Maine’s fall foliage is hitting its peak and hundreds of marathoners from across North America will hit theirs at Sunday’s Mount Desert Island Marathon. The 26.2-mile journey from downtown Bar Harbor to down-town Southwest Harbor starts at 8 a.m. Defending champion David Herr of Vermont returns to defend his title, but some of Maine’s finest runners, including Eric Rudolph, Andy Beardsley, Steve McCarthy and Robbie Gomez are aiming to unseat the 43-year-old four-time champ.

   Nairobi Standard Chartered marathon launched (Kenyan Broadcasting Company)
The sixth edition of the Nairobi Standard Chartered international marathon was launched on Thursday at a Nairobi hotel.The marathon will be held on October 26, 2008. Speaking during the unveiling of the marathon route Nairobi Mayor Geoffrey Majiwa said the council is now stepping in to support the Marathon as the host City. It is the first time since the marathon's inception 6 years ago that Nairobi City council is taking a central role in the event as the host city.

The fourteenth annual Toronto Marathon will be covering the streets of Toronto this Sunday. The events will attract about 12,000 participants for the marathon, half-marathon, 5-km run and a corporate relay. The Toronto Marathon is the largest and oldest marathon in Toronto and starts at Mel Lastman Square, runs through Forest Hill and around Casa Loma.

Many people have trained and planned for the October 19 Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon. The marathon events include the Saturn Health and Fitness Expo at Cobo Center. The hours for the expo are • Friday, October 17, 3 p.m. – 8 p.m. • Saturday, October 18, 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. • Saturday, October 18, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m., Youth Expo. New Balance is the official gear sponsor for the marathon.

   Expect traffic delays during KC Marathon (The Kansas City Star)
The Kansas City Marathon begins October 18 at seven in the morning and will close streets and disrupt bus service from downtown to 75th Street.The 26.2-mile event begins at Pershing Road and Grand Boulevard and ends up about three blocks away at the Freight House, 22nd Street and Baltimore Avenue.

   Long Beach Marathon was the Largest One Yet. (Press-Telegram)
John Parks of International City Racing said that this years Long Beach Marathon was the largest marathon in 24 years. He believes that the numbers for next years 25th anniversary race will crush this years 18,000 participant mark and may even move the finish line to accommodate the expected larger numbers.

The Two Cities Marathon will mark the kickoff of the first marathon in Fresno in nearly a decade. More than 1,900 runners from around the country and the world have signed up for the race and organizers expect Valley residents to increase the number in the days leading up to the November 9th marathon.

   Coffin Top Finisher at Valley Harvest Marathon (The Advertiser)
Alex Coffin of Saint John boldly predicted he would not only win the Valley Harvest Marathon, but do so in a new course record. He would have to beat David MacLennan’s course record of 2:34.52. Coffin went on to win but only ran 2 hours 41 minutes and 18 minutes. MacLennan would follow Coffin for second place in 2 hours 46 minutes and 44 seconds.

 Hartford Marathon

   Hartford Marathon: Impressive race by Flamino (Journal Inquirer)
26-year-old Patrick Moulton of Providence, finished the Hartford Marathon in 2 hours 21 minutes and 48 seconds. He shook off second place finisher Jonas Buud, Sweden, near the eighth mile. Buud kept pushing from just off the pace and would finish a mere 14 seconds off the lead

   Run With It: Hawaii's Marathon Isles (Hawaii Insider)
The Hawaii Ironman is not the only way to run a marathon on the island state. Hawaii is now home to five marathons. The newest is the Kauai Marathon which will be held on September 6, 2009. Honolulu will take place December 14 for the 35th anniversary. The longstanding Kilauea Volcano Marathon was discontinued after the last race this past July due to environmental concerns.
 
 New Denver Marathon

Registration for the New Denver Marathon will end Wednesday night. The marathon is joined with a half-marathon event and a team relay. Registration for the mile high event costs $105.

