 A Run Through Time
  Pre-Race Review/ Lineup
   Chaffee County Running Club members will host the fourth annual Run Through Time Marathon/Half Marathon (The Mountain Mail)
The Run through time will go from Salida to Turret, Colorado and return on a rigorous trail back to Salida. The gun goes off at 9 am in front of the Scout Hut in Salida. The March 15th race was dreamed up by Rickie Redland and Jon MacManus of Salida on a long run. They encourage runners to simply run and have fun while doing it. With and entry fee of only 35 dollars for the marathon, Redland and ManManus expect a large gathering of local runners.

It's no longer a feat to complete one marathon, many like are setting goals of multiple marathons in consecutive days and doing it in the name of charity. Peter Ferris and Robert Robb will run an epic six marathons in six counties in six days raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support and the Alzheimer's Society. They begin the challenge on May 5, 2008 at the Belfast Marathon, then to races in Downpatrick, Armagh, Enniskillen and Omagh, before finally completing the challenge in Limavady.

   Warming Up for the Seoul International Marathon (Donga)
Around 70 athletes will compete in Jeju as preparation for the March 16th Seoul International Marathon. Choi Gyeong-ryeol, who coaches many of the athletes uses the 8km race to prepare his athletes legs for the marathon. Athletes train on the hills usually the day after their long of ninety minutes or more.
 
 Napa Valley Marathon

   Napa Valley Marathon to turn 30 (Napa Valley Register)
Celebrating its 30th year, the 2008 Napa Valley Marathon is expecting a sold-out field of 2,300 runners. The race has again been selected by the Road Runners Club of America as its National Marathon Championships. Open field and Masters winners will once again receive commemorative etched wine bottles and the open winners will also receive their weight in Napa Valley wines provided by the Silverado Trail Wineries Association.

The acquisition trend continues in the endurance sports industry with the purchase of the Rocky Mountain Half Marathon by the Denver Marathon race organizers. This is following the purchases of Elite Racing, Competitive and Triathlete Magazines by private equity firm Falconhead Capital.

   Record-Breaker Scanlon Has Just Run Seven Marathons on Seven Continents in Seven Months (The Mayo News)
He may not be the fastest marathoner, but while crossing the finish at the 2008 Mumbai Marathon Mark Scanlon became the youngest man in history to run seven marathons on seven continents in seven months. The twenty-four year old took the 777 Challenge to raise money for the Irish Cancer Society, in memory of his father who died from cancer in 1999. Scanlan ran in San Francisco, Longford, Sydney, Nairobi, Buenos Aires, the Antarctic, and Mumbai.

   Ethiopia's Debele Lemma Wins Marrakech International Marathon (Magharebia)
Siyoum Debele Lemma, of Ethiopia, ran 8 seconds faster than the 2007 winning time by Samy Chumba,of Kenya, (2:10.56). Lemma won the 19th Marrakech International Marathon on Sunday. His fellow countrywoman Yeshi Esayias won the women's race in 2:35.40 easily outdistancing her compatriot by nearly 13 minutes.
 
 Miami Marathon

   Garcia, Lijleblad win Miami Marathon (S.I.)
Jose Garcia, of Guatemala finished the Miami Marathon with a time of 2:17.43 which was good enough to win. Garcia pulled away in the last mile and a half to beat Kenyan runner Samuel Kiprotich, 2:18:14, and Ethiopian runner Demesse Tafera, 2:18:29. Kelly Lijleblad held on to win the women's race in 2:47:13, beating Russian runner Nedezha Tuptova, who had a time of 2:48:09. Brian Sell of Rochester Hills, Mich., set a new course record in the half marathon, finishing in 1:03:46.

   Importing Olympic athletes isn't going to fool anybody (Guardian Unlimited)
Rumors are spreading in England that a "foreign legion" of athletes are being imported to help Britain win more medals in 2012. it's certainly not a new thing. This is not a new thing, for example Zoila Budd applied for British citizenship just in time for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
 
   Irish Man Breaks 7-7-7 Marathon Record (RTE)
Mark Scanlon raised €20,000 for the Irish Cancer Society while he was breaking the age record for the youngest person to run 7 marathons, 7 months, 7 continents. The trip started in San Francisco and ended in India last week.
 
