 Chicago Marathon

   Ranking women's marathoners, 1 to 10 (Los Angeles Times)
Constantina Tomescu-Dita of Romania was certainly earned a noteworthy place in marathon history on August 17, 2008 in Beijing. At 38 she became the oldest competitor, of either gender, to win an Olympic Gold Medal in the marathon. She will compete again at this weekends Chicago Marathon and it could add to her status among the top ten greatest women marathon runners.

   Friends plan to run Chicago marathon in honor of UW pharmacy student Adam Nickel. (The Daily Cardinal)
A group of University of Wisconsin Madison students will be running the Chicago Marathon in honor of Adam Nickel who passed suddenly as he finished the Little Rock Marathon on March 2. Nickel had raised over $3,800 dollars for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society as he trained for the San Diego Marathon.
 
   Chicago Marathon to add medical stations in case going gets tough (Medill Reports Chicago)
The number of Chicago Marathon participants that required medical care during last year's race has prompted race officials to staff medical aid stations throughout the course for access to anyone who may feel the effects that running a marathon will bring. Medical advisers continue to encourage participants to drink water and stay well hydrated.

   Dublin Marathon highlights on Setanta (Setanta Sports)
Setanta Sports will broadcast the Dublin Marathon and provide a further one hour broadcast of the highlights of the entire race a few days after. The 29th Dublin Marathon will honor Noel Carroll who established the race in 1980.

   Kaua'i Marathon announced for fall 2009 (The Garden Island News)
Jeff Sacchini has organized the inaugural Kaua'i Marathon to kick off September of 2009. The course has been marked and officials are excited to build a world class event. The race is limited to 1,500 participants and capped with a 7 hour time limit.

   Bates professor, historian stricken after Maine Marathon (The Sun Journal)
Shortly after the Maine Marathon, in Portland Maine, Bates professor Douglas Hodgkin apparently suffered a heart attack. The professor emeritus was recovering in a Portland hospital on Tuesday. He began feeling ill while receiving a massage after the race and was rushed to the hospital.

   Mid-South Marathon set for 10th anniversary November 1 (Times Herald)
The Cross Country Ramblers Association of Wynne Arkansas will hold the tenth annual Midsouth Marathon Championships on Saturday November 1. The out and back course boasts of creative aid stations that race officials offer prizes for the best support.
 
 New York City Marathon

   Radcliffe heads to Portsmouth for New York City Marathon warm up. (The Sporting Life)
Paula Radcliffe has chosen to warm up for the defense of her New York Marathon title by racing in the 10-mile Bupa Great South Run in Portsmouth on October 26. This will be the weekend before she appears in America for her first 26-miler, the New York City Marathon on November 2, since the Olympics in August.

   'Thoner Runs New York City Marathon For Fallen Pal. (New York Post)
During the Men's Olympic Marathon Trials in New York City, Abdi Abdirahman stood next to his roommate and training partner, Ryan Shay, for the last time. New York was a heartbreaking race for Abdi. A hip injury forced him to drop out of the race and he lost Ryan suddenly to cardiac arrhythmia.

   Soweto Marathon: ‘All systems go for People’s Race’ (Sowetan)
The Soweto Marathon will be held on Sunday, November 2. Race day events include a 10 kilometer run, 20 kilometer walk, and 5 kilometer fun run along with the marathon. The events will start at Elkah Stadium in Moroka. Lesotho-born Teboho Sello won last year's marathon in a time of 2 hours 18minutes and 51 seconds.

   Weather forecast pleases Chicago Marathon officials (Chicago Tribune)
Organizers of this year's 31st Chicago Marathon promise more water and more Gatorade. The weather forecasters have promised overcast, dreary skies which some runners will call perfect conditions considering the debacle of last year's race. Heat and humidity forced officials to cut short the 26.2 mile race.

   Honolulu Marathon sues provider of timing system (Honolulu Advertiser)
The Honolulu Marathon had reached a $30,000 settlement with the timing company for the 2007 Honolulu Marathon for its inability to collect times for thousands of runners. The Michigan based company failed to pay any of the money in the settlement and this has instigated the lawsuit.
 
 Kansas City Marathon

   KC Health & Fitness Expo Welcomes Nationally-ranked Marathoner (Kansas City InfoZine)
The Kansas City Marathon, slated for October 18th, is welcoming Dick Beardsley to their health and fitness expo. The expo opens on Thursday at 4pm and runs until 9pm and will be open until race day. The focus of this year's expo is on the prevention of childhood obesity.

The bike portion of the Lake Tahoe Marathon caused many local commuters aggravation on Saturday morning. Sandy Holbrook wrote in to the Sierra Sun to discuss her issues with alternate times and alternate routes for the cycling race.

   Driver arrested for trying to cross intersection as marathoners race in Twin Cities Marathon (Pioneer Press.)
Diann Helmers ran the Twin Cities marathon and has photos to prove it. Some of her photos will point out that the St. Paul Police Department took the marathon course very seriously as they arrested a St. Paul resident for crossing a barricaded road that was part of the marathon course.

 Brussels Marathon

   Ceulemans wins Brussels Marathon (IAAF.org)
More than 7000 athletes gathered at the Brussels Celebration Park facing chilly, windy and wet conditions before the Brussels Marathon. Rik Ceulemans won this year's edition in 2 hours, 19 minutes and 31 seconds. The 36-year old Belgian surprisingly beat pre-race favourite Willy Cheruiyot from Kenya in a race that was heavily affected by the cold and the rain.
 
