The half-marathon has already sold out for the twenty-seventh running of the Bayshore Marathon and Half-marathon. With only 18 weeks to go for the May 23rd race, registrants have taken to the roads in preparation for the 26.2 mile race.

The Big Sur Marathon, which also includes a marathon relay, a 21 and 10.6 mile race, is on pace to sell out within one month. The April 26th marathon is approaching seventy percent full and there does not seem to be any slowing down in registration despite the economic downturn.

   British tourist Hennessy runs away with China Coast marathon trophy (South China Morning Post)
Andrew Hennessy was off the course record set in 1981 by nearly eleven minutes. But his time of 2 hours and 45 minutes was enough to win by almost ten minutes. Hennessy also won the Jersey Shore Marathon in 2007 and 2008.

The Dallas White Rock Marathon Corporation has launched a new half-marathon, to be run on March 15th. Registration will open next week, and will cost $55 until Feb. 15th.

Melanie Peters of St.Petersburg attempted to defend her Walt Disney World title despite recovering from a serious car accident and running the half-marathon the day before. She still mustered a 2 hour and 53 minute marathon, which was good enough for second place.

   Ethiopia's Less Known Runners Rake-In Millions (Addis Fortune)
Bezunesh Bekele finished fourth at the 2007 IAAF World Championship Half Marathon. She was able to win the Dubai Marathon this year in 2 hours 24 minutes and 1 second. She collected 250 thousand dollars for her victory which was almost one minutes slower than her second place finish last year.

Haile Gebrselassie just missed setting a new world record in the marathon. Heavy rain and wind thwarted his effort to break the 2 hour and 4 minute barrier. The current world record hold managed to win the Dubai Marathon despite the conditions with a time of 2 hours 5 minutes and 29 seconds

   Houston Marathon surrenders two records (Houston Chronicle)
Deriba Merga of Ethiopia won the Houston Marathon on Sunday by a wide margin, clock and final time of 2:07:52. The second-place runner, Benson Cheruiyot of Kenya, was nearly four minutes behind him. Despite the blistering pace, however, Merga was still dissatisfied: before the race he had been aiming for a time of 2:05, which would have been the fastest time ever posted on U.S. soil.
 
   Winners Thrilled By Progess (Houston Chronicle)
Meb Keflezighi, the silver medalist at the Athens Olympics in 2004, struggled with injuries much of last year -- but he won the Half Marathon Race in Houston on Sunday with a personal record time of 1:01:25. Magdalena Boulet, the women's winner, is also recovering from injuries.

Deriba Merga sailed alone for the last nine miles to capture the men's marathon title at the Houston Marathon with a time of 2 hours 7 minutes and 52 seconds despite swirling winds. His time smashed the twenty year old course record by over two minutes.

Travis Dodson, a 23-year-old Marine who lost both legs to a grenade in Iraq, will compete in the Chevron Houston Wheelchair Half Marathon on Sunday. This will only be Dodson's second race, but he is being coached by Wendy Gumbert-Mendoza, the U.S. national paralympics track coach, who says that Dodson may be capable of qualifying for the 2012 Paralympics and contending for a medal in 2016.

   Racing to lose, in the Houston Marathon (Houston Chronicle)
Two Houstonians, Norman Langwell of Huntsville and Marilyn Cook of Tomball, decided separately to begin running to lose weight, and between them have now lost over 300 pounds. For Langwell, the Houston Marathon will be his eighth full marathon, and Cook, running in the Aramco Services Company Half-Marathon, will be running her third half-marathon.
 
   Houston Marathon tip: Give your feet some wiggle room (Houston Chronicle)
The Houston Marathon takes place this coming Sunday and one of the tips offered for a better race is to leave shoe laces a little loose. Feet tend to swell up to 10% during the race which could curtail your race plans.
