   Kibet Sets Eyes On World Marathon Mark (The Standard)
World Marathon men’s champion, Luke Kibet,has his eyes on setting a new world record at the 2008 Berlin Marathon in September. Whether he will run at the Beijing Olympics remains undecided as Athletics Kenya has yet to announce the 10,000 meter team and he is on the Olympics men’s marathon reserve list alongside Rotterdam Marathon champion, William Kiplagat. In 2007 Ethiopian Haile Gebrselassie ran 2:04.26 to break Kenyan Paul Tergat’s previous record of 2:04.55 set at the same Berlin course in 2003.

   Bucyrus Woman Tina Reffey Runs Marathon While Fighting Cancer (Mansfield News Journal)
At fifty-two Tina Reffey, a veteran of twelve marathons, used marathons as dedications to others – an employer, her father-in-law. In 2008 Reffey ran the Boston Marathon for herself having been diagnosed with cancer and having less than a year to recover following surgeries and other cancer treatments. Reffey, who qualified with a time of 3:55 in Chicago finished Boston in 4:27.

   Ben Tarbutton Wins Marathon On First Try (Gaylord Herald Times)
Ben Tarbutton had not told anyone except for his girlfriend that he planned to run the Charlevoix Marathon, his debut in the distance. Tarbutton stunned all since he won the event in just under 2:50 without training for it. The Lake Superior State University track and field team runner majoring in mathematics for secondary education had signed up for the marathon on race day.

   Strides for life Marathon trainees reap more than health benefits (Clarion Ledger)
Marathon Makeover, now in its fifth year, began in 2004 when a friend of local family counselor Mark Simpson took over twenty couch potatoes and turned them into marathon runners participating in the Chicago Marathon. This year 450 participants have their sights set on the Chicago Marathon. Many participate to promote weight loss, to better health conditions and to enjoy the outdoors.

   Four-time Marathon Winner Pat Carroll Brings Big Squad (Gold Coast.com.au)
Pat Carroll, four-time winner of the Gold Coast Marathon, will be bringing one hundred eighty weekend warriors he has trained including Premier Anna Bligh to participate in the various race events. Carroll who will run the half-marathon himself, won in 1983, '84, '88 and '97 races, the 1995 Beppu Marathon and still holds an Australian all-comers record for a half marathon of 61:11. Premier Bligh is hoping to break two hours in the half marathon.

   Registration For 2009 Little Rock Marathon Now Open (TodaysTHV.com)
Discounted registration prices are now available for the Little Rock Marathon which is expecting a sell-out once again. Gina Marchese Pharis, co-executive director of the event, has announced this years theme "Marathoners Gone Wild". The 2008 event (held earlier this year in March) saw a 35% increase in participation with almost 12,000 participants in the various events.

   Saharan target for marathon man (Bucks Free Press)
Neil Thubron is preparing for the Marathon des Sables, a six-day race across the Sahara desert over a one hundred fifty-two mile course while carrying a 10kg pack of food and sleeping equipment. Although Thubron's current weekly mileage is at sixty miles; he will eventually be running 100 weekly miles, as well as taking part in an 85-mile race from Hertfordshire to Wiltshire.

   4,000 runners expected in Milo Marathon (Visayan Daily Star)
Local organizers of the 2008 Milo Marathon Bacolod leg are expecting around four thousand runners from Negros Occidental and other neighboring provinces. Along with the marathon there will be 3K, 5K and 21K races. Top three male and female finishers in the centerpiece 21K event will qualify for the 42K national finals slated later this year in Manila.

   Marathon du Mont Blanc Running Weekend (Chamonix Chamonet)
Over fourteen hundred runners ran the 2008 Mont Blanc Marathon in hot conditions and a course that notably starts in altitude and climbs 1015 meters after the start. Swiss athlete Jean-Yves Rey won the marathon in 3:52. The first woman over the line was French runner Christiane Lacombe in 5:16.

The Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon 2009 in its sixth year has raised its prize money bonus by $10,000. The theme of the race will be "run for a cause" in order to raise money for charity. Registration opens July 10.

   Shawn Kemp To Take Up Marathon Running (Seattle Times)
Ex-Seattle NBA star Shawn Kemp who is 6'10 and once stood at three hundred pounds who battled weight problems at the end of his career has shed fifty pounds and has a new goal to get fit. Kemp plans to run marathons. "My goal is to run the New York City Marathon in about two years."

   Amy Hastings Believes Marathon May Be In Her Future (Kansas City Star)
Amy Hastings who finished fourteenth at the 2008 Olympic Trials 10,000 meters in Eugene, Oregon believes her natural strength lies in longer distances. Currently, Hastings prepares for the the next 5,000 meters round at the Trials. Hastings currently trains in Flagstaff's high altitude training camp.

   Wardian makes run at treadmill records (The Washington Times)
Two-time Olympic marathon trials competitor Michael Wardian will attempt to snatch back his world record "fastest treadmill marathon" as well as break the "fastest 50K on a treadmill." The thirty-four-year-old ultramarathoner from Arlington has won the USA 50K and 100K National Championships this year, in addition to at least a dozen marathons and shorter races in and out of the D.C. area. The times to beat are: marathon 2:21:40, set June 24, 2006 by fellow American Eric Blake and 50K 3:10:19 set Dec. 10, 2005, by a Norwegian.

