Lake man at eighty sets marathon record (MLive.com)
Back in 2001, Jerry Johncock set a personal goal to run at least one hundred marathons by the age of eighty. Johncock turned eighty earlier this year and posted an age group record time of 4:11:51 at the Traverse City State Bank Bayshore Marathon which was incidentally his 102nd marathon. Johncock plans to run a few more marathons before he retires from the sport.

   Boston’s famed marathon a worthy for me and Lance Armstrong (Fort Collins Now)
Felix Wong ran the Boston Marathon, the oldest annual marathon in the world, with grand plans. After training hard to qualify with a 3:03:24 at the St. George Marathon since men under thirty-five years must run a sub 3:10, Wong took to the start with anticipation. Although Wong was almost thirty minutes off ex-Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong, Wong was happy with his quad busting 3:28:46 time.

   Hooper scores hometown win in Christchurch Marathon (Stuff.co.nz)
Kiwi Rowan Hooper won his second marathon in New Zealand beating Australian Dave Ruschena to win the Christchurch Marathon in 2:21:41. Debuting in the distance, Ruschena took second in a 2:22:08 and Paul Martinico finished third. In the women's race Sandra Prosenica won the women's race in 2:57:37. Sally Anderson was second in a 2:59.

   Old gold and new for Comrades (IOL.CO.nz)
Gold was the subject of discussion at a Comrades Marathon breakfast announcing the race's new title sponsor, the Gold Fields mining company. The rising price of gold was not the issue at hand, but a "missing" 100oz gold statuette for last year's record-breaking winner, Leonid Shvetsov. This is the base for the legal battle between the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) and former race sponsor Harmony Gold.
 
   Marathon mum set to conquer South African race (Northern Territory News)
Shaye Hatty, a thirty-seven year old mother of three has juggled work, training and family life in order to prepare for the grueling 86km Comrades Ultra Marathon in South Africa. Her schedule involves a 100km-a-week running routine that includes tempo runs, speed work and 65km long runs. Hatty has completed twelve marathons, but this will be her first ultra.

   White Rock Marathon, title sponsor end agreement (The Dallas Morning News)
After a five year sponsorship deal, Dallas White Rock Marathon officials have released Georgia-based Wellstone Communities from the remainder of its commitment as the race's title sponsor. Wellstone president and CEO John Lowery said the slow residential real estate market in the Dallas area makes it difficult for his company to justify the cost of sponsorship. Marathon officials said they will seek a new title sponsor.

   Edinburgh Marathon man leads home from the front (The Scotsman)
Paul McNamara, an Irish professional cross country champion, won the 2008 Albert Bartlett Edinburgh Marathon in his first serious attempt at the distance in a 2:25:06. Nathaniel Williams was runner up in a 2:25:33 and Michael Green was third in 2:26:18. Pauline Powell won the women's race two minutes ahead of Karen Hazlitt who took second in 2:47:57. Gill Laithwaite took third in 2:52:24.

   Nepali runner Deepak Rai wins Everest marathon (Nepal News)
Deepak Rai scored three successive victories in the 6th edition of Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon winning the 2008 edition in 3:53:14, starting from the base camp of Mt. Everest at the altitude of 5,364 meters. Rai set the course record in 2006 in a 3:28:27. Phurba Tamang was second and Phuri Sherpa became third in 4:10:29. In the women's race Ang Phuti Sherpa clocked 5:33:10 beating Mingma Chamgi and Mingma Phuti Sherpa who are two Sherpa girls from the same village.

   Nepalese runner wins world's highest marathon for the third time (Earth Times)
Two-time defending champion Dip Kumar Rai, a farmer by profession, had a three-peat at the Everest Marathon winning in 3:53:14. Phurba Tamang was second in 3:58. The race starts near Khumbhu icefall at an altitude of 5,400 meters near the Everest base camp and ended in the town of Namchebazar 2,000 meters below.

   New Long Beach Marathon Course Runs Through CSULB (Gazette News)
International City Racing (ICR) and California State University, Long Beach, made a joint announcement about a major course change to the Long Beach Marathon. The course will be taken out of Naples and off Studebaker Road so that Belmont Shore residents will no longer be trapped by road closures.

   Personal best brings glory for female winner of Med-City Marathon (Post Bulletin.com)
Kara Arzamendia won the women's race of the 2008 Med-City Marathon in a personal best time of 3:12:24. It was a family affair for Arzamendia. Her cousin ran the marathon and two cousins, her husband and father teamed to run the four-person relay. Arzamendia finished eighth overall.

