 Bermuda Marathon

   Switzer running in the Bermuda Triangle challenge (Bermuda Sun)
Katherine Switzer, 60, best known for running as a bandit in the Boston Marathon and campaigning to have a women's marathon included in the Olympics, is running the three races in the Bermuda Triangle challenge to promote running to women. She is aiming simply to run a sub 2:15 half-marathon in this final leg of the challenge.

   This Dallas White Rock marathon relay team was built to win (Dallas Morning News)
Doug Hinds, BNSF's team captain and assistant general tax counsel, recruited his marathon relay team with an ambition to win. There were two teams that entered last years race and neither came out with a victory. This year the all varsity team of five completed the 26.2-mile course in 2 hours, 43 minutes, 15 seconds, or 6 minutes, 14 seconds per mile to claim the relay title which will be awarded at SMU.

   Martin Fagan Qualifies For Beijing Marathon at Dubai (Athletic Association of Ireland)
Martin Fagan pushed the pain barrier and ran the Dubai Marathon in 2 hours 14 minutes 06 seconds. This time put him comfortably inside the Olympic A qualifying standard of 2.15 and earned him a trip to Beijing.
 
   Second fastest of all time for Gebrselassie in Dubai Marathon (IAAF)
Winning the 2008 Dubai Marathon, Haile Gebrselassie ran the second fastest marathon in history, 2:04:53, but fell short of the prize bonus of $1,000,000 US Dollars for breaking the standing world record. Geb and his pacemakers went out at an alarmingly fast pace hitting the 10km mark in 28:39 and at half marathon mark in 61:27. In the women's race seven women were still together at halfway in 70 minutes, Berhane Adere ran away in the last few kilometres, to win in 2:22:40.
 
   Gebrselassie Oh So Close in Dubai (Race Results Weekly)
Haile Gebrselassie started the 2008 Dubai Marathon at a break neck finishing the first half in 1:01:27. Wanting to do a faster last half, Gebrselassie did not have enough to hold on. He finished in a 2:04:53.

   Mumbai Marathon fever lands one enthusiast in hospital (Express India)
Forty-five-year old Roger Desouza ran out of time to train for the marathon in Mumbai. His last ditch effort to prepare for the 26.2 mile race backfired. Desouza found himself in surgery for compartment syndrome. His legs had to be operated upon after he was told to take pain medicine and began flooding his body with water.

When rumors of Katie Holmes planned to run the 2008 Boston Marathon surfaced, fan and non-fan gossip began to circulate. Although her representation deny the fact that she plans to run, the newest news is that Holmes did not run the New York City Marathon. Of course in the end it's gossip amongst conspiracy theorists, but humorous nonetheless.

Cycling great Lance Armstrong prepares for his third marathon, the 2008 Boston Marathon. The standard to qualify for the Boston Marathon for men 35 to 39 is 3:15:00. Armstrong finished the 2007 New York City Marathon in 2:46:43.

   Gebrselassie Hoping for Perfect Race in Dubai (Race Results Weekly)
Haile Gebrselassie is going into the 2008 Dubai Marathon with many elements conducive to a new world record which include three to four injury-free months, near-perfect conditions: a flat course, excellent pacemaking, ideal weather and a well-marked and measured course.

Coming off a 2:09:02 at the 2008 US Olympic Team Trials, Ryan Hall has set his race calendar for 2008 with the London Marathon being his first and possibly only big scale race prior to the Beijing Olympics. Having finished seventh in his debut marathon in a 2:08:24, Hall will once again join a top elite field including Martin Lel, Abderrahim Goumri, Felix Limo, Jaouad Gharib and Stefano Baldini. As per his coach Terrence Mahon of Team USA California Hall is young, takes care of his body, is a very efficient runner with amazing recovery abilities perfect for marathoning.

The members of the Greatest Race on Earth Team will run Mumbai this weekend. John Maluni (2:11.35) together with female pair, Irene Mogaka (2:36.15) and Jemimah Jelegat plan on takine top honors. Jelegat was thrilled to be traveling to Mumbai as she is able to leave the civil unrest in her home training venue near the Rift Valley.

   Fearing distractions and spying, China has Olympic athletes keep a low profile (USA Today)
Fearful that opponents may be spying, China's field of about 800 athletes for the upcoming Olympics will move to the heavily guarded, Beijing-based National Sports Training Center. Also, in preparation for the games, with the forecast predicting a fifty percent chance of rain, the government plan to turn off the rain with cloud seeding technology in which more than eighty rocket launchers have been arranged from nine miles to seventy five miles outside Beijing to seed threatening clouds and release their rain before it reaches the Chinese capital on the days of the opening and closing ceremonies.

   Ulmer's First Big Run Will Be the Motatapu Icebreaker Marathon (Sport Scene)
Recently retired World and Olympic Cycling star Sarah Ulmer will run the Motatapu Icebreaker Marathon on March 8th. Tracey Neil, race director, stated that the off road course will allow Ulmer and other runners to enjoy the scenery.

Olympic Sprinter Oscar Pistorius had been banned from Olympic competition in the 400 meters as the IOC determined his carbon fiber prosthetic legs gave him a clear advantage. Amputee marathoner Amy Palmiero-Winters will be allowed to compete with her prosthetic should she make the qualifying time when she runs the Sarasota Marathon on March 2nd.

