 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Men's Marathon

   Keflezighi's Gold Chase a Marathon (Washington Times)
Many believed that Olympian silver medalist Meb Keflezighi would be a sure bet for the 2008 US Olympic Marathon Team, but some things don't work out as planned. After having a few seasons battling with food poisoning and injuries, Keflezighi had calf pains at miles 15-16 of the 2008 Olympic Trials hurting his performance and costing him his spot on the team. Although not discouraged, Keflezighi looks forward to July 2008 where he will attempt to make the US Olympic team in the 10,000 meters.

   Thousands join Kolkata Marathon, Lone wins (The Hindu)
The 2008 Kolkata Marathon had 20,000 participants in the running festivities and one winner, Bhairon Singh Lone who finished in 2:20:53. Angad Kumar was runner-up in a 2:21:39 and Bipul Sharma was third in a 2:24. The women's race was a 10.5 km run.

   Tale of the tape is more reliable than BMI (Ottawa Citizen)
Body Mass Indicators (BMI) used to be the standard by which to check fitness levels, but studies show that the best method may be a good old-fashioned tape measure. BMI doesn't take into account someone who's training and whose muscle mass is greater than the average person and since muscle weighs more than fat, the results are inconclusive. By measuring waist circumference (the distance between the top of your hipbone and the bottom of your ribcage) one will get a more accurate gauge.
 
   WADA rethink hormone test (Telegraph UK)
Professor Peter Sonksen who has invented a blood test to detect artificial human growth hormone in athletes has been called upon to discuss the validation process required for his tests to be used at Beijing Olympics. In the wake of various doping scandals coming to light, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) plans to crack down on doping. Sonksen had perfected his test for HGH for the 2000 Sydney Olympics only to have his funding withdrawn by the International Olympic Committee and his work sidelined by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) in favour of an alternative test; but WADA is revisiting his findings.

   Marathon Runners in Peril (Daily News Transcript)
Moses Tanui of Kenyan running fame has been unreachable on his cell phone. Fred Treseler has tried for two weeks to reach the world class athlete living in the volatile area of Eldoret Kenya. Lucas Sang and marathon runner Wesly Ngetich have joined over 700 Kenyans who have died in the violence since the December elections

   Runner fails at attempt to go three marathons (OC Register)
Charles Bauknecht who planned to run three marathons within a two-day period to raise money for a cystic fibrosis charity failed to accomplish his challenge due to harsh weather conditions. His extreme run started overnight Saturday and lasted into the early morning Sunday. His first lap around the marathon course took four hours on Saturday evening; his second in the early am on Sunday took four hours and 45 minutes. The cold weather and rain prevented him from the third race.

   First Chicago, Now Tokyo Marathon Canceled. (Phillippine Star)
In October of 2007, Chicago race officials canceled the Chicago marathon due to extreme and unseasonal high heat. Tokyo sighted 16 injuries and blizzard like conditions for derailing their marathon. More than 20,000 runners were told to go home and train for another marathon.

   Tybee Marathon champion Kosiorek slims down, wins (Savannah Now)
Jeff Kosiorek won the 2008 Tybee Marathon in 2:41:26 taking ten minutes off his personal best which was set at the Rocket City Marathon in December 2008. Kosiorek had shed fifty pounds over the past year. Nicholas Eugster finished in second and Radek Parnica was third. In the women's race Kristina Yanosek-Tyler won in a 3:03:19.

   Going the Distance: Man Rebounds from Cancer to Make Marathon (The Independent)
At the age of 63, Dave Schonauer walks 26.2 miles because he has be given a second chance. At first it was just a great cause to walk along Myrtle Beach and raise money for the Cancer Association of Anderson. But when Dave and experienced cancer first hand it brought a whole new meaning to walking for his health. Dave will walk the Myrtle Beach Marathon and be among a team of individuals who will raise over $90,000 for the Cancer Association.

   Strider member aims to be 50-50 marathon man (The Times Indiana)
Running the New York City Marathon in 2004 Doug Walter set out to run 4 marathons per year and complete the quest to run 50 marathons, one in each of the 50 U.S. states. His quest picked up the pace when he finished 12 in one year and now he will reach his goal by his 45th birthday by completing the Honolulu Marathon.
 
