The Inaugural Arizona Marathon will kick off in February with more than 200 runners pre-registered for the marathon. The events will include a half-marathon and several local celebrities have signed up for the first year event.

   Katie Holmes not gearing up for Boston Marathon (Thaindian News)
Despite earlier rumors, Katie Holmes is not running the Boston Marathon. A source had revealed that the star was so embarrassed about her time that she had made up her mind to run another marathon.

Celebrity Katie Holmes is rumoured to be running the Boston Marathon following her New York City marathon debut in the fall of 2007. Holmes finished 34,193rd among 39,085 entrants with her time of 5 hours and 30 minutes. BAA spokesman Marc Chalufour told the Track he isn’t aware of the celebrity entrant.

   Rumors R Us: Katie Holmes Running the Boston Marathon? (Bostonist)
US Magazine has announced that Katie Holmes has been special exemption to the Boston Marathon to be held on April 21. If the rumor holds up, she will join presidential candidate Mike Huckabee as another celebrity runner given exemption to enter a race that once had strict qualifying standards.

   MELINDA Shutt won the biggest prize of her short running career yesterday with success in the Cadbury Marathon at Claremont. (The Voice of Tasmania)
Melinda Shutt, who began running one year ago to lose weight, won the Cadbury Marathon on Sunday. Her time of 3:11 was nearly 20 minutes better than her previous personal best. Melinda began running distance to simply lose some weight.

   School adminstrator to run in Disney World marathon for benefit of children with leukemia and lymphoma (Sun Journal)
Stephanie Cyrus, assistant principal at Quinn Elementary, has raised $3,800 since she started training for the Disney World Marathon. The money will benefit children with Lymphoma and leukemia in North Carolina. Students of Quinn elementary saved pennies and dollars in the amount of $275 to help Quinn with her fund raising.

   Jackson woman tries 100th marathon at Disney World (Everything Michigan)
Debbie Lazaroff will mark the year by running her 100th marathon at Walt Disney World this coming weekend. She has run in Paris, Caymen Islands and 37 states. She has run up to 11 marathons in a single year and will attempt to complete all 50 states by the fall of 2009.

With the Dubai Marathon around the corner, Haile Gebrselassie and Lornah Kiplagat will be going into race day with different challenges. Gebrselassie aiming to do a sub 2:04 marathon is worried that his rabbit Rodgers Rop who paced him to a World Record may not make it to Dubai given the difficulties leaving violence torn Nairobi. Kipligat had to scale back her training due to ongoing violence.

Sammy Korir, third fastest marathoner in the world, will be competing against world record holder Haile Gebrselassie at the Dubai Marathon. Lornah Kiplagat will run in the women’s event.

   Edinburgh Marathon has found a new title sponsor (BBC News)
Scottish root grower and packer company Albert Bartlett has pledged a five-figure sum to back the Edinburgh Marathon. Over 7,000 runners have already signed up for the May 25th race which closes on January 15th. The money comes on the heels of traffic management fears from years past and should help to provide improved organization to the growing event.
 
   Edinburgh Marathon already a runaway success (The Scotsman)
More than 7100 people have registered for the Edinburgh Marathon and thousands more are expected to register for the relay teams. Organizers are hoping for more than 9000 people. Last year, organisers paid their own traffic management costs. Albert Bartlett, a local vegetable firm, is the title sponsor

   Kickoff marks start of Cellcom Marathon preparations (Green Bay Press Gazette)
Preparation and training begins now for the Green Bay Marathon scheduled for May as many attended a kickoff for the Green Bay Marathon to jump-start that process by registering early, finding training partners and gleaning tips for a faster or further run. The only changes to the marathon course are eliminating De Pere Bridge and the addition of running through the campus of St. Norbert College in De Pere.

   Cheruiyot wins Houston Marathon in sprint finish (Chron)
Kenya's David Cheruiyot does a hat-trick and wins the 2008 Houston Marathon in 2:12:31. Returning women's champion Ethiopia's Dire Tune set a record finish in an 2:24:39.
 
