   Veikko Karvonen, 81; Winning Finnish Marathon Runner (Los Angeles Times)
Veikko Karvonen, a Finnish distance runner who ranked as one of the greatest marathoners in track and field history and won a bronze medal at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, died.

Paula Radcliffe has not made it back in time for the World Championships, but has announced plans to race in the next three months for the first time since December 2005. A stress fracture at the base of the 33-year-old’s spine, linked to the birth of her daughter, Isla, in January, has prevented her from training.

Mike Long, who convinced Ethiopian legend Haile Gebrselassie to come to Phoenix to set a world half-marathon record in 2006, died of a heart attack on July 18.

Disability charity Scope is looking for Liverpool runners to take part in the New York Marathon. To be part of the Scope team, runners need to raise £1,500 in sponsorship. Participants are free to make their own travel and accommodation arrangements, and Scope will provide travel information.

Brazilian runner Franck Caldeira took the lead in the final 1 1/2 miles and went on to win the marathon on the last day of the Pan American Games in two hours, 14 minutes, three seconds.

De Almeida crossed the finish line at the “Parque do Flamengo” in 2:14:03, a personal best.
