   Second runner dies completing New York City marathon (The Sudbury Star)
Two of the runners who completed the New York City Marathon passed away after completing the 26.2 mile race. There several people taken to area hospitals for illness and distress. The two deaths were the first in fourteen years at the marathon.

While the New York City Marathon is behind us, many runners are still training for marathons later this fall. The body can undergo changes to the immune system and kidney function which are not beneficial. Even the liver can produce a protein which, if elevated high enough, can incite an inflammatory response that may cause the onset of a heart attack.

Organizers of the Original Mountain Marathon fire back at the media for criticizing their decision to go ahead with the marathon despite severe rain and weather. Any marathon challenges runners to overcome adversity and the weather was just one more challenge that organizers could not predict.

   Santa Clarita Hosts Marathon (KHTS)
Heavy rain did not stop over 3,000 runners from running in Santa Clarita on Sunday. Shane Logan of Pontiac, Michigan, won his first marathon with a time of 2 hours 37 minutes and 48 seconds. Blue Benadum of Malibu was the second place finisher with a time of 2 hours 49 minutes and 1 second.

   Running in the rain? No problem at Santa Clarita Marathon. (The Signal)
Well over 3,000 runners participated in the events surrounding the Santa Clarita Marathon. Patrick Downing said that the sluggish economy probably caused the increase in his number of participants. People who would normally skip state for the larger New York City marathon stayed cool and saved money by running locally.

   Cancer can't keep marathoner from big race (Mercury News)
Tom Kaisersatt crossed the finish line of the Silicon Valley Marathon amidst screaming fans and a wave of golden balloons and yellow t-shirts. Kaisersatt was diagnosed with a rare form of lung cancer in June. He completed the marathon despite a decreased lung capacity which has limited his road running of late.

   Valley Harvest Marathon (Trident News)
The new venue went along with the new route for the 13th annual Valley Harvest Marathon. The course consisted of rolling hills when compared to the relatively flat course in previous years.

   Second win at Auckland Marathon puts New York in the picture (Northern Advocated)
Ady Ngawati won the women's Auckland Marathon for the second year in a row with a time of 2 hours 46 minutes and 43 seconds. After the race Ngawati stated the she may go New York next year with hopes of running under the 2 hour and forty minute mark.

   Last year's runner-up wins this year's Auckland marathon (3 NEWS)
Bumper to bumper traffic crowded Devonport New Zealand as people rushed to the starting line of the Auckland Marathon. With a limit of 7500 entries in the 50th anniversary of the marathon, Tauranga's Ben Ruthe was able to surge past all other competitors for the win.
 
 Bass Pro Shops Marathon

   No Couch Potatoes at Bass Pro Shops Marathon. (News Leader)
Jacob Kandagor of Kenya surged to the finish line of the 2nd annual Bass Pro Shops Marathon. The women's race was won by Amy Pinegar of Springfield. Jeff Galloway and Frank Shorter were on hand to encourage and motivate runners through the 26.2 mile distance.
 
 City of Oaks Marathon

   CIty of Oaks Marathon draws more than 3,000 runners (News Leader)
More than 3,000 runners competed in the 2nd annual City of Oaks Marathon in Raleigh on Sunday. Near perfect race conditions allowed runners to scale the rolling hills and challenging terrain to compete for $23,000 in prize money. The winner took home $1,300 with a time of 2 hours 21 minutes and 38 seconds.

   ItÂ’s too late to enter Kampala marathon! (New Vision)
Organizers at the Kampala Marathon closed registration abruptly when the manageable number of participants reached ten thousand. Registration was extended to allow more than 5,000 runners to send in their registration.
 
 Manchester City Marathon

   Ndaya wins Manchester City Marathon (Union Leader)
Benjamin Ndaya won a five kilometer race earlier in the year after arriving two minutes late for the start. He could have arrived well over ten minutes late to the Manchester City Marathon and still won. His time of 2 hours and 40 minutes was the first U.S. marathon win for the native born Kenyan who lives in Lowell.
 
 Marshall University Marathon

   OSU student wins Marshall University Marathon (Herald Dispatch)
Chris Paulett pulled off the victory at the Marshall University Marathon with a time of 2 hours 38 minutes and 17 seconds. John Van Steenbergh traveled from GA to finish second in 2 hours 48 minutes and 4 seconds. Holly Baker Wong won the women's marathon with a time of 3 hours 12 minutes and 47 seconds.

   Mikitenko named world marathon majors women's champion (Guardian)
Irina Mikitenko of Germany won the World Marathon Majors women's championshop and $500,000 prize money. Mikitenko finished in a points tie with Gete Wami of Ethiopia after the New York City Marathon. Wami, who finished sixth in New York and won the championship last year needed to finish first or second for the outright title. Wami

   Gomes dos Santos keeps the faith, wins marathon (Guardian)
Gomes dos Santos took advantage of a racing error Abderrahim Goumri. Goumri, who finished second in New York last year, started his kick well ahead of the 30 kilometer mark. Gomes dos Santos stayed 7 to 10 seconds behind Goumri and kicked him down in the final mile to win the New York City Marathon in 2 hours 8 minutes and 43 seconds.