   Solo marathon marks unique way of celebrating 40th birthday (Ithaca Journal)
Wylie Breckenridge celebrated his fortieth birthday by taking to the Ithaca High School track early Tuesday morning and running 106 laps in 3:50 to complete his twentieth marathon. Friends ran one hundred forty laps with Breckenridge, who previously agree to donate one dollar to a to-be-determined charity for each lap completed. The charity of choice will be selected by the friend who ran the most laps.

   Lee Troop pours the heat on (Herald Sun)
To prepare for the brutal heat of the 2008 Beijing Games, Australian Olympic team member Lee Troop has been has based himself at the University of Ballarat which has a heat chamber training facility capable of simulating 30C-plus temperatures and 80 per cent humidity. There is no way to prepare for the pollution, but Troop's coach, four-time Olympian Steve Moneghetti, says too much has been made of China's pollution levels.
 
   Beijing or bust for Ramaala (The Times)
At thirty-six Olympic veteran Hendrick Ramaala boasts a resume including a victory at the New York City Marathon, seven-out-of-seven top-10 finishes in London and twice runner-up at the world half- marathon championships; but no medal at the Olympic Games. As part of his Olympic build-up Ramaala intends to train in Albuquerque and compete in two half-marathons next month, the South African championships and the New York Half Marathon. SA’s Olympic marathon team will be named on July 10, but it is likely that it will include only Ramaala and debutant Norman Dlomo.

   Olympic Dream Still Alive For Radcliffe (Bedford Today)
Paula Radcliffe still has a chance of making this summer's Beijing Olympics despite nursing a stress fracture to her left thigh, although UK Athletics Performance Director Dave Collins has their doubts. It has been a month since she was diagnosed with the injury, but Radcliffe is striving to make her fourth successive Olympics by training at Font Romeu in the French Pyrenees. Collins will wait until July 20 before making a decision on Radcliffe as that is when he declares the final team to the British Olympic Association.

   Hunter-Galvan Set Up to Fail Says Gold Medalist John Walker (Stuff.co.nz)
After Liza Hunter-Galvan’s fight with Athletics New Zealand for a right to a spot on the New Zealand Olympic women’s marathon team for the 2008 Beijing Games, Former Olympic 1500m gold medallist John Walker believes that Hunter-Galvan has been set up to fail. Hunter-Galvan’s daughter sustained brain injuries in a car accident the family was involved in last year and coupled with the mental toll battling the athletics federation, Walker hopes she has the strength to pull off a good performance. Hunter-Galvan has officially received notice of her Olympic berth.
 
   Running Mum Liza Hunter-Galvan Wins Her Marathon Fight (New Zealand Herald)
Liza Hunter-Galvan, the runner determined to make the Olympics for her brain-injured daughter, won her case yesterday and has made the New Zealand Olympic Women's Marathon team for the 2008 Beijing Games. Hunter-Galvan, who ran a qualifying time last year, had been denied the initial Olympic berth due to poor performances at previous championships. Her motivation for the Olympics was to create new memories for 13-year-old Amber, who is still battling head injuries inflicted when a truck smashed into the family's car last year.

   Hunter-Galvan will run at Olympic Games (Stuff.co.nz)
Marathon runner Liza Hunter-Galvan's fight for a place in the New Zealand Olympic team paid off today when New Zealand Athletics reversed their earlier decision to allow her to compete at the 2008 Beijing Games. The United States-based runner was not included in the initial nominations for the Games due to poor performances at the Athens Olympics and the grounds she would not be capable of a top-16 finish. Hunter=Galvan had run an A qualifying time and finished fifth in 2:30:40 at the 2007 the Amsterdam Marathon.

   Mt Elgon runner bags Lewa race crown (Nationmedia.com)
Benson Kaptikou won the Safaricom Lewa Conservancy Marathon in 2:21:39 outkicking leader Joseph Ouko at the 35K mark for his first marathon victory. Emah Muthoni defied the heat and wind to win the race in 2:45:10. Hellen Chemonges finished second, close to twenty minutes after Muthoni in 3:02:16.

   Seafair Marathon Won't Reimburse Runners Who Missed The Bus (The Seattle Times)
Organizers of the Seafair Marathon said that they won't reimburse entry fees for runners who didn't make it onto a shuttle bus to the start of the marathon. They said they will donate half of those fees to charity and have promised to cover the entry fees for runners who missed the shuttle and want to race in either next month's Torchlight Run or next year's Seafair Marathon. Nearly four hundred did not make it to the start. Runners paid between $65 and $100 to participate.

   Kenyans finish first, second in Seafair Marathon (Seattle Times)
Kenyan Edward Kiptum edged out his fellow countryman and training partner Bethuel Cheruiyot by thirty-three seconds to win his second career marathon at the Seafair Marathon in 2:20:28. In the women's race Wendy Terris finished in 2:50:55 followed by runner-up, Claudia Colita, trailing a minute behind.

   Hundreds of Seattle Marathon runners miss bus to starting line (Seattlepi.com)
Almost four hundred runners missed shuttle buses to the starting line and didn't start the race. Upon realizing there was a problem, race organizers delayed the start by only fifteen minutes due to the course route over a major bridge. Possible causes for the incident could be that family and friends were allowed to board the early buses and that more people than expected arrived for later buses and the final 6:45 a.m. shuttle. Although some of the stranded the option of running a 13.1-mile half marathon and transported some of them to that start, it's not clear what will be done for the runners who missed the last bus.
