Delude passed Katie Caba with about two miles remaining in the 26.2-mile race when the two passed through Boulevard Park.
 
   Runners Brave Wind, Rain During First Bellingham Bay Marathon (Bellingham Herald)
Erin Delude, a 27-year-old from Bellingham who won the women’s marathon, said the only relief along the 26.2-mile course came in a stretch along the Interurban Trail.

Olympic marathons bear no resemblance to the Chicago Marathon. Olympic marathons are confined to less than 200 elite runners with a maximum qualifying time of two hours and 22 minutes. Olympic marathons have been held without incident in even greater heat and humidity than Sunday's 35,867-person field that included thousands of amateurs.

Beyond the very real challenges posed by the weather, the problems included a communication breakdown between event organizers and competitors, a water shortage that left novices dangerously dehydrated, and a wave of anger among experienced runners over the decision to cancel the event when some were as little as a mile away from the finish line.

Ivuti, competing in only his second major marathon, leaned at the finish line for an unofficial time of 2 hours, 11 minutes, 11 seconds.
 
   One Dead, 250 Hospitalized After Heat-Shortened Chicago Marathon (ABC News)
A Michigan man died while running the Chicago Marathon as stifling heat and humidity forced race organizers to shut down the course midway through the race.

Marathon organizers said they are heeding the warnings. Aid stations will be stocked with more fluids and ice, fire hydrants equipped with mist adapters will be opened along the route and the number of cooling stations and buses will be increased.

   Ivuti Wins Chicago Marathon, Heat Halts Race (Guardian Unlimited)
Ivuti and Gharib were neck-and-neck crossing the finish line in a time of two hours, 11 minutes, 11 seconds, with the winner called several minutes later as the temperature climbed towards 27 degrees Celsius (80 degrees Fahrenheit).
