   Countdown to the Myrtle Beach Marathon (The Sun News)
With only a few days left before the Myrtle Beach Marathon, a group of experience runners offer there advice on last minute preparations. Reg Horn and his wife,Delores, are 50 state marathon runners with 118 marathons under their belt. These two along with Randy Melko, who has run over 20 marathons, and Shaun Walsh, president of the Bi-Lo Myrtle Beach Marathon each offered their input for a great race.

   Endurance training improves metabolism in mice (Medical Research News)
Following a discovery that skeletal muscle consists of two types of fibers, researchers from the Boston University School of Medicine have demonstrated that in mice, the use of barbells may be as important to losing weight and improving health as the use of running shoes. Running increases the amount of type I muscle fibers, while resistance training such as weightlifting increases type II muscle fibers. Type II muscle fibers are for more than lifting, they control whole body metabolism which results in development of obesity and diabetes with the loss of Type II muscle fibers through the aging process.
 
   Air pollution a concern in Beijing (CTV.ca)
With the 2008 Olympic Games six months away, dozens of countries concerned about the air quality in China are setting up pre-Olympic training camps in Japan or South Korea. IOC states that there are a number of contingency plans outlined. No one disputes the grandeur of the venues and Beijing's astounding $40 billion facelift, which includes new roads, subway lines and a myriad of skyscrapers. The $200 million National Aquatics Center, known as the Water Cube, opened last week to rave reviews.

Despite years of Vitamin C being touted as a preventive measure against the common cold, studies from several large-scale trials have not reduced incidence of the common cold in humans or influenza in animals. Vitamin C can boost the immune system slightly. those who may benefit the most are those involved in strenuous, prolonged exercise. Vitamin C supplementation may be beneficial in reducing the incidence or severity of upper respiratory infection following the exercise.
 
   Avoiding cold-weather injuries (CBC News)
With colder winter conditions, the best way to prevent illness and injuries may be found in the following ways - layer your clothing properly, protect your extremities, finding a good surface to run, remember to hydrate and avoid speed work in the cold. In the winter it takes longer for the muscles to warm up in the cold weather.

   Olympic athletes look for a solution to Beijing's pollution (International Herald Tribune)
Athletes at the 2008 Beijing Games may have to run as they never have before - in face masks due to the poor air quality of smog filled Beijing. Several American officials have said their athletes would not compete wearing masks, which would embarrass the host Chinese. A few elite athletes visited Beijing last week to inspect the facilities and do promotions for Adidas, a major Olympic sponsor. Of the athletes, Haile Gebrselassie who is concerned about the pollution will be training outside China and make his decision whether he will or will not run the marathon over the next two months.

   New Indianapolis Marathon planned for November (Indy Star)
Indianapolis is going to try to pull it off again. This time with a prize purse of $10,800 dollars and a benefactor with the Marion County schools. The race director Ken Long is claiming to not be affiliated with the ill-fated Indy race from last fall that was delayed and then canceled much to the disappointment of thousands.

A record number of over 13,000 athletes will be participating in the 2008 Austin Marathon Race Weekend. Touted as the first green marathon in the nation, the Austin Marathon with its large number of entrants stands to be the tenth largest in the nation.

   Peters Takes Gasparilla Women's Marathon (Tampa Bay Online)
Missing the U.S. Olympic Women's Marathon Trials by just 29 seconds at last month's Disney Marathon, St. Petersburg's Melanie Peters is preparing for the 2008 Gasparilla Marathon. The U.S. women's B qualifying time is 2:47. Peters, a 24-year-old Michigan native, crossed the finish line of Sunday's race with fifteen seconds to spare.

   All Work and No Play Slows China's Olympians (Times Online)
Much pressure is on the Chinese Olympic team who home country is hosting the 2008 Beijing Games. The Chinese have been hiring top western coaches and pushing their athletes especially hard telling them "a silver medal is like fourteenth place". The fastest-growing Olympic force since East Germany, the Chinese team won thirty two medals at the 2004 Olympics, a surprise having never won a gold medal before 1984.

   MOC against Moyo’s US Marathon (The Daily Times)
The Athletics Commission of Malawi Olympic Committee (MOC) expressed reservations for the country’s top long distance runner, Henry Moyo, to run in the 2008 Austin Marathon having completed another marathon less than three months prior. The rules state that an athlete should not compete until after a three month rest period, but many in the commission feel his withdrawal from the race to be a waste of money. Moyo ran the 2007 Nelson Mandela Heroes International Marathon in December.

The 2008 Nedbank Durban Marathon is hosting the South African championships and a qualifier for the Beijing Olympics. Defending champions Poppy Mlambo and Bethuel Netshifhlefhe who are convinced they can set career best performances will be challenged by Dimakatso Menong and Eunice Nhlapo.

