   Marathon Gets Beverage Sponsor (The Jacksonville Financial News and Daily Record)
Donna: The National Marathon to Fight Breast Cancer, a Florida marathon being held to raise money for breast cancer research and patients, has found a sponsor. TalkingRain, a beverage company, will offer financial support to the race, which will be held on February 15 and was founded by three-time breast cancer survivor Donna Deegan, a local news anchor.

   Denver Marathon to become "Rock 'N' Roll" race (The Denver Post)
The Competitor Group, which owns marathons across the country (including the Phoenix Rock 'n' Roll Marathon, the San Diego Rock 'n' Roll Marathon, and Nashville's Country Music Marathon) has acquired the Denver Marathon.
 
 New Orleans Mardi Gras Marathon

   The New Orleans Mardi Gras Marathon will see an increase in participants this year (Times Picayune)
The online registration for the 2009 Mardigras Marathon has closed on-line registration with less than three-hundred slots available at the expo. The 2009 marathon and half-marathon will see some of the largest numbers of participants.

David Blackstone, founder and first president of the Nike Central Park Track Clud, has passed away at the age of 69. Blackstone, a criminal defense attorney and former marine, founded the team in 1962.

Kara Goucher, one of the top female marathoners in the U.S., will enter the mile race in the 2009 Millrose Games on January 30th. Goucher won the event in 2008, narrowly beating out Sara Hall -- the start of a very successful year that saw her place third in her debut marathon (the ING New York City marathon, no less).

   2009 Kili Marathon: Sponsors Increase Prizes (This Day (Tanzania))
The sponsors of this year's Kilimanjaro Marathon, Tanzania Breweries Limited and Standard Chartered Bank, have raised the prize money for both men and women running the marathon, the half-marathon, and the disabled race.

   Kuala Lumpur Marathon: FTAAA given the boot, Octagon to take over (New Straits Times)
The Federal Territory Amateur Athletic Association was forced out as event organizer of the Kuala Lumpur Marathon, replaced by the federal Malaysian Amateur Athletic Union (MAAU), which claimed jurisdiction under a 1997 law. This year the race has become part of the Standard Charter series of sponsored marathons.

Josh Cox smashed the American 50K record, which had stood for nearly seven years, by almost four and a half minutes. His last five miles were completed on a track after he finished the Rock N Roll Arizona Marathon. He completed the 31 mile race in 2 hours 47 minutes and 17 seconds.

   British tourist Hennessy runs away with China Coast marathon trophy (South China Morning Post)
Andrew Hennessy was off the course record set in 1981 by nearly eleven minutes. But his time of 2 hours and 45 minutes was enough to win by almost ten minutes. Hennessy also won the Jersey Shore Marathon in 2007 and 2008.

   Ethiopia's Less Known Runners Rake-In Millions (Addis Fortune)
Bezunesh Bekele finished fourth at the 2007 IAAF World Championship Half Marathon. She was able to win the Dubai Marathon this year in 2 hours 24 minutes and 1 second. She collected 250 thousand dollars for her victory which was almost one minutes slower than her second place finish last year.
 
 Houston Marathon

   Merga, Erkesso set records, win Houston Marathon (Houston Chronicle)
Deriba Merga sailed alone for the last nine miles to capture the men's marathon title at the Houston Marathon with a time of 2 hours 7 minutes and 52 seconds despite swirling winds. His time smashed the twenty year old course record by over two minutes.
 
   Winners Thrilled By Progess (Houston Chronicle)
Meb Keflezighi, the silver medalist at the Athens Olympics in 2004, struggled with injuries much of last year -- but he won the Half Marathon Race in Houston on Sunday with a personal record time of 1:01:25. Magdalena Boulet, the women's winner, is also recovering from injuries.
 
   Houston Marathon surrenders two records (Houston Chronicle)
Deriba Merga of Ethiopia won the Houston Marathon on Sunday by a wide margin, clock and final time of 2:07:52. The second-place runner, Benson Cheruiyot of Kenya, was nearly four minutes behind him. Despite the blistering pace, however, Merga was still dissatisfied: before the race he had been aiming for a time of 2:05, which would have been the fastest time ever posted on U.S. soil.

   Oops! Wrong winner felicitated at Mumbai Marathon (Hindu News)
Aruna Devi, from Manipur, was finally declared the winner of the women's Mumbai Marathon. Race organizers erroneously awarded the top honor to another runner when they did not realize that Devi had crossed the line minutes ahead of who they thought had won the women's race.

   Haile Gebrselassie's story set to run and run (Hindu Times)
When breathing was difficult for Haile Gebrselassie he was told to stop running all together. Since then he has become the only man to run under 2 hours and 4 minutes in the marathon. He has his eyes set on gold at the London Games in 2012.
 
 Redding Marathon

   Warm weather doesn't slow down Meissner (Record Searchlight)
The eighth annual Redding Marathon began at Shasta Damn Vista Point. Despite warmer than usual temperatures Sean Meissner of Sisters, Oregon, won the race in 2 hours, 45 minutes and 42 seconds, well ahead of second place.
 
 Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon

   Record day at P.F. Chang's Rock N Roll Marathon (Arizona Central)
While the overall course record of 2 hours 10 minutes and 33 records by Kenya's Haron Toroitich in the 2004 inaugural marathon will stand, the American 50K record was smashed by Josh Cox with a time of 2 hours and 47 minutes.
