While Paul Lekuraa may have won the Athens Marathon hosted in Greece, his victory was overshadowed by a death by a walker in the 10 kilometer race.

   Enicks Wins Third Chickamauga Battlefield Marathon (The Chattanoogan)
With over 551 finishers in the Chickamauga Battlefield Marathon, Hugh Enicks claimed the rights to the top spot on the podium again with a time of 2 hours, 48 minutes and 33 seconds despite hoping for a time of under 2 hours and 40 minutes.

   Ladd wins Harrisburg Marathon (The Patriot News)
From the gun Lowell Ladd lead the the Harrisburg Marathon and won the overall title with a time of 2 hours and 34 minutes. His time was rather impressive considering the full plate of coaching that he maintains.

The Baltimore Marathon drew in a record 17,922 participants which generated twenty-two million for the city of Baltimors' coffers. Well over 49,000 visitors came to the downtown area for the record setting marathon run.

In 1973 Hap Miller quit smoking and put on 25 pounds in the aftermath. He also watched the first Harrisburg Marathon. Two years later, in 1975, he would run his first of 33 Harriburg Marathons and lose the 25 pounds as a result of his running. At age 65 and retired, Miller will again toe the line for his 34th Harrisburg Marathon this weekend.

Arien O'Connell was the big winner after the Nike Women's Marathon in San Francico. Co-winner's were announced after it was discovered that O'Connell did not start with the elite women but had the fastest time over the 26.2 mile course. Reebok has stepped to the plate awarding her new shoes for one year and making a donation to the school where O'Connell works.

   Friendly City marathon back to keep your health right on track (The Herald)
Port Elizabeth is hosting the Friendly City marathon with relaxed race cut-off times of five and one half hours for the 26.2 mile race. In an effort to increase participation and encourage more people to get fit the race organizers have also lengthened the cut-off time for the ten kilometer event and upped the prize money.

The course for the Two Cities Marathon has been billed as flat and fast. The Chickamauga Battlefield Marathon, scheduled for November 8 at 7:30 a.m., will been run through the nation’s oldest military park. The thirty year old race will feature several changes to this year's race. The half marathon has reached a capacity of 700 runners and is closed to new registrants.

Many of the runners in last Sunday's New York City marathon ran for charity, personal health, and a host of other reasons. With over one million fans cheering, not just for one winner, but for everyone, it was one of the largest displays of human generosity. A race of this size makes it apparent why someone would push themselves through their physical limits to complete 26.2 miles.

The United States Track and Field Association has announced that Kara Goucher has been named Athlete of the Week. Goucher was the first woman in fourteen years to grab a top three finish in the New York City Marathon with the fastest debut marathon by a women in a time of 2 hours and 25 minutes.
 
   Running is Bad For Your Heart. Sort Of. (Examiner)
Citing research from Arthur Siege, M.D., director of internal medicine at Harvard’s McLean Hospital, McGrath states the completing the marathon will put a runners body through an "inflammatory storm". Although, the irony is that the training leading up to the 26.2 mile distance has shown to reduce the risk of coronary disease.

Marting Lel was fifth at the Beijing Olympics. However by virtue of two of his marathon victories over the past year he won the World Marathon Major Series and collected his prize of half a million dollars.

   Soweto Marathon a huge success (Mathaba)
Organizers of the Soweto Marathon are excited about the growth of the race. Over two thousand more runners participated in this years race day event than any previous year. A full line up of Lesotho runners took to the podium in the men's race and the women's race.

Two of the runners who completed the New York City Marathon passed away after completing the 26.2 mile race. There several people taken to area hospitals for illness and distress. The two deaths were the first in fourteen years at the marathon.

The body can undergo changes to the immune system and kidney function which are not beneficial.    Santa Clarita Hosts Marathon (KHTS)
Heavy rain did not stop over 3,000 runners from running in Santa Clarita on Sunday. Shane Logan of Pontiac, Michigan, won his first marathon with a time of 2 hours 37 minutes and 48 seconds. Blue Benadum of Malibu was the second place finisher with a time of 2 hours 49 minutes and 1 second.