   Rock N Roll Marathon runners shed clothes for charity (East Valley Tribune)
Goodwill of Central Arizona, in a partnership with Elite Racing, which organizes P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon, collected nearly 2000 pounds of clothing this weekend. Under the agreement, Goodwill is able collect the clothing discarded along the marathon route and then resell the items. Runners were more than generous this year.

The 2008 Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon which is offering the largest prize purse ever, plus a $1 million bonus for a new world record will be broadcast to over one hundred million homes. The Friday race will feature world record holder Haile Gebrselassie's attempt to break his current standing world record of 2:04:26 from the 2007 Berlin Marathon. The field also includes Sammy Korir, Lorna Kiplagat, Berhane Adere and last year’s winners Willy Rotich and Askale Tafa Magarsa

   Houston Marathon event earns 'rave reviews' (Houston Chronicle)
17,000 runners participated in one the smoothest Houston Marathons to date. Steven Karpas stated that the future of the marathon looks very bright. And considering the have been flooded with positive responses, locked up the US 1/2 marathon championships for the next three years and sponsors to boot, it should continue to run very well. Registration has opened for 2009 and will shut down at the end of January and not re-open until later in the year.
 
 Little Rock Marathon

   Little Rock Marathon's new course begins and ends in River Market area (Arkansas Democrat-Gazette)
The start and finish of the Little Rock marathon will be on the River Market Area for the March 2 race. Bill Torey, race director, stated that the new finish will allow for the ever growing field to expand again and allow ample room for post race festivities.
 
 London Marathon

   It's Official - Radcliffe to Return to London (Race Results Weekly)
Fresh off a victory at the 2007 New York City Marathon, World Record Holder Paula Radcliffe will take on the 2008 London Marathon as preparation for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Radcliffe thinks that the marathon will be good preparation for the Olympics at which she is looking to redeem herself. Radcliffe dropped out of the 2004 Athens Marathon.

Even though Paula Radcliffe won the New York Marathon, in which she outsprinted Ethiopia's Gete Wami to the line in 2hr 23min 9sec, back in November she will still run in the Flora London Marathon on April 13th. The 34 year young woman hopes for Gold in Beijing and many think this might only hinder her chances of the only benchmark she lacks on her running career.
 
   Radcliffe chases fourth London win (CNN International)
World record holder Paula Radcliffe will attempt a fourth win of the London Marathon in April 2008 before heading to Beijing for the Olympic Games. Other participants on the women's roster are Gete Wami, Berhane Adere, Constantina Tomescu-Dita, Svetlana Zakharova, Benita Johnson, Salina Kosgei and Irena Mikitenko.

Katie Holmes was inspired to run the New York City Marathon after seeing her father and brother complete the Boston Marathon when she was a teenager, but when it came to the 2007 New York City Marathon, she almost quit e spotted husband Tom Cruise and daughter Suri waitingat the 18 mile mark.

   Bastos, Peters take Disney marathon honors (Sun Sentinel)
In his fifth win in six years, Brazilian Adriano Bastos won the 2008 Disney Marathon in a 2:20:56. The runner-up John Garton came in a 2:35:02. Former University of Miami track star Melanie Schultz Peters of St. Petersburg won her first marathon title in a 2:47:29. Sonia Friend-Uhl who was running in memory of her brother finished second in a 2:49:24 despite winning the Marathon of the Palm Beaches one month ago.
 
 Everest Marathon

   Scottish woman wins Everest Marathon, breaks world record (Economic Times)
Angela Mudge, 37, a doctorate in physical chemistry from Scotland, wins the Everest Marathon in 5:02.00. Mudge beat the existing women's record by thirteen minutes. The prior female course record was 5:16.03. The present men's record is 3:50.23. The Guiness Book of World Records recognizes this race as the highest marathon in the world with a start close to the Everest base camp in Nepal at 3,446 meters.

Grandma's marathon has been fast on racing times but a little slow on the uptake of racing technology. Chip timing was finally added in 2001 marking Grandma's as one of the last major US races to add electronic timing. Scott Keenan, executive director of Grandma's Marathon, stated that he was cautious but in the end he admitted that allowing Marathonguide.com of New York to do the registration will save Keenan and his marathon about three hundred man hours and $30,000 dollars by utilizing the online capabilities.
 
 Houston Marathon

   Carney and O'Neill Win First USA Titles at Houston (Race Results Weekly)
James Carney and Kate O'Neill won their their first USA titles at 2008 US Half Marathon Championships held in conjunct with the Aramco Houston Half-Marathon. The race which brought Ryan Hall into the foreground last year was dominated by Carney debuting in the distance. Carney won in a 1:02:21. Track star Kate O'Neill had competition in US Olympic Marathon Team hopefuls Blake Russell and Elva Dryer; but O'Neill pulled through to win in a 1:11:57.

   Kenyan unopposed in Clark Marathon (The Phillipine Star)
In his debut marathon Kenya’s Hillary Lagat won in a 2:26.29. Native Filipino Cresenciano Sabal came in second in a 2:26.48 having lost steam in the final 3k. Southeastern Asian Games bronze medalist Jho-An Banayag was the easy winner in the women's race, posting a time of 3:02.51

   Masks to help Team GB breathe easy in Beijing (Telegraph UK)
In preparation for pollution at the 2008 Beijing Olympics British athletes will be issued with specially designed face masks. The high-tech anti-pollution masks to avoid respiratory problems during final preparations for the Games in August. Paula Radcliffe has already tested a protoype while training in South Africa.
