A record number of over 13,000 athletes will be participating in the 2008 Austin Marathon Race Weekend. Touted as the first green marathon in the nation, the Austin Marathon with its large number of entrants stands to be the tenth largest in the nation.

   How the Boston Marathon changed the world! (Scene)
Most people understand that men and women run marathons. However, in 1967, the Boston marathon was considered exclusively male. Females were, at that time, not considered able to run such great distances. Enter K. Switzer. Kathrine Switzer was given a race number as race organizers did not realize she was a woman. Her first initial allowed her to escape the scrutiny of race officials until the race began. Switzer along with women's cycling star Sarah Ulmer will run Motatapu Icebreaker marathon on March 8.

   John Hancock Financial Announces World's Top Women to Run 2008 Boston Marathon (Earth Times)
The 23rd Boston Marathon with John Hancock as the title sponsor will pit some of the leading women in the world against defending champion Lidiya Grigoryeva. 2006 winner Rita Jeptoo, two-time runner-up Jelena Prokopcuka and a new generation of international talent, including Askale Tafa Magarsa and Dire Tune, both of Ethiopia, will arrive at Hopkinton to challenge all comers and the hills to Boston.

The 2008 Boston Marathon women's race will include defending champion Lidiya Grigoryeva, Rita Jeptoo and Jelena Prokopcuka. Prokopcuka who has been runner up in 2006 and 2007 will be formidable competition. Ethiopians Askale Tafa Magarsa and Dire Tune who are rising stars will be competing at Boston for the first time.

   Boston Marathon boss Guy Morse injured in fall (Boston Herald)
Guy Morse, the executive director of the Boston Athletic Association and one of the top officials of the Boston Marathon, was injured in a fall, requiring bilateral quadriceps surgery on to repair ruptured tendons in both legs. Morse has been in treatment for prostate cancer. Although he will require several weeks of rehabilitation, Morse will continue working during his rehab.

   Father and son running Boston Marathon for health (The Vangaurd)
The father son duo from Nova Scotia will be running the B.A.A. Boston Marathon to raise 26,000 dollars for the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation’s new endowment program. Adlai Cunningham,Newellton, Cape Sable Island, his son Kerry, living in Toronto, will be running the marathon on April 21. Cunningham realized it was important after a brain aneurism nearly took his life last year.

   Buller Marathon win comes as surprise (The Nelson Mail)
Simon Madron ran an impressive negative split at the Buller Marathon to outlast Christchurch's Martin Lukes who finished second in 2hr 38min 43sec. Blenheim's Ian Thomas was third in 2hr 46min 45sec. For Madron, his time was an 11 minute personal record and his second half split of one hour and sixteen minutes nearly rivaled that of his fastest half of one hour, fifteen minutes and 43 seconds.

   Despite low numbers, Chennai Marathon has its moments of success, disappointment and camaraderie. (The Hindu)
In previous years the Chennai Marathon has seen numbers near 30,000 for the days events. This year only 4,100 showed up for the races with fewer than 100 in the marathon. Even the weather was considered perfect. Event organizers blamed the late notice publicity and the February billing for the decreased numbers.

   Nathuram bags full marathon (The Newindpress)
Nathuram of Madras Regimental Camp, Wellington won The Hero Ultra Chennai Marathon in two hours and forty minutes. The race was organized to help promote a greener and pollution-free Chennai. Nearly 4500 participants ran for the cause.

As the twenty-third running of the Los Angeles Marathon approaches, rumors are circling that Falconhead Capital is planning to purchase the race. Falconhead is the private equity firm that recently acquired Elite Racing as well as Competitor Magazine creating the entity Competitor Inc. The race currently owned by Devine Racing has been plagued by problems for quite some time.

   Athlete Makes U.S. Trials in Last Ditch Effort (Race Results Weekly)
The winner of the 2008 Walt Disney World Marathon Melanie Peters who failed to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Women's Marathon wouldn't let it discourage her. Twenty-eight days later she ran the Gasparilla Distance Classic Marathon and finished fifth in a 2:46:45, making the Trials qualifying time. Although Peters was taken to the medical area in a wheelchair, she is looking forward to the trials in April.

   Peters Takes Gasparilla Women's Marathon (Tampa Bay Online)
Missing the U.S. Olympic Women's Marathon Trials by just 29 seconds at last month's Disney Marathon, St. Petersburg's Melanie Peters is preparing for the 2008 Gasparilla Marathon. The U.S. women's B qualifying time is 2:47. Peters, a 24-year-old Michigan native, crossed the finish line of Sunday's race with fifteen seconds to spare.

With 10,000 runners entered in the field of the Georgia marathon the race should fill to capacity. Only 5,000 spots remain for the March, 30th race. Race organizers have secured last years marathon champions Joseph Chirlee and Valentina Levushkina. 80% of those who have registered are from the Peach State.

In any marathon race you can hit the "wall". In China's Great Wall Marathon you may get to experience hitting the wall twice. Just over 4 hours from the pollution plagued Beijing, 2008 Olympic host city, the Great Wall marathon is considered tough but beautiful and very arid. Visitors can run the 5 kilometer, 10 kilometer, half and full marathon while trudging the 3,700 steps that line the course.

   MOC against Moyo’s US Marathon (The Daily Times)
The Athletics Commission of Malawi Olympic Committee (MOC) expressed reservations for the country’s top long distance runner, Henry Moyo, to run in the 2008 Austin Marathon having completed another marathon less than three months prior. The rules state that an athlete should not compete until after a three month rest period, but many in the commission feel his withdrawal from the race to be a waste of money. Moyo ran the 2007 Nelson Mandela Heroes International Marathon in December.

   New Indianapolis Marathon planned for November (Indy Star)
Indianapolis is going to try to pull it off again. This time with a prize purse of $10,800 dollars and a benefactor with the Marion County schools. The race director Ken Long is claiming to not be affiliated with the ill-fated Indy race from last fall that was delayed and then canceled much to the disappointment of thousands.

   Tanzania: 2008 Kilimanjaro Marathon Registers Bumper Field (All Africa)
Kilimanjaro international marathon has roughly 400 international runners for the March 2nd race. Foreign countries have clamored to enter the mountainous race. The United Kingdom and Australia have 45 and 18 entries, respectively. The U.S. will be sending 61 runners to attempt to complete the task.

   Rugby's Prescott to make marathon effort at London (Sky Sports)
Prescott, a rugby full back, raised over £70,000 four months ago when he completed a 200-mile charity walk. He hopes to raise a much larger amount for the hospital in Manchester,Christies, where he is being treated for a rare form of stomach cancer. The monumental task of spreading awareness of the disease, training for the race and undergoing treatments is simply another challenge for Prescott.

Angela Spatz, a senior vet surgeon, will run the Flora London Marathon to raise money for the PDSA pet hospital which cares for well over 300,000 animals each year. The Myrtle Beach Marathon is expressing to all runners that the no headphone rule will be in effect this weekend just as it has been for the previous 10 years of racing. Safety concerns have always been the major reason for the rule. Runners need to hear what is going on around them to avoid accidents and injury. The ruling comes as no surprise to most avid runners who have encountered the running stipulation in all USATF sanctioned races.