   Mont Blanc Marathon subscriptions already up on last year (Chamonix Chamonet)
Chamonix Mont Blanc Marathon, which takes place the weekend of the 28 and 29 June, has attracted double the number of subscriptions compared with the same time last year. Although this year the race will be held in conjunction with the fifth stage of the Salomon-Endurance National Trail Challenge offering a mix of traditional marathon with a mountain race, the 42.195km marathon has a 2240m of positive height gain and 1190m of descending height change. also, new for this year, race organizers routed the race to take place on more trails than asphalt and limited the number of food and drink posts halved to four with in the hope of making the course more authentic.

   With Hectic Schedule and Two Young Kids, Road Runners CEO Wittenberg Learns to Pace Herself (Wall Street Journal)
Mary Wittenberg, President and Chief Executive of New York Road Runners and Race Director for the New York City Marathon, measures how well she's doing her job by how many road races she runs. An ex-corporate lawyer and mother of two, Wittenberg has a running resume that includes a win of the 1987 Marine Corps Marathon finishing in 2:44 earning a place in the 1988 Olympic marathon trials. Although her professional running career was ended as a result of these knee injuries that kept her from the Trials, she still manages to run several races each year.

   Indefatigable Ndereba bags 10,000m title (Danily Nation)
Catherine Ndereba, completed a rare double with victory in the 10,000m race Saturday at the Prisons national championships at the Nyayo National Stadium. Ndereba beat out Pauline Wangui and former London marathon runner-up, Salina Kosgei to win in 33:10.1. Wangui was second stopping the clock at 33:35.4 and Kosgei third in 33:53.2. Ndereba is heading back to the United States to train for the Beijing Games where she will run the marathon.

   Queen Elizabeth marks 1908 London Olympics and Centenary of “Classic Marathon Distance” (IAAF)
Queen Elizabeth II hosted a reception last night to mark the centenary of the 1908 London Olympic Games when the classic marathon distance of 26.2 miles was used for the first time to allow the Royal family to watch the start of the race from the window of the nursery in Windsor Castle. The 1908 Olympics were due to be held in Rome, but London stepped in when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 1906. The 1908 Olympic Marathon was famous for incident surrounding Italian Dorando Pietri who had led the race but collapsed after entering the stadium in first place; but was later disqualified and first place awarded to American Johnny Hayes.

   Kogo and Mikitenko take 10k victories on London’s proposed 2012 marathon course (IAAF)
Micah Kogo and 2008 London Marathon winner Irina Mikitenko won the inaugural 'BUPA London 10000' which utilized the last ten kilometers of the proposed 2012 London Olympics. Kogo beat Zersenay Tadese, the reigning double World Road Running champion and 2008 London Marathon men's race winner Martin Lel, winning the UK All-Comers Record for the distance in 28:08. In the women's race Mikitenko bested the lead pack consisting of Aniko Kalovics, Hungarian record holder over 5km, 10km and marathon, and Great Britain Olympic hopeful Mara Yamauchi to win the race in 32:02.

   China promises life bans for drugs cheats (Times Online UK)
China has followed the United Kingdom's lead in imposing automatic life bans on athletes who use performance enhancing drugs and has gone farther banning dopers from taking part in all competitions, not just the Olympic Games. This was perhaps a reaction to previous allegations about doping in the past as well as recent news about poor coaching and dwindling optimism surrounding the 2008 Beijing Games.
 
   Triathlons/Marathons on the Rise, Due to Intensive Group-Oriented Training Programs (Mercury News)
Despite the small number of competitors, interest in endurance sports is rapidly growing especially with a number of local clubs and organizations helping train and motivate competitors. One of the largest organizations that train athletes for endurance events is the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team in Training program, which is celebrating its twentieth anniversary this year. In exchange for offering between three to four months of training with expert coaches for a marathon, triathlon or bicycle century ride, participants raise money to fund blood cancer research and patient services.

   Mutisya wins Mombasa race (The Daily Nation)
Peter Mutisya in his first victory won the Mombasa Marathon in 2:12:46. Motira Dismas finished second in a 2:13:35 and Patrick Wachira was third in 2:14.13. In the women's race Phyllis Chelagat won in 2:49:16, Sylvia Chemeli finished second in 2:49:18 and Susan Chemtai was third in 2:54:33.

