 Buller Marathon

   Buller Marathon win comes as surprise (The Nelson Mail)
Simon Madron ran an impressive negative split at the Buller Marathon to outlast Christchurch's Martin Lukes who finished second in 2hr 38min 43sec. Blenheim's Ian Thomas was third in 2hr 46min 45sec. For Madron, his time was an 11 minute personal record and his second half split of one hour and sixteen minutes nearly rivaled that of his fastest half of one hour, fifteen minutes and 43 seconds.
 
 Chennai Marathon

   Despite low numbers, Chennai Marathon has its moments of success, disappointment and camaraderie. (The Hindu)
In previous years the Chennai Marathon has seen numbers near 30,000 for the days events. This year only 4,100 showed up for the races with fewer than 100 in the marathon. Even the weather was considered perfect. Event organizers blamed the late notice publicity and the February billing for the decreased numbers.

   Athlete Makes U.S. Trials in Last Ditch Effort (Race Results Weekly)
The winner of the 2008 Walt Disney World Marathon Melanie Peters who failed to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Women's Marathon wouldn't let it discourage her. Twenty-eight days later she ran the Gasparilla Distance Classic Marathon and finished fifth in a 2:46:45, making the Trials qualifying time. Although Peters was taken to the medical area in a wheelchair, she is looking forward to the trials in April.

   Steady As He Goes, Gilbert Kiptoo Wins Mercedes Marathon (Everything Alabama)
Gilbert Kiptoo went on to win the 2008 Mercedes Marathon even though Andy Martin raced out to an early lead.

 Surfside Beach Marathon
  Post-Race Review/ Results
   Age not a winning factor at beach marathon (The Galveston County Daily News)
The top three spots at the Surf City Marathon were earned by masters runners. Rick Autrey, 46, winning in three hours, 10 minutes and 46 seconds was followed closely by Canadian Ed Bickley, 49, who finished in 3:12:22. Last year’s masters champion, Ed Sturdivant of Missouri took third place honors. The womens winner won her debut marathon at Surf City proving that experience may not be necessary.

The warmer than normal weather conditions did not slow down Rick Autry, 46, of Nacogdoches. He finished first in the male marathon competition in 3:03:10, 13:45 faster than he finished last year’s race. Autry who has been training and running ultra's to prepare for this years race seemed to enjoy the warmer conditions along the beach.

   More than 13,000 runners will take part in marathon (News 8 Austin)
A record number of over 13,000 athletes will be participating in the 2008 Austin Marathon Race Weekend. Touted as the first green marathon in the nation, the Austin Marathon with its large number of entrants stands to be the tenth largest in the nation.

   Nathuram bags full marathon (The Newindpress)
Nathuram of Madras Regimental Camp, Wellington won The Hero Ultra Chennai Marathon in two hours and forty minutes. The race was organized to help promote a greener and pollution-free Chennai. Nearly 4500 participants ran for the cause.
 
 Indianapolis Monumental Marathon

   New Indianapolis Marathon planned for November (Indy Star)
Indianapolis is going to try to pull it off again. This time with a prize purse of $10,800 dollars and a benefactor with the Marion County schools. The race director Ken Long is claiming to not be affiliated with the ill-fated Indy race from last fall that was delayed and then canceled much to the disappointment of thousands.
 
 London Marathon

   Grandmother rises early for marathon run (Hampshire News)
Grandmother Linda Hilson, 59, who completed the 2007 London Marathon gears up for another marathon challenge. Hilson who gets a great buzz out of running, will run for Children with Leukaemia charity. Hilson trains at 6:30 a.m. every morning.

   Sun Shines In Birmingham for Mercedes Marathon (Birmingham News)
The sun shone on the town of Birmingham just in time for the 2008 edition of the Mercedes Marathon. The course was well stocked with aide stations and hundreds of volunteers. The post race party was held at Boutwell Auditorium.

   Myrtle Beach marathon one week away (South Carolina Now)
The course organizers finished going over the course and arrived at the finish line at Pelicans Field in Myrtle Beach where nearly 11,000 people will finish in just under 7 days. In it's 11th year the marathon has grown significantly since its debut in 1998. The kids run has been a popular addition and looks to add to the excitement of the day.

   Runners from Lesotho and Namibia head home hopes in South African Marathon champs (IAAF)
The South African Marathon Championships were held Sunday. Mabuthile Lebopo and Namibia Beata Naigambo took first place in the men's and women's race respectively. The race was also used by South African authorities as the Olympic Trials for Beijing in 2008.

   World champion Kibet still traumatised by mob attack (Guardian Limited)
As post-election violence continues, Kenya's world marathon champion Luke Kibet is still traumatized from last month's attack that nearly cost him his life. Trying to focus on running the 2008 London Marathon has been tough due to the dangers he faces while training in the early mornings and evenings.
 
   Gilligan to take Moreno to his Island (The monitor)
Thom Gilligan of Marathon Tours, based out of Boston, will take Francisco Moreno to his last marathon run of the 7 continents. He will join a list of less than 200 individuals who have run a marathon in all 7 continents. Moreno has been raising funds for United For Sight of South Texas. His trip to the island continent of Antarctica on a Russian Research vessel will complete the voyage.
 
