With one month to go, a few of the world's top elite runners including Haile Gebrselassie and Lornah Kipligat, along with around 10,000 participants are getting ready for the 2008 Dubai Marathon. Race officials and sponsors have prepared an entertainment filled event hoping to generate a community spirit among the residents of Dubai. The race offers a 10km race and a 4km charity fun run for all ages.

A runner who’s been running doesn’t need much time to maintain his performance, but the training needs to be almost like racing.

   Indian Open Marathon set for December 23, 2007 (India Times)
The Indian Open Marathon, the first event on the route to be used for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, will host national elites Sunita Rani and Sunita Godra. The route is exactly the same except that the Games race will start from a stadium. The organisers are expecting around 2000 participants for the race.
 
 Taipei International Expressway Marathon

   African runners win ING Taipei International Marathon titles (China Post)
Kenya's Hillary Bett, a farmer and amateur runner, edged out Tanzania's Disdery Hombo and fellow Kenyan, Elijah Chemwolo, to win the men's race at the 2007 Taipei Marathon in 2:17:09. In the women's race Tabitha Tsatsa from Zimbabwe won in a 2:33:01. Race day included races of multiple distances along with the marathon and drew a record number of participants. 22,000 for the marathon and 110,000 for all the events which included a 21 km half-marathon, 9 km road run, 3 km fun run and 1 km run for children.

Kenyan Samuel Wanjiru, winner of the 2007 Fukuoka Marathon set a course record as well as second fastest marathon debut with a 2:06:39. No stranger to setting records, Wanjiru holds the two fastest half marathon times in the world. With his quick progression of career successes, Wanjiru has been setting goals and achieving them from setting the world records in the half to making a 2:06 marathon debut.

   50-Year-Old Marathoner Seizes Dong-A Marathoners Best Runner’s Award (Donga.com)
Fifty-year old Kim Yeong-guk was awarded the Best Runner's Award in the Dong-A Marathoners Award Ceremony. Dong-A Ilbo, the sponsor of Seoul International Marathon in March, and the HiSeoul, Baekje Keungil and Gyeongju International marathons in the fall have chosen Kim from a group of eight finalists based on their record over a full race. In 2007 Kim had finish times of 2:47:25 at the Seoul International Marathon and finished in 2:27:10 at the Gyeongju International Marathon.

   All Marathon Times From The Honolulu Marathon To Be Reviewed (Honolulu Star-Bulletin)
Honolulu Marathon Officials are taking on the task of analyzing video footage of 24,300 marathon finishes at the 2007 Honolulu Marathon due to timing result problems from the new electronic timing system. The race is implementing a system to review the video and compare the times with SAI’s database. Race officials have also announced that they are not going to use SAI timing in 2008.

Honolulu Marathon organizers have determined that all results recorded for the 2007 Honolulu Marathon appear to be off by from 7 to 70 seconds. Oranizers will review each and every finish using videos of the finish line. They estimate the process will take 800 hours to complete.

   Big Response for the Bangalore Marathon (The Hindu)
The 2007 Bangalore International Marathon is growing in numbers. As the third year of the event approaches, race officials have extended registration until the day before the race. With race registration already topping 7,050, race officials are also excited by the numbers of international racers from Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Morocco, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Indonesia. Kenya’s Maku Nzioka, Ngira Nyaga and Sua Matisya are the favorites i nthe elite line-up.

Top marathoner South African Hendrick Ramaala will be one of the elite runners to highlight the 2008 London Marathon Field. While many runners are sitting out of spring marathon season and preparing for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, other elites headlining the field are former world record holder Paul Tergat, Martin Lel, Felix Limo, Meb Keflezighi, Stefano Baldini , Jaouad Gharib and Abderrahim Goumri.

   Chinese Runners Hit With Bib Fine (China Daily)
Four elite Chinese marathon runners fined by the China Athletics Association for obscuring sponsor logos on their race bibs at the 2007 Beijing International Marathon. The four athletes include Ren Longyun, runner-up in the men's race, Sun Wei, tenth in men's and Zhang Yingying and Bai Xue, runner-up and second runner-up on the women's side, respectively.

