   Local runners form a competitive bond (The Washington Times)
Kristen Henehan and Lisa Thomas have achieved their qualifying times for the U.S. Olympic marathon trials in two different ways. Both raced against each other for the first time, competing down the stretch at the Marine Corps Marathon. Missing the qualification mark, both ran the 2008 Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon and qualified with a 2:45:12 and 2:46:11 respectively.

In final weeks prior to marathon day rather than tapering, sports physiologists such as Greg McMillan think that mileage should only be lowered minumally in those final weeks rathern than doing the traditional tapering. Two weeks out, run fourteen to fifteen miles at an easy pace for your Sunday long run and make your last speed workout ten days out, Also, make sure you do get enough carbs without gaining weight.

   John Hancock Financial Announces Return of Defending Champions to Run 2008 Boston Marathon (PR Wire)
John Hancock Financial, a principal sponsor of the Boston Marathon, announced the return 2007 champions Kenyan Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot and Russian Lidiya Grigoryeva for the 112th running of the esteemed Boston Marathon. Cheruiyot will be going for his fourth win which would put him in the league of marathon greats Bill Rodgers and Clarence DeMar who have won the race four or more times.
 
   Defending Champions to Return to Boston (Race Results Weekly)
Organizers of the Boston Marathon announced the participation of 2007 defending champions Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot and Lidiya Grigoryeva for the 112th Boston Marathon. The Boston Marathon will actually be the second race of an extraordinary weekend of marathon running. On Sunday, April 20, the USA Olympic Team Trials - Women's Marathon will be contested on a special criterium course through Boston's Back Bay and nearby Cambridge.

   Lance runs on Boston (Boston Herald)
Lance Armstrong, the seven-time Tour de France champion qualified for Boston by finishing the 2007 ING New York City Marathon in 2 hours, 46 minutes and 43 seconds. At 36 Armstrong easily qualified for the Boston Marathon by running under 3:15 for his 35-39-year-old age group.

   Kenyan Nytipei transforms late entry into winning drive at Carlsbad. (The Union Tribune)
Kenya's Jacqueline Nytipei showed up late for the half marathon and sped from her ride right to the races finish line winning the 1/2 marathon by 20 seconds narrowly missing the course record. In the marathon Tesfaye Dirba of Ethiopia, took the men's race by four minutes in 2:19:26, and Diona Fulton of Somerville, Mass., raced to the women's title by well over six minutes in 3:07:56 despite difficulties over the final seven miles.

   Runner scores another one for New England (North Country Times)
New Englander Diona Fulton won the women's race at the 17th annual Carlsbad Marathon in a time of 3:07:56. Ethiopian Tesfaye Dirba won the men's race in 2:19.26, his sub-2:20 finish since 2002.

   10,000 runners to compete in Sunday's sold-out Carlsbad Marathon (Coastal)
With 10,000 runners scheduled to race in one of the three scenic races this coming Sunday, it is easy to understand why registration for both races closed three weeks ago and organizers are not accepting more entries. Race director Flanagan said local charities still have a few entries they are auctioning as fundraisers.
 
   Music lovers run into opposition (Sign on San Diego)
The trend seems to be growing to ban the use of wearing headphones and portable music players during races. Mostly affecting recreation runners, the concept has also been adopted by the Carlsbad Marathon. The ban, passed in December 2006 by USA Track & Field, the sport's governing body, has sparked a national debate among runners.

   Marathon Makeover Kicks off Saturday. (Clarion Ledger)
Started with a complaint and a challenge in 2004 by Mark Simpson and his marathon fanatic friend, the program aims to take most anyone and train them for the Chicago Marathon. The popularity of the program has grown from 20 people finishing the 2004 Chicago Marathon to well over 200. The program kicks off Saturday in Jackson, MS.

The National Black Marathoners' Association has selected the Cowtown Marathon for its 2009 Event. The NBMA seeks to encourage Black Americans and others to pursue a healthy life-style through long distance running and walking. As one of the largest events in the Southwest, Cowtown Marathon will be celebrating its thirtieth anniversary.

   Magical Martin books Olympic Marathon place (Westmeath Examiner)
After a set-back over a visa difficulty forcing him to drop out of the Houston Marathon, Irishman Martin Fagan qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing at the Dubai Marathon; but the qualifier did not come without its own share of pain. Fagan was on a 2:10 pace, then encountered spasms in his back and right hip after the 25k mark. He crossed the line collapsing in pain and was brought to hospital; but managed the qualification time.

   Dubai Marathon: The Unsung Heroes (Xpress Sport)
The 2008 Dubai Marathon had some top running heroes headlining the race, but there are many that had not had a mention, such as 84-year-old Swede Sven Ol-Mars who finished the race in just over six hours. Ol-Mars has run over fifty marathons.

   Sammy Korir Becomes First Man to Run 10 sub-2:09 Marathons (IAAF)
Following the 2008 Dubai Marathon, Sammy Korir became the first man to run ten sub-2:09 marathons in a lifetime. Korir's personal best is 2:04:56 at the 2003 Berlin Marathon where he paced Paul Tergat to the former world record. Stefano Baldini is scheduled to run the 2008 Flora London Marathon where he could become the first man with fourteen lifetime sub-2:10s.

