Ethiopia's Belainesh Gebre, who entered the Honolulu on her own after not receiving an elite status invite, was declared the winner of the women's race after the defending champion Svetlana Zakharova filed a protest as Gebre had shared energy drinks with boyfriend Ezkyas Sisay throughout the race. Judges deemed the actions acceptable as Gebre was not allowed to have energy drinks designated for the top invited women.
