 Carlsbad Marathon
  Post-Race Review/ Results
   Kenyan Nytipei transforms late entry into winning drive at Carlsbad. (The Union Tribune)
Kenya's Jacqueline Nytipei showed up late for the half marathon and sped from her ride right to the races finish line winning the 1/2 marathon by 20 seconds narrowly missing the course record. In the marathon Tesfaye Dirba of Ethiopia, took the men's race by four minutes in 2:19:26, and Diona Fulton of Somerville, Mass., raced to the women's title by well over six minutes in 3:07:56 despite difficulties over the final seven miles.

   Haile’s Beijing date with destiny (IAAF)
After winning the 2008 Dubai Marathon in 2:04:53, the big question for Ethiopian Haile Gebrselassie was about his plans for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Gebrselassie said that pollution in Beijing may force him to cancel his plans to compete int he Olympic Marathon distance. Allergies at the 2007 London Marathon caused him to drop out of the race.

   Gone in three seconds (Mumbai News)
If there ever was determination to qualify for the Olympics, India's Ram Singh Yadav should get kudos for the effort made. Yadav finished the 2008 Mumbai Marathon in a 2:18:23. Despite a personal best and a tenth place finish, Yadav was three seconds short of a B-Standard qualification time for the 2008 Olympics. It is uncertain if Yadav will attempt another marathon qualifier having run the Allahabad Marathon in November and Singapore in January.
 
   Marathon rides on big bucks (Hindustan Times)
Participants in the Mumbai marathon have more than doubled since the inaugural yeare in 2004. Investments in the fast growing race are keeping pace by increasing well over ten percent. Procam International, the race event organization, said they have bank investments from Hong Kong to New Jersey.

Wearing bright yellow T-shirts, runners in the Mumbai marathon clambered enthusiastically past the starting line at 8:10 am and proudly boasted the statement "Chronologically 69, energetically 39" The group of runners makes up an aging population of runners maintaining health and exuberance and sharing that enthusiasm with young and old alike.

Mumbai Marathon'08 was one of the city's largest events to not only bring the city together, but film stars 'warmed up' to it as well. Hailed as the ultimate test of stamina, grit and gumption Mumbai Marathon saw actors and common athletes that entered the race to support personal causes like 'make Mumbai crime-free'. The runners were joined by Bollywood celebs who added a dash of glamour to the event and help create more of a frenzy surrounding the marathon.

   Dream Run din drowns Ram Singh Yadav’s effort (The Indian Express)
Beijing Olympic hopeful Ram Singh Yadav missed the B-standard qualification for the 2008 Olympics Games. Yadav held in with the Kenyans in the first 10-15K; but despite the sprint to the finish he saw his Olympic dreams fade when he missed the cut-off time by three seconds. Radav finished in a personal best 2:18:23.

   Myrtle Beach Marathon ahead of the pack (The SUN NEWS of Myrtle Beach)
The 11th annual Myrtle Beach marathon has squeaked into the top 10 USA marathons according to Runner's World editor Bart Yasso. The race has surpassed longer running and larger races as one of the nations best organized and scenic races. Race co-organizer, Kelly McPherson, says the the marathon is on pace, once again, to surpass the 10,000 registration limit this year.

   Perfect weather for marathon running (The Herald Online)
874 athletes lengthened their strides in The Herald/Remax Marathon in South Africa. Vuso Nkonzo, won the 42.2km men‘s section with a time of 2:28:28 while Leanne Finlay won the women‘s section in 3:18:02. The race, organised by Achilles Athletics Club, is one of the most popular races in the province attracting many from all parts of South Africa.

Consider this year was the driest conditions in over 10 years and a new junior event was added the revenue generated will considerably help 10 local charities. According to a recent report from Marathonguide.com, a website company which focuses on marathon results, there are more and more marathoners finishing their races these days, in some cases they are getting slower and older.

   Athlete Ngetich Perishes in Ongoing Kenyan Violence (Race Results Weekly)
Kenyan marathoner Wesley Ngetich was murdered today as violence contiues around Kenya following the political election in December 2007. Ngetich was shot in the chest with an arrow in his hometown of Trans Mara, not far from Masai Mara. Ngetich, two-time champion of Grandma's Marathon in 2005 and 2007 and second at the 2006 Houston Marathon in 2006, had planned to run the Rock 'N' Roll Marathon in Arizona, but was unable to leave the country at that time.

   Only Two Dozen Finish Hawaii Ultra Marathon (KHNL)
The eighth annual 100-mile Hawaii Ultra Marathon had twenty four finishers. Muddy terrain, elevation and wet conditions on the Oahu course made it extrememly difficult for the runners. Local Gordon Lau, age 54, came in fifth.

   Ramaala edged in sprint finish (News24.com)
Zimbabwe's Wirimai Juwawo outsprinted former New York Marathon champion Hendrick Ramaala by six seconds to win the 2008 Nedbank Half Marathon in Pretoria in a finish of 64:35. Despite the difficult course and cool, rainy conditions, Ramaala is pleased with his performance in his first race of 2008. He has not competed since 2007 New York City Marathon.
 