   English Teacher to Finish Stay with Marathon Effort (Tapei Times)
Neil O'Maonaigh-Lennon has been teaching English in Taiwan. Rather than vacate the country immediately after his contract expires in February Lennon plans on running a marathon for 30 days in a row. He will run 42km per day with the money he is raising from sponsorship going to cancer research and a local group for disabled people. B
 
 The Sedona Marathon

   Locals win Sedona Marathon (Sedona Biz)
Joseph Fuss was the winner for the second year in the men's full 2008 Sedona Marathon. His time of three hours and three minutes was nearly 8 minutes off of his winning time of two hours and fifty-five minutes last year. Fellow Sedona resident, Sherry Kristoff, came in first in the women's full marathon with a time of three hours and nine minutes.

The Esplanade Association has been chosen as the only environmental charity for the 2008 Boston Marathon. The association describes itself as a nonprofit collaboration of citizens working to protect, restore, and enhance Boston’s historic Charles River Esplanade.

   Peters Takes Gasparilla Women's Marathon (Tampa Bay Online)
Missing the U.S. Olympic Women's Marathon Trials by just 29 seconds at last month's Disney Marathon, St. Petersburg's Melanie Peters is preparing for the 2008 Gasparilla Marathon. The U.S. women's B qualifying time is 2:47. Peters, a 24-year-old Michigan native, crossed the finish line of Sunday's race with fifteen seconds to spare.

   Hitting the Wall, literally at the Great Wall Marathon (Reuters)
In any marathon race you can hit the "wall". In China's Great Wall Marathon you may get to experience hitting the wall twice. Just over 4 hours from the pollution plagued Beijing, 2008 Olympic host city, the Great Wall marathon is considered tough but beautiful and very arid. Visitors can run the 5 kilometer, 10 kilometer, half and full marathon while trudging the 3,700 steps that line the course.

   MOC against Moyo’s US Marathon (The Daily Times)
The Athletics Commission of Malawi Olympic Committee (MOC) expressed reservations for the country’s top long distance runner, Henry Moyo, to run in the 2008 Austin Marathon having completed another marathon less than three months prior. The rules state that an athlete should not compete until after a three month rest period, but many in the commission feel his withdrawal from the race to be a waste of money. Moyo ran the 2007 Nelson Mandela Heroes International Marathon in December.

With only a few days left before the Myrtle Beach Marathon, a group of experience runners offer there advice on last minute preparations. Reg Horn and his wife,Delores, are 50 state marathon runners with 118 marathons under their belt. These two along with Randy Melko, who has run over 20 marathons, and Shaun Walsh, president of the Bi-Lo Myrtle Beach Marathon each offered their input for a great race.

   Carlson Wins Gate River Run (News4Jax)
Five-time women's 15K champion Deena Kastor, the No. 1 seed at the 2008 Gate River Run, quickly distanced herself from the women's field which is given a five minute head start in what race officials call the equalizer. Carlson, 25, passed Kastor coming down the Hart Bridge ramp, crossing the finish line in Jacksonville Municipal Stadium at 44:11. Kastor finished in a 44:35. Kastor and others dedicated their run Saturday to Ryan Shay, the 2005 Gate River Run champion who died tragically in November during the Olympic marathon trials in New York City.

   Students run marathon, one lap at a time (The Tribune)
Out of Colorado comes the fitness challenge for kids. Platte Valley Elementary school students in fourth and fifth grade will run a marathon thanks to the efforts of Kelly Rowe. Her students, approximately 180, will run a marathon over the next 3 months. The 20 laps a day are being done to educate the children about fitness and health. Definitely a "step" in the right direction for these soon to be fit youngsters.

   Kenya secures swift but exceptionally tight doubles at the RAK Half (IAAF)
The 2008 Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon saw close finishes in both the men and women's races. Kenyan Patrick Makau Musyoki won the men's race in 59:35 edging out Ethiopian Tsegaye Kebede in a photo finish. Although this wasn't a personal best for the third fastest half marathoner in the world, this is Makau's fifth sub sixty minute half marathon finish within twelve months. In the women's race Kenyan Salina Kosgei outsprinted fellow Kenyan Pamela Chepchumba and the Ethiopian Atsede Habtamu in close race that all three finished in 72:27.

   500 Marathons by 2012 (Cotswald Chatterblog)
Steve Edwards of Great Britain is aiming to run 500 marathons by 2012 in sub 3:20 to raise awareness for the Spinal Injuries Association (SIA) and their charity which supports the 40,000 people in the country who are paralyzed through spinal cord injury. Edwards has set world records before. In 1990 he became the youngest person to run one hundred marathons and in 1992 he broke the world record for running the most marathons run in a single year - eighty seven with an average finishing time of 3:14. Planning to retire at fifty once he reaches five hundred, he has currently completed 447 marathons at an average time of 3:18.

   All Work and No Play Slows China's Olympians (Times Online)
Much pressure is on the Chinese Olympic team who home country is hosting the 2008 Beijing Games. The Chinese have been hiring top western coaches and pushing their athletes especially hard telling them "a silver medal is like fourteenth place". The fastest-growing Olympic force since East Germany, the Chinese team won thirty two medals at the 2004 Olympics, a surprise having never won a gold medal before 1984.

Despite different goals for running the 26.2 miles, marathoners share a commonality, their willingness to push the limits. The 2008 Tallahassee Marathon saw a record crowd of more than two hundred participants including runners from out-of-state and abroad.