   Post Mortem: Ted Corbitt, Pioneer of Distance Running (Washington Post)
On December 12, 2007, Ted Corbitt, 88, a distance runner who introduced ultramarathon races to the United States passed away. As one of the few elite African American distance runners of his time, Corbitt pioneered the sport of distance running by founding the Road Runners Club of America and heading the New York Road Runners Club of America despite discrimination he encountered at the time. From track star to World War II veteran to Olympian to physical therapist/nutritionist, Corbitt was a runner whom despite an asthma condition completed an ultramarathon by walking 68 miles in 24 hours in 2003.

Four of the five World Marathon Majors races have seen the highest number of participants ever. With the 2007 New York City Marathon topping the numbers with 38,607 finishers.

   White Rock Marathon organizers, WFAA officials acknowledge problems at finish line. (Dallas Morning News)
TV cameras and communication failures had sports commentators winging it for the finish of the Dallas White Rock Marathon. The elite men would finish at the half marathon finish line and few cameras caught the action. The chaos went on for nearly 20 minutes.
 
 Rockford Marathon

   Rockford Marathon to Benefit Community Foundation Program (NBC - Rockford, IL)
Following a twenty-year hiatus, Rockford, IL, will be staging a marathon event on May 18, 2008. President Gloria Lundin states that all proceeds will benefit the local community and the Community Foundation's Community Needs Fund. The race expects 2,500 entrants.

   Seton signs on again for AT&T Austin marathon (Austin Business Journal)
Seton Family of Hospitals signed on as the 2008 AT&T Austin Marathon. The group of hospitals will provide medical support and 200 volunteers for the February 17th race in Austin.

   Michigan Company's System Goofs Up At Honolulu Marathon (MLive.com)
The missing time of roughly 3,000 runners at the Honolulu Marathon was due to glitches in the timing system of Michigan-based SAI Timing and Tracking.
 
   Improper use of timing device foiled Marathon (The Honolulu Advertiser)
The Honolulu Marathon's race organizers delve deeper into runner timing issues at the thirty fifth marathon. Investigations have led mmarathon officials to believe that the heavy showers that short-circuited generators connected to remote chip-readers caused most of the problems, but Honolulu Marathon Association president Jim Barahal and David Simms, co-founder of SAI Timing and Tracking (the company contracted to handle timing of the race) stated that many runners may not have been tracked due to improperly fastening the timing transponder to their shoes. From 2000 to 2006, the Honolulu Marathon used ChampionChip plastic discs, for 2007 the new device is a small paper timing strip to be attached to their shoes.

   Houston Marathon officials opt against new timing system (Houston Chronicle)
After the new SAI timing system was introduced at the Honolulu system it failed to record nearly 3,000 runners finish times. Organizers at the Houston marathon have acted quickly to move away from this timing system for the January marathon. They will stick with CHAMPIONCHIP as they have since teaming up with the chip timing system since 2000.
 
 Mississippi Blues Marathon

   Governor Barbour hopes to run in Mississippi Blues Marathon in Jan. (The Clarion Ledger)
Gov. Haley Barbour says he plans to support the "Let's Go Walking - Mississippi" Campaign by participating in the Mississippi Blues Marathon on January 5th in the capital of Jackson. The prize purse is set at 30,000 dollars for the top finishers.

   Distance running inspiration Ted Corbitt passes away at 88 (IAAF)
Ted Corbitt, a distance running legend, first President of the Road Runners Club of America and third President of the New York Road Runners Club, Ted passed away at the age of 88. Corbitt debuted at the marathon at age 32 with a 15th place finish in the 1951 Boston Marathon and two marathons later was selected for the 1952 US Olympic team. With a running career which lasted into his fifties, Corbitt ran just under 200 marathons and ultra marathon races.

   Indian Marathon Loses Appeal: Fatter Purse Yet To Translate into More Runners (India Express)
Despite doubling the prize purse for the winners of the Mwana Sugars Indian Marathon only 200 runners have registered for the December 23 race. The popular Rath Marathon from a decade ago was revived in 2006 and has not caught on with the local running community.