   Country Music Marathon gains momentum with out-of-state runners (The Tennessean)
On April 25, 2009, the Country Music Marathon will celebrate its tenth anniversary in Nashville. Last year, 30,693 people registered for the marathon and half-marathon event, and 26,671 of them crossed the finish line outside LP Field. Over 60 percent of those runners and walkers were from outside Tennessee, showing that Nashville is not just a country music capital anymore.

   Las Vegas Marathon owner teaming with San Diego firm (San Francisco Chronicle)
Las Vegas Marathon chief executive Chris Devine said an agreement between his Chicago-based company, Devine Racing, and the Competitor Group Inc. will put the race on firm financial footing. The Las Vegas race, beginning in 2009, would be called the Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Marathon.
 
 Soweto Marathon

   Gearing up for Soweto Marathon (Sowetan)
The Soweto Marathon takes place when the whole world is focusing on South Africa with the 2009 Confederations Cup and 2010 World Cup coming to the shores of Soweto. The marathon, which takes place on November 2, the same day as the New York City Marathon, will attract approximately 15,000 participants.

   80-year-old runner sets marathon record at Royal Victoria Marathon (Times Colonists)
Betty Jean McHugh set a world record Sunday at the 29th Royal Victoria Marathon. McHugh finished the 26.2 mile race in 4 hours 36 minutes and 52 seconds to set the new marathon world record for women in the 80 year old category. McHugh took 13 minutes off the record of Helen Klein, who ran the New York City Marathon in four hours, 49 minutes and 52 seconds in 2004.

 Chicago Marathon

   Another Hot and Steamy Marathon in Chicago (The New York Times)
After running the Chicago Marathon on a cloudless day with the temperature in the mid-80s, 30 degrees too warm for an optimum race of 26.2 miles most of the 33,000 participants place the provided ice bags on their heads to cool down. Evans Cheruiyot of Kenya won Sunday in 2 hours 6 minutes 25 seconds. Lidiya Grigoryeva of Russia took the women’s race in 2:27:17. For the average runners, the ones who stayed on the course for four hours or more, their faces red with heat and exertion, simply crossing the finish line was victory enough.

   Chicago Marathon sends 61 to hospitals (Chicago Sun-Times)
Of the 45,000 who registered for the Chicago marathon, 33,033 started the race. Dr. George Chiampas, medical director for the marathon, said there were 110 calls for medical transport during the race, including people transported to medical-aid tents along the race course. Of the 110, 61 runners were taken to hospitals.

   Cheruiyot wins Chicago Marathon (KBC)
Kenya's Evans Cheruiyot won the Chicago marathon title in a close race. Cheruiyot won $140,000 in prize and bonus money, and Russian Grigoryeva took home the $100,000 first place women's winner's check. The victory did not come easy for the 26 year-old Cheruiyot as he broke away from runner-up David Mandago, 30, of Kenya in the 25th mile and won the men's race by a minute and 12 seconds in 2 hours, 6 minutes and 25 seconds. Mandago was second.
 
   Grand Kenyan Evans Cheruiyot Wins Chicago Marathon (Chicago Sun-Times)
Running in just his second marathon, Evans Cheruiyot won the 2008 Chicago Marathon in 2:06:27.
 
   American Desiree Davila's Patience Pays Off In Chicago Marathon (Chicago Tribune)
Desriee Davilla's time of 2:31:33 was good for a fifth place finish in the women's race at the 2008 Chicago Marathon. She was also the top female American finisher.
 
   Conditions Right For Lidiya Grigoryeva At The Chicago Marathon (Chicago Tribune)
Lidiya Grigoryeva won the women's division at the 2008 Chicago Marathon with here time of 2:27:17.
 
   Kurt Fearnley Wins Wheelchair Division of Chicago Marathon (Chicago Tribune)
The winner of the Paralympics Marathon in Beijing won the Wheelchair division a the 2008 Chicago Marathon.