   U.S. Olympic marathon runner is hoping to inspire younger athletes (Ann Arbor News)
Brian Sell who will represent the United States as part of the three-man marathon team at the Beijing Olympics along with Hansons-Brooks Distance Project teammate Clint Verran will appear at the expo that kicks off the weekend's annual Dexter-Ann Arbor Run. Sell, who finished second to controversial Ethiopian Alene Reta in last year's half-marathon, will not participate this year because it conflicts with his Olympic training schedule.

   Beijing Olympic marathon dream comes to an end for Canadian Warwick (The Star Phoenix)
Canadian Jason Warwick had one last shot at an Olympic berth at the ING Ottawa Marathon, having missed qualification at the Rotterdam Marathon in April. But due to difficult Olympic marathon standards set by Athletics Canada (a full four minutes faster than the international guidelines), Warwick and his fellow Canadian competitors had to step up his performance early on. No Canadian runner qualified for the Olympic marathon team at the Ottawa Marathon.

   Swiss star Viktor Roethlin selected to run Olympic marathon (International Herald Tribune)
Viktor Roethlin won a World Championships bronze in Osaka, Japan, last August and a silver at the 2006 Europeans in Goteborg, Sweden. The 33 year old will be going to his third games at the Beijing Olympics which will run from August 8-24. Roethlin ran 2 hours, 7 minutes, 23 seconds to win the Tokyo Marathon in February for his best time this year.

   U.S. runner slams Canadian Olympic criteria (London Free Press)
Following the Ottawa Marathon, American Jon Little criticized Athletics Canada for sending faster runners who were more recently naturalized as citizens rather than sending qualified individuals to represent the country at the Beijing Olympics. Canadian men marathoners needed to run a time of 2:11:31 in either 2006 or 2007 (the "A+ standard") or 2:11:38 (the "A standard") since Feb. 28, 2007 to qualify for Beijing. There is also a B standard of 2:14 mentioned in the general qualifying criteria, but it does not apply in the specific rules for qualifying for Beijing. Women needed to run an A+ standard of 2:27:35 or an A standard of 2:29:08.

Athens spent more than £9 billion on staging the Olympics, slightly less than the current estimate for the 2012 London Games, and leaving Greece with a national budget deficit of 6.1 percent. Of the twenty-two venues built in Athens, twenty-one are in a state of disrepair and closed to the public due to lack of interest and vandalism.

At thirty-four years of age, Paula Radcliffe has been running for twenty three years and collected a number of accolades on the track, in cross country and on the roads in several high profile races such as the 2000 Sydney Olympics with international fields. Yet etched into the memories of many are scenes from the women's race at the 2004 Olympic marathon in Athens where Radcliffe dropped out during the race failing the crowds and herself. Radcliffe plans to run the Beijing Games and has kept her options open to run the London 2012 Olympic Games as well.

   Legends back rejected mother's Olympic bid (New Zealand Herald)
Liza Hunter-Galvan is determined to run at the Beijing Olympics to create new memories for her brain-injured daughter although New Zealand Athletics has ruled her out for Olympic berth. Hunter-Galvin, a mother-of-four who ran in the 2004 Athens Olympics, has fought back from her own injuries suffered when a truck ploughed into the family's car in the United States last year causing extensive brain damage to her daughter. Olympic triple gold medallist Peter Snell, and bronze medallists and marathon champions Lorraine Moller and Rod Dixon are supporting Hunter-Galvan as the tribunal makes a secondary consideration.

   Star runner Sun disappointed by poor showing at Bird's Nest (China Daily)
Sun Yingjie, former Chinese long distance running star returned from Olympic ban, failed to qualify for he 2008 Beijing Games in the 5,000 meters as she ran the Bird's Nest Race in China. In 2003, Sun became the first Chinese woman and fourth woman in the world to break the 2:20 minute time in a marathon, finishing the Beijing Marathon in 2:19:39. The veteran runner was crushed when she learned she could not run in the Olympics and when she heard she was out of the China Open as well.

   Johnson will have her work cut out at Freihofer's 5Km (IAAF)
Two-time defending champion of the Freihofer's Run for Women Benita Johnson will go up against a strong African women's field. Many of her top competitors dominated the Bolder Boulder field which includes champion Millicent Gathoni and runner-up Amane Gobena. Event Director George Regan expects a fast race.