   Haile’s Beijing date with destiny (IAAF)
After winning the 2008 Dubai Marathon in 2:04:53, the big question for Ethiopian Haile Gebrselassie was about his plans for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Gebrselassie said that pollution in Beijing may force him to cancel his plans to compete int he Olympic Marathon distance. Allergies at the 2007 London Marathon caused him to drop out of the race.

   Haile Gebrselassie pays the price at Dubai Marathon (Telegraph)
Ethiopia's Haile Gebrselassie won the Dubai Marathon and 250,000 dollars in prize money. He was unable to beat the world record of 2hr 04min 26sec he set in Berlin in September. His failure by 27 seconds meant that Gebreselassie missed out on a bonus of one million dollars. Kenyan duo Isaac Macharia and Sammi Korir netted 100,000 and 50,000 dollars respectively after finishing in second and third positions behind Gebrelassie in Dubai. Ethiopian's took a cleansweep of the podium in the women's race, with Birhane Adere finishing first in 2:22:42 to also bank the winner's prize purse of 250,000 dollars
 
   A world-class runner struggles to train in peace (Gulf News)
Third fastest marathoner in the world, Sammy Korir finds training difficult in Kenya where the country still remains unsettled due to continued post-election violence. Having overcome a year plagued by running injuries, Korir planned to race better at the 2008 Dubai Marathon. Korir finished third in a 2:08:01.

   Distance Races Run Into Glitch (Tampa Bay Online)
Tampa race organizers for the Gasparilla Distance Classic, which includes the Bank of America Marathon, are thinking of pulling the plug on using the new timing system they have slated for race day. Contracted to use Michigan-based SAI Timing, SAI Timing's new electronic timing device failed to work at the 2007 Honolulu Marathon leading to a runner and race director's worst nightmare. Race officials may switch back to using Championchip since more than 17,000 runners are expected to participate in race weekend.

   Miami Marathon a welcome escape for Kenyan runners (Miami Herald)
Five elite racers from Kenya escape from the violence occurring in their home country to participate in the 2008 Miami Marathon. They have altered their lives - for training they try to stay within 5 kilometers of his home. These runners are defending champion Jared Nyamboki, Wilson Chepkwony, Sammy Nyamongo, William Serem and Wesley Chelule.

   Miami Marathon will have Olympic feel (The Sun-Sentinel)
With the participation of US Olympic team member Brian Sell in the Miami Marathon's Half Marathon, race organizers are encouraging spectators to wear red, white and blue and bring small flags to wave and help promote the "Miami to Beijing" theme at Sunday's race. Other Hansons-Brooks Distance Project will be participating as well. Hansons-Brooks Distance Project. Because of the political unrest in Kenya, Chemokil Chilapong, Evans Ogaro and Penuel Nyagaka Osoro were forced to withdraw from the marathon.

   Headphone ban falls on Miami runners' deaf ears (Miami Herald Tribune)
For safety reasons, USA Track and Field, the sport's governing body, prohibits the use of iPods and other headphone devices in running events; but the Miami Marathon is not enforcing the ban. Race director Robert Pozo does agree that headphones, mp3 players, sunglasses with flap-down speakers and the like are hazardous, but he is following the lead of the Walt Disney World and New York City Marathons.

   UM med school dean ready to run Miami Marathon (Miami Herald)
Pascal Goldschmidt, 53, dean of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, runs and stays very fit for life and his demanding job. With a Miami Marathon best of just under 4 hours, he motivates others to run and serves as one of the most well known cardiologists in the country.    Three Kenyans out of Miami Marathon (Miami Herald)
One woman and two men from Kenya have pulled out of Sundays Miami Marathon. Among the elite athletes are Evans Ogaro, 41, and Penuel Nyagaka Osoro, 35, of Eldoret. Ogaro finished in second place in 2:15:28 at the 2006 Rhein Marathon in Bonne, Germany. Osoro's has a personal record of 2:11 in the marathon back in 2002. He ran 2:15:43 at Bonne, Germany in 2005. The marathoners train in Eldoret which has been beset by violence since the disputed presidential election in late December, 2007
 
   For runners, it's 26.2 miles and 1 goal: to finish the Miami Marathon (Miami Herald)
Nearly 3,700 runners will vacate their cars this Sunday morning and run 26.2 miles. Roughly covering the distance from Ft.Lauderdale to Miami. Jasper Bell, entering his fiftieth plus marathon, it is all about being in the race together with the other runners. They all have one goal: Get to the finish line.

PR Racing and Avis Rent A Car System, LLC announced today that Juan Carlos Gil and Staff Sergeant Dustin Tuller have won the 2008 Avis "We Try Harder" award in conjunction with the ING Miami Marathon. The award honors individuals who endeavor to overcome considerable obstacles through courage and extraordinary effort. Juan Carlos Gil, a member of the Achilles Track Club, was born with cerebral palsy. Staff Sergeant Dustin Tuller is an Iraqi war veteran who suffered severe gunshot wounds and lost both his legs as a result.

Mumbai Marathon'08 was one of the city's largest events to not only bring the city together, but film stars 'warmed up' to it as well.