Abderrahim Goumri of Morocco was almost assured to the New York City Marathon won on Sunday when he was inching away from Marilson Gomes dos Santos of Brazil after 22 miles. Gomes never lost sight of Goumri and surged passed him in the last mile to put Gourmri in second position for the second straight year.
 
   Fearnley and Radcliffe win New York marathon (Sydney Morning Herald)
Paula Radcliffe won her third New York City marathon in a blowout victory with a time time of 2 hours, 23 minutes 56 seconds. Russian Ludmila Petrova was second in 2 hours 25 minutes and 43 seconds. Kara Goucher finished with the fastest American New York City Marathon time for third place in 2 hours 25 minutes 53 seconds.

   New York City Marathon a greater challenge for some runners (News Day)
Any runner attempting to finish the grueling 26.2 miles of a marathon knows that it is a test of your physiological limit. For many runners the task was monumental. Some runners finished the distance with Parkinson's Disease and even recovering from a fractured pelvic bone.

Daniel Rono feels he has been catapulted to the top of distance running by finishing third in the New York City Marathon with a time of 2 hours 11 minutes and 22 seconds.

   Two Runners Die After Completing New York Marathon (Bloomberg.com)
Two marathon finishers out of the 37,899 participants crossing the line in Central Park did not make it home. The two athletes passed away after crossing the finish line. One of the athletes from Brazil passed away from a heart attack shortly after the race.

   Goumri clings to unfortunate moniker after second-place finish (USA Today)
Abderrahim Goumri seemed to have the New York City Marathon wrapped up as he inched away from Marilson Gomes dos Santos of Brazil just past 22 miles. Gomes dos Santos kept his eye on Goumri and passed him in the last mile to force Gomes dos Santos into second position for the second straight year.
 
 Soweto Marathon

   Lesotho runner dominates Soweto marathon race (China View)
Moeketsi Mosuhli continued the dominant reign of South African runners in the Soweto Marathon when he cross the line at the Elkah Stadium in 2 hours 19 minutes 34 seconds. Mamarolla Tjoka won the women's title in scorching heat and near record temperatures.

   Thousands pound the pavement in Auckland Marathon (New Zealand News Herald)
A record field of runners ran the Auckland Marathon that started near Devonport and finished at Victoria Park in downtown Auckland. Ben Ruthe clocked the winning time for the 26.2 mile race with a time of 2 hours 28 minutes and 11 seconds.
 
 Manchester City Marathon

   Manchester City Marathon is a wide-open race (Union Leader)
Manchester City Marathon defending champions Scott Rowe, Dover,and Kerry Litka, New Hampton, had not signed up for the 26.2 mile race with an increasing field of nearly 2,000 participants. That should leave the field wide open. Durham's Johanna Fickenscher seems to be the clear favorite in the women's race by posting a 1 hour and 23 minute time for the recent Boston Half-Marathon.

   Goumri eyes ascension to New York City marathon throne (Guardian)
While Paula Radcliffe is busy defending her title against rivals in the womens field of the New York City Marathon, the men's defending champion, Martin Lel, will be sidelined with a foot injury. Lel has designated 32-year-old Moroccan Abderrahim Goumri as his successor after Goumri finished second last year.

   New York City Marathon annually lifts spirit of the city (NewsDay)
The death of Ryan Shay, the tragedy of September 11th, and the disaster of Hurricane Katrina have all been the impetus for many runners to run the New York City Marathon. Mary Wittenberg suggested that the 39,000 strong participants in the marathon use the race to celebrate life in the midst of some the biggest tragedies in our country.

   World Anti-Doping officials to test for drugs in MTN Kampala International Marathon (New Vision Online)
The MTN Kampala International Marathon is set for November 23. Race officials have set out to have members of the World Anti-Doping Federation to randomly test the elite athletes. In order to secure international status with the IAAF, random drug test and official course certification are required.

   Providing Toilets for 39,000 Runners in the New York City Marathon (New York Times)
Nearly 300 portable restrooms will adorn central park on Sunday morning for finishers and spectators of the New York City Marathon. Roughly 1,700 of the multi-colored 7 foot waste facilities have been set up at Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island for the start of the 26.2 mile journey.
 
   New York City Marathon Glory Comes With a Price (ABC News)
The 1970 New York City Marathon had only 127 runners and no one mentioned injury. Last year the number of participants reached over 39,000. The injuries the resulted included black toenails, bloody appendages, stomach issues, missing toe nails and slew of other abnormalities that makes many runners pay for their 26.2 miles of glory with some extreme pain.