 Rock 'n' Roll Marathon

   Original Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Begins New Decade in San Diego (eWire News)
Sunday June 1, 2008 marks a new decade for the Rock N Roll marathon in San Diego. The race features live bands at every mile along the course and water stations with themes to motivate and cheer runners. Runners are encouraged to register before the entry fee is raised on January 31st.
 
 Rotterdam Marathon

   Former winners return to battle on faster course in Rotterdam (IAAF)
Kenyans Joshua Chelanga and Jimmy Muindi, former champinos of the Rotterdam Marathon, will return to the 2008 marathon. Last year's winner Chelanga won under warm conditions in 2:08:21. Muindi had a personal best at the 2005 Rotterdam Marathon which he incidentally won in 2:07:50.
 
 Saipan Marathon

   Nobuyuki, Mamiko conquer Saipan Marathon (Saipan Tribune)
Japan's Nobuyuki Yamamoto and Saipan resident Mamiko Oshima won the third Saipan Marathon. Yamamoto won the men's race in 3:19:46 and Oshima won the women's race in 3:51:28.

   Huckabee Claims He Has The Momentum, Trains For Marathon (Today's THV)
Presidential hopeful former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee ran several miles in Columbia, South Carolina while voters cast their ballots in the state's Republican primary. Despite his busy schedule, Huckabee looks forward to both races.

   Runner scores another one for New England (North Country Times)
New Englander Diona Fulton won the women's race at the 17th annual Carlsbad Marathon in a time of 3:07:56. Ethiopian Tesfaye Dirba won the men's race in 2:19.26, his sub-2:20 finish since 2002.
 
 Mumbai Marathon
  Post-Race Review/ Results
   Kelai, Seboka take Mumbai Marathon titles (IAAF)
At the 2008 Mumbai Marathon, in the Ethiopian Mulu Seboka won the women's race for the third time and defending champion Kenyan John Kelai won the men's race. Seboka finished in a personal best time and course record of 2:30:03 which is three minutes off her last Mumbai Marathon finish. Kelai outsprinted Ethiopian Tariku Jifar and Philemon Boit to finish in 2:12:22.
 
   Kelai wins Mumbai Marathon for a second year (India Times)
Defending champion John Kelai of Kenya sprinted away from the pack of three in the last few kilometers to win the 2008 Mumbai Marathon in a 2:12:22. Following close behind were Ethiopia's Tariku Jufar runner up in a 2:12:28 and Kenya's Philemon Boit at 2:12:35. In the women's race Ethiopia's Mulu Seboka had her third win and set a new course record in 2:30:03.

   Grandpa's Off to Run a Marathon (Bangkok Post)
Having been forced to retire from farming by his children, seventy year old group of young people Grandfather Peng was inspired to start running by the group of young people running past his house in Ratchaburi, Thailand. It wasn't until he was 72 years of age that he discovered the marathon distance and ran the Chom Bung Marathon. his personal best to date is 4:20.

Don't mess with a marathoner, at least not Margo Foster, a marathon runner with a black belt in karate. After witnessing a burglar fleeing her home with her belongings, Foster chased him and used force to retain him until authorities came.

John Piggott has competed in fifty-eight marathons since 1999 and is rated thirty-fourth in the world in the age 40-44 division. Piggott debuted in the marathon distance at the 1999 Richmond Newspapers Marathon and despite the painful experience kept at it. His finish times are three to five minutes slower than his personal best from 2003 of 2:30:14.

 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Women's Marathon

   Local runners form a competitive bond (The Washington Times)
Kristen Henehan and Lisa Thomas have achieved their qualifying times for the U.S. Olympic marathon trials in two different ways. Both raced against each other for the first time, competing down the stretch at the Marine Corps Marathon. Missing the qualification mark, both ran the 2008 Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon and qualified with a 2:45:12 and 2:46:11 respectively.

   Lance runs on Boston (Boston Herald)
Lance Armstrong, the seven-time Tour de France champion qualified for Boston by finishing the 2007 ING New York City Marathon in 2 hours, 46 minutes and 43 seconds. At 36 Armstrong easily qualified for the Boston Marathon by running under 3:15 for his 35-39-year-old age group.
 
 Carlsbad Marathon

   10,000 runners to compete in Sunday's sold-out Carlsbad Marathon (Coastal)
With 10,000 runners scheduled to race in one of the three scenic races this coming Sunday, it is easy to understand why registration for both races closed three weeks ago and organizers are not accepting more entries. Race director Flanagan said local charities still have a few entries they are auctioning as fundraisers.
 
   Music lovers run into opposition (Sign on San Diego)
The trend seems to be growing to ban the use of wearing headphones and portable music players during races. Mostly affecting recreation runners, the concept has also been adopted by the Carlsbad Marathon. The ban, passed in December 2006 by USA Track & Field, the sport's governing body, has sparked a national debate among runners.

   A world-class runner struggles to train in peace (Gulf News)
Third fastest marathoner in the world, Sammy Korir finds training difficult in Kenya where the country still remains unsettled due to continued post-election violence. Having overcome a year plagued by running injuries, Korir planned to race better at the 2008 Dubai Marathon. Korir finished third in a 2:08:01.