 City of Los Angeles Marathon (L.A. Marathon)

   'Legacy Lou' has ideas for new Los Angeles Marathon management (Los Angeles Times)
Lou Briones has run all twenty-three City of Los Angeles Marathons. When Chicago based Devine Racing, who had been in control of the marathon, ran into financial trouble, Lou and several other Los Angeles Legacy runners began to organize a group to hold the race regardless. Enter Frank McCourt, owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers who bought the operating rights to the maratho n and will hold the 24th Los Angeles Marathon on February 19, 2009.

   Husband, wife prevail in Johnstown Marathon (The Tribune Democrat)
The 33rd Annual Johnstown Marathon finished at Point Stadium with the men's and women's winner holding the same last name. Mike McGee, 46, captured the men’s title with a time of 2 hours 47 minutes and 47 seconds. His wife, Gina, 43, repeated as women’s champion with a time of 2 hours 58 minutes and 53 seconds.
 
 Koeln (Cologne) Marathon

   2:10:03 course record for Kurgat in Cologne Marathon (IAAF.org)
Kenya’s Sammy Kurgat won the Cologne Marathon with a course record time of 2 hours 10 minutes and 3 seconds. Kurgat was leading a pack of ten runners through the half way point in 1 hour 4 minutes and 32 seconds before taking the checkered flag nearly 30 sceonds ahead of his fellow countryman and defending champion Daniel Too.
 
 Kosice Peace Marathon

   Fighing strong winds, Yirdawe takes Kosice Peace Marathon in 2:10:51 (IAAF.org)
30-year-old Ethiopian Dejene Yirdawe dominated the 85th International Peace Marathon in Kosice, East Slovakia. The oldest Marathon in Europe was held in 35 to 40 degree temperatures and in strong winds. But the rain was no where to be found. Yirdawe would leave the pace setter at the 24 kilometer mark and finish his solo run in 2 hours an 10 minutes to capture the title and his personal best marathon time in only his third marathon.
 
 Lakefront Marathon

   Huge lead leaves little in doubt at Lakefront Marathon (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel)
Just over 2,750 runners showed up to race the Lakefront Marathon. Brent Alexander wasted little time showing who would be the best runner. He left the field at mile 13 and went on to win with a personal best of 2 hours 28 minutes and 24 seconds. Mark Manz would cross in 2 hours 32 minutes and 31 seconds for the silver.
 
 Loch Ness Marathon

   Late switch pays off as Cherop claims top honors at Loch Ness Marathon (The Press and Journal)
EZEKIEL Cherop switched to the longer distance in yesterday's Loch Ness Marathon and this late decision to race the 26.2 race proved a major success as he led home the field of more than 2,000 competitors in a time of 2 hours 28 minutes and 3 seconds. The 23-year-old African was originally due to compete in the accompanying 10k, but decided to switch to the marathon after arriving in Inverness and wound up 29 seconds ahead of Alnwick's David Kirkland.
 
 Maine Marathon

   Siemers, Pagano win Maine Marathon (Portland Press Herald)
Art Siemers of Golden, Colorado out lasted Matt Dunlap by nearly 6 minutes of Falmouth to win the 17th Peak Performance Maine Marathon in 2 hours, 28 minutes, 24 seconds Sunday morning. Heather Pagano of Portland won the women's race in 3 hours 6 minutes and 54 seconds.
 
 St. George Marathon

   St. George Marathon: Soaked shirts, soggy socks, but spirits not dampened (Salt Lake Tribune)
First the first time in 25 years, the St. George Marathon had to start in rain and a soggy course. Southern Utah University runner Mark Currell broke away from the pack at about seven miles to cruise to the five-minute margin of victory over former BYU runner Nick McCombs in 2 hours, 28 minutes, 40 seconds. Christina Gingras, who ran nearly 6 minutes faster than her race last year, won the women's marathon in 2 hours 49 minutes and 50 seconds.
 
 Twin Cities Marathon

   Fernando Cabada wins Twin Cities Marathon (Star Tribune)
It took Fernando Cabada 20 miles to make his mind up to win the Twin Cities Marathon. He broke away from the pack to win by over one minute in 2 hours, 16 minutes and 32 seconds on a rain filed day.
 
   Olga Glok leads 1-2-3 Russian finish in Twin Cities Marathon women's race (Pioneer Press)
Olga Glok erased a 10-second deficit with 300 meters to go to overtake fellow Russian Silvia Skvortsova and win the women's race at the Twin Cities Marathon on Sunday. Glok, 25, finished in 2 hours, 32 minutes, 27 seconds to beat Skvortsova by 11 seconds. Russians placed first, second, and third in the 2008 marathon event.
 
 Valley Harvest Marathon

   Harvest Marathon attracts top-level competitors (The Advertiser)
Event coordinator Dwayne MacLeod confirmed last week that some high-profile runners have committed to the running in the October 12 marathon. The race will include Alex Coffin, who won this year’s Saint John Marathon by the Sea. Coffin plan's on winning the Harvest Marathon with a new course record. The old record was 2 hours 34 minutes set last year.
 
 West Texas CrossRoads Marathon

   Runners Complete Crossroads Marathon (CBS 7)
The first Boston Qualifying West Texas Crossroads Marathon left the Odessa Church at 7 am on October 4 with runners aiming to earn the trip to the famed Boston Marathon. Race directors called the race a success and proceeds will be donated to local charities.
 
 Wineglass Marathon

   Men's, women's champs repeat in Wineglass Marathon (The Ithaca Journal)
Chris Byler and marathon rookie Bryan Morseman dashed off the starting line in a fog filled morning around 8 am. The two ran the first 20 miles together, but Byler edged ahead by mile 21 and won by 45 seconds with a time of 2 hours, 27 minutes.