   Beijing says six workers have died on Olympic projects (CBC Sports)
In Beijing's effort to complete construction for the 2008 Olympics Games in August, a Chinese official says six workers have died over the past five years working on venues for the Beijing Olympics. Two of those deaths took place in consturcting the National Stadium which will house the opening and closing games among other events. The Times newspaper of London reported that officials are covering up deaths and at least 10 workers had died working on the project.

   Yamauchi Taking a Breather (Sporting Life)
After a victory at the 2008 Osaka Ladies International Marathon, Mara Yamauchi is taking a break. The 35 year old Brit is a likely candidate for Great Britain's Olympics Marathon team alongside Paula Radcliffe. Yamauchi won in a 2:25:10.
 
 Surf City Marathon (prev. Pacific Shoreline Marathon)

   Thousands to invade Surf City (OC Register)
The Surf City Marathon, formerly known as the Pacific Shoreline Marathon, will be celebrating its third year. 16,000 runners will be participating in the sold-out event. The ocean front marathon has an appeal that keeps runners coming to race in Orange County.

   Dana-Farber friends run for their health (The Boston Herald)
Patient Partners held their annual breakfast to allow more than 30 competitors in the Boston Marathon to meet cancer patients whom they have been paired with. The program, which started in 1992, has worked to pair runners and provide a great connection for those with critical illness within the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

   Jackson Metro Residents Prepare for Chicago Marathon (WLBT)
Nearly 40,000 participants will begin preparation for the Chicago Marathon in October. Two-hundred hopefuls gathered in Jackson, MS for the start of the 36 week Marathon Makeover program aimed at achieving what many think to be impossible.
 
 Cowtown Marathon

The Cowtown Marathon has added a 50-kilometer ultramarathon race to the 2008 event festivities to celebrate their 30th anniversary. 50 kilometers is only five miles longer than a marathon, but for a new ultra runner, that five miles extra means everything.

   Ethiopian Double at the Marrakech Mmarathon (IAAF)
Ethiopians had a double triumph at the 2008 International Marrakech marathon. Siyoum Debele Lemma won the men’s race in 2:10:48 and Yeshi Esayias won the women’s race in 2:35:40. It was the nineteeth running of the marathon.
 
 Miami Marathon

   Garcia wins Miami Marathon (The Ledger)
Jose Garcia of Guatemala won the 2008 Miami Marathon in a 2:17:43. Kenyan runner Samuel Kiprotich placed second with a time of 2:18:14 and Ethiopian runner Demesse Tafera finished at 2:18:29. Kelly Lijleblad of Boulder, Colorado, won the women's race in 2:47:13, beating Russian runner-up Nedezha Tuptova who trailed by a minute.
 
   Great day for marathoners in Miami (Miami Herald)
More than 10,000 runners, including an international elite field, competed in the 2008 ING Miami Marathon and Half Marathon. Jose Amado Garcia of Guatemala, the Pan American Games silver medalist, won the 26.2-mile marathon in 2:17:43. American Kelly Liljeblad won the marathon in 2:47:13, but missed the qualifying time for the U.S. Olympic Women's Marathon Trials by thirteen seconds.
 
   Sell sets course record in Miami half marathon (Palm Beach Post)
Brian Sell, US Olympic Marathon team member, ran a personal best and a course record of 1:03:46 at the Miami Half Marathon. In the marathon Jose Garcia, of Colombia won the men's race and Kelly Liljeblad of Boulder, Co. won the women's race.

   Meghalaya Man’s Dream Run: from Cowherd to Marathon-Winner (Indian Express)
Beningstar Lyngkhoi is India's national record holder witha time of 2:17:32 from the 33rd National Games at Guwahati. Lyngkhoi is one of India's last hopes for a marathon Olympic team. He has received the U Kiang Nongbah Award for excellence in sports by Meghalaya Governor S S Sidhu.
 