   Records Abound at the 36th Running of the Chevron Houston Marathon, Aramco Houston Half Marathon (RunningUSA Wire)
The Chevron Houston Marathon held its 36th running with over 14,000 participants in its race weekend. In the women's race defending champion Dire Tune smashed her previous course record in a 2:24:40. Daivd Cheruiyot took his thrid win in four years with a 2:12:32. Held conjunctly with race festivities is the USA Half Marathon Championships at which James Carney debuting in the half marathon won in a 1:02:21, twelve seconds ahead of Team USA Minnesota's Jason Lehmkuhle. Kate O'Neill broke the tape in 1:11:58.

   Steve Gokey, a blind runner, is among 17,000 in field of Houston Marathon (USA Today)
Steve Gokey is the only blind runners among the 17,000 runners participating in the Houston Marathon race weekend. Gokey has run about two dozen marathons including the Boston Marathon and California International Marathon. A team of four guides lead him around the course, each taking a segment of the race. He's linked to his guide by two 5-foot-long PVC pipes

At the age of 46 Ray Boytim was twenty pounds over weight and in a high stress job when he ran his first Houston Marathon 30 years ago. His doctor told him he was headed in the wrong direction at his company physical. He made a few changes and 30 years later he has kept up with those changes.

Chevron Houston Marathon and the Aramco Houston Half Marathon is expecting a record 17,000 participants which is two thousand more than the previous year. Dire Tune who won the women's marathon in 2:26:52 will be returning. Ryan Hall won't be returning for the half marathon as he prepares for the 2008 Beijing Olympics and tends to some wear-and-tear injuries.

Randy Rendon will compete in his twenty-third straight Houston Marathon. When he was thirty-two he took up long distance running and lost thirty pounds and has undergone a total knee replacement. It won't stop him from running yet another Houston Marathon.

On January 17 well over ninety runners will attempt to run ninety-four laps around the indoor track of the Petit Ice Center in Wisconsin. The ice rink will host the Icebreaker Marathon with it's fifty degree controlled temperature and lack of wind.

   Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon hosts kids run kick off at Knoxville Zoo (Seymour Herald)
The Knoxville Marathon will kick off a kids run on Saturday January 17 to encourage children to run 26.2 miles in three months. The event will culminate with a mile run at the official Knoxville Marathon to be held on March 28.

   London Marathon calling for Ryan Hall (London Telegraph)
The U.S. Men's Olympic Trials Champion, Ryan Hall has added his name to the list of elites to compete in the Flora London Marathon. Halls 2:08:24 placed him 7th in his marathon debut last year in London. Sammy Wanjiru of Kenya will also compete in the already stacked field.

   Hall and Wanjiru Added to London Marathon Field (Race Results Weekly)
The 2008 Flora London Marathon will have some star marathoners in its field with the addition of Ryan Hall and Sammy Wanjiru to the field. Hall won the 2008 US Olympic Men's Marathon Trials in New York City and three time world record holder in the half marathon, debuted in the marathon distance at Fukuoka in an astounding 2:06:39.

   Over 1,400 runners participated in the Mississippi Blues Marathon and Half (Clarion Ledger)
The inaugural Mississippi Blues Marathon, Half-Marathon and Kids Run had a great turn out. Atene Reta of New York won the men’s race in 2:25:01. Janet Cherobon, of Lawrenceville, Ga., won the women’s race in a 2:48.37.
 
   Making a run at a better life (Clarion Ledger)
Janet Cherobon won the inaugural Mississippi Blues Marathon women's race in a 2:48:37. This was Cherobon's third win in a row. She began running in order to get a scholarship to go to school
 
   Former Madison County runner makes most of local knowledge (The Clarion Ledger)
Matthew Manning completed his first marathon and won the inaugural Mississippi Blues Marathon in a time of 2:45.53. Manning says he would like to have practiced on the course a few more times to help prepare him for the cramps that he experienced.