   Angwin man prepares for Tokyo marathon (St. Helena Star)
Jeff Veness and his niece applied for two of the 25,000 available slots for the February 17th Tokyo Marathon. By August well over 150,000 had applied for the most watched sporting event in Tokyo. The race could have seen nearly 250,000 registrants if they had left registration open. Veness will leave this weekend for the long trip.

   Wanjiru Predicts London Trial (Sporting Life)
Sammy Wanjiru is betting the Flora London Marathon is the race that will attract the eyes of the Kenyan selection team for the Beijing Olympic games. Wanjiru hopes the competition and the rivalry in London along with his performance and the faster overall times will earn him a spot in Beijing. His race on the 13 of April may be over shadowed only by the Boston Marathon eight days later. On Patriots Day in Boston Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot will try to run down his fourth Boston title and earn his own Olympic Birth.

43-year old mother of two Colleen De Reuck may be better known for her running resume which includes four Olympic Games, bronze medal in the World Cross Country Championships, a few world road bests and scores of road race victories. De Reuck who is in training for the 2008 US Olympic Women's Marathon Team Trials will test her mettle at the 2008 USA Cross Country Championships. De Reuck, the defending U.S. Olympic marathon trials champion, will be forty-four at the starting line for the Trials.

   Durban Marathon Could Be Doorway to Olympics (SABCnews)
The 2008 Nedbank Durban City Marathon will be the qualifying event for the 2008 Beijing Olympics for South African long distance Olympic hopefuls. The top three male athletes will have automatic qualification if they finish under 2:12. The top three women will qualify if their times are under 2:36.

   Gebrselassie still concerned about Beijing smog (Guardian Unlimited)
World Record Holder Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia will decide in the next two months whether he will run the marathon event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Gebrselassie who suffers from respiratory issues fears that Beijing's air pollution will damage his health. He will most likely run the 10,000 meters as an alternative.

   Athlete Makes U.S. Trials in Last Ditch Effort (Race Results Weekly)
The winner of the 2008 Walt Disney World Marathon Melanie Peters who failed to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Women's Marathon wouldn't let it discourage her. Twenty-eight days later she ran the Gasparilla Distance Classic Marathon and finished fifth in a 2:46:45, making the Trials qualifying time. Although Peters was taken to the medical area in a wheelchair, she is looking forward to the trials in April.

   Buller Marathon win comes as surprise (The Nelson Mail)
Simon Madron ran an impressive negative split at the Buller Marathon to outlast Christchurch's Martin Lukes who finished second in 2hr 38min 43sec. Blenheim's Ian Thomas was third in 2hr 46min 45sec. For Madron, his time was an 11 minute personal record and his second half split of one hour and sixteen minutes nearly rivaled that of his fastest half of one hour, fifteen minutes and 43 seconds.

   Despite low numbers, Chennai Marathon has its moments of success, disappointment and camaraderie. (The Hindu)
In previous years the Chennai Marathon has seen numbers near 30,000 for the days events. This year only 4,100 showed up for the races with fewer than 100 in the marathon. Even the weather was considered perfect. Event organizers blamed the late notice publicity and the February billing for the decreased numbers.

 Surfside Beach Marathon

   Hundreds of local runners hit the beach at Surfside Beach Marathon. (The Facts)
The warmer than normal weather conditions did not slow down Rick Autry, 46, of Nacogdoches. He finished first in the male marathon competition in 3:03:10, 13:45 faster than he finished last year’s race. Autry who has been training and running ultra's to prepare for this years race seemed to enjoy the warmer conditions along the beach.
 
   Age not a winning factor at beach marathon (The Galveston County Daily News)
The top three spots at the Surf City Marathon were earned by masters runners. Rick Autrey, 46, winning in three hours, 10 minutes and 46 seconds was followed closely by Canadian Ed Bickley, 49, who finished in 3:12:22. Last year’s masters champion, Ed Sturdivant of Missouri took third place honors. The womens winner won her debut marathon at Surf City proving that experience may not be necessary.

   Runners from Lesotho and Namibia head home hopes in South African Marathon champs (IAAF)
The South African Marathon Championships were held Sunday. Mabuthile Lebopo and Namibia Beata Naigambo took first place in the men's and women's race respectively. The race was also used by South African authorities as the Olympic Trials for Beijing in 2008.

   Locals win Sedona Marathon (Sedona Biz)
Joseph Fuss was the winner for the second year in the men's full 2008 Sedona Marathon. His time of three hours and three minutes was nearly 8 minutes off of his winning time of two hours and fifty-five minutes last year. Fellow Sedona resident, Sherry Kristoff, came in first in the women's full marathon with a time of three hours and nine minutes.
 
 Chennai Marathon

   Nathuram bags full marathon (The Newindpress)
Nathuram of Madras Regimental Camp, Wellington won The Hero Ultra Chennai Marathon in two hours and forty minutes. The race was organized to help promote a greener and pollution-free Chennai. Nearly 4500 participants ran for the cause.