   McKenna family appreciative of support (The Galveston County Daily News)
Twenty year old Andi McKenna passed away tragically in a car accident. Residents of the Houston area continue to find an open heart and wallet to raise funds for Camp Summit in Argyle. The Camp, where Andi worked, will name the new Arts & Crafts Building after Andi when it opens in 2011 for all the money that has been donated by running the Houston Marathon as a fund raising effort.

The marathon is fast becoming one the spotlights for publicity for politicians, actors and superstars from other sports. The New York marathon has attracted the likes of Armstrong, Holmes and most recently Mike Huckabee has entered the Boston race. Not to be out done, the Dubai marathon is busting through the finish line tape with it fair share of stars from different venues

   Britain's Yamauchi wins Osaka Ladies Marathon in 2:25:10 (IAAF)
Britain's Mara Yamauchi won the 2008 Osaka Ladies Marathon in a 2:25:10. Japanese track star, Kayoko Fukushi, who was slated as one to watch in her debut marathon, pulled away at the 1km marker and ran alone for the next 33k could not hold onto the lead as the lead pack caught her shortly after. Japanese Tomo Morimoto was second in a 2:25:34 and Kenyan Julia Mombi was third in a 2:26:00. Also of note, Romanians Lidia Simon who was three time winner of the Osaka Marathon from 1998 to 2000 finished sixth in a 2:27:17 and Constantina Tomescu-Dita finished ninth in a 2:28:15.

   Fukushi all set for long trek into unknown in Osaka International Marathon (Daily Yomiuri Online)
Kayoko Fukushi is Japan's leading 10,000 meter and half-marathon specialist. She will open her marathon career on Sunday at the Osaka International Ladies Marathon. She is hoping for her Olympic birth into Beijing for 2008 and would need a roughly at 2:23 marathon time to claim the last spot on the team.

 Dubai Marathon

   Magical Martin books Olympic Marathon place (Westmeath Examiner)
After a set-back over a visa difficulty forcing him to drop out of the Houston Marathon, Irishman Martin Fagan qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing at the Dubai Marathon; but the qualifier did not come without its own share of pain. Fagan was on a 2:10 pace, then encountered spasms in his back and right hip after the 25k mark. He crossed the line collapsing in pain and was brought to hospital; but managed the qualification time.
 
 Miami Marathon

   Miami Marathon a welcome escape for Kenyan runners (Miami Herald)
Five elite racers from Kenya escape from the violence occurring in their home country to participate in the 2008 Miami Marathon. They have altered their lives - for training they try to stay within 5 kilometers of his home. These runners are defending champion Jared Nyamboki, Wilson Chepkwony, Sammy Nyamongo, William Serem and Wesley Chelule.

   Kenya's Olympic hopefuls forced to choose between training and survival (Guardian Limited)
As violence continues to escalate following the presidential election in Kenya, elite runners have been forced to cut training after receiving death threats and many have been accused of contributing to post-election violence. Fifty-six runners among them, Ezekiel Kemboi, the reigning Olympic 3,000m steeplechase champion, and Evans Rutto, 2004 London Marathon champion, signed a statement dismissing the allegations and complaining of being trailed by security agents. William Mutwol, bronze medalist at the 1992 Olympics, received a text message saying his "head would be turned into soup". Moses Kiptanui, regarded as a steeplechase great, recorded a complaint with the police about harassment from the police; but very little is being done.
 
 Osaka Int'l Ladies Marathon

   Kano runs in Osaka for keeps this time (Daily Yomiuri Online)
Yuri Kano who debbuted at last year's Osaka Ladies International Marathon will be all business in the 2008 race. With hopes of qualifying for the Japanese Olympic team, Kano has stiff competition in the field with the likes of Japan's top long-distance runner Kayoko Fukushi and others. Her finish at the 2007 Osaka race was 2:24:43, the fifth-fastest debut time by a Japanese.