   Losing Time After Losing Weight (The Tampa Tribune)
Dave Dawes is unrecognizable even by his own brother, Steve. Most people spend minutes staring as Dave has lost half of his 300 pound frame in the past several years and he has run a 4:36 marathon while doing so. Dave's eyes where filled with tears when he completed his first 20 miler while training for the Gasparilla Marathon in Tampa Bay, Florida. He wife thought he was in pain. It was simple the joy of running and the overwhelming feeling of accomplishment.

Rupp knows that Salazar had done it all and follows hangs on his every word to achieve a new higher level of success while training for the 10,000 and possibly following in his mentors footsteps by running the elusive marathon distance.

   Cold, hard facts don't stop Tybee Marathon runners (Savannah Morning News)
The Tybee Marathon will move the awards ceremony indoors for the first time in many years. While conditions last year were near ideal for Mike Aldrink's course record setting debut in Tybee, there are concerns about the conditions this year. Race director Ron Boyette said that the runners will brave whatever elements the coastal marathon throws at them.
 
   Michelle LaFleur hopes for repeat at Tybee Marathon. (Savannah Morning News)
So dominant is Michelle LaFleur in races held during the Tybee Marathon that she is almost considered a shoe in for the win. She owns the course record in the marathon and the half marathon. She was won the 5K twice in 2006 and 2007. LaFleur has chosen the half-marathon this year and has won it before along with 5 marathon victories on the double loop flat and fast oceanside course.

 Beppu-Oita Mainichi Marathon

   Marathon debutante wins Beppu-Oita Marathon (IAAF)
Twenty-two year old Tomoya Adachi, who was not an invited elite athlete, won the 2008 Beppu-Oita Marathon with a 2:11:59 in his marathon debut. Rachid Kisri from Morocco finished second in 2:13:07 and Olympic team hopeful Scott Wescott from Australia finished third in 2:13:36 missing the Olympic team qualifier by over three minutes. Adachi plans to train harder for his next marathon.

On April 27 Lisa Tivens will push her limits and her nearly four and one half hour half-marathon time and run the Big Sur Marathon. Tivens will be raising money and getting healthy

   Registration opens for newly named Bank of America Chicago Marathon (The Chicago Tribune)
The 2008 Chicago Marathon schedule for Oct 12th will open its registration doors Friday at Midnight. The early registration comes on the heels of a new title sponsor announcement from race organizers. Bank of America will take over for the previously named LaSalle Bank title.
 
   Bank of America Chicago Marathon Announces New Name, New Logo and Opening of 2008 Registration (CNN)
The 2008 Chicago Marathon will be celebrating its 30th anniversary. Now titled Bank of America after the banks acquisition of LaSalle Bank, race organizers are looking forward to a field of 45,000 runners. Chicago Marathon Registration opens Friday, February 1, 2008.

   74-year-old Biman Mullick to run London marathon (Times of India)
Biman Mullick who turned 74 will run the London marathon in 2008. The self professed running addict is running on a platform for clean air and to encourage others to embrace fitness. He will have plenty of time on the course to do so as his 2006 time was well over 6 hours.

   Local man blazes path for black marathoners with National Black Marathoners Association. (The Dallas Morning News.)
In 2005 Tony Reed, founder of the National Black Marathoners Association, converged in Missouri with 15 other African-Americans to run the Louis & Clark Marathon. With over 800 members the NBMA will travel to Phoenix on February 17 for the Lost Dutchman Marathon. The Cowtown Marathon will host the 2009 NBMA gathering.

   No Sign of 2008 Punjab Marathon Yet (Daily Times)
The Punjab government stated that the 2008 International marathon, scheduled for January 8th, may not take place at all due to the civil unrest in the country. The recent violence caused by the results of an election have spread fear among citizens and kept organized events to a minimum.

   Runner from Area Attempts World Record with Marathon of Marathon Runs (The State Journal Register)
Dawn Hamlin has Morocco (Africa) and Dubai (Asia) already in the books. She has five continents to go, culminating with The Last Marathon in Antarctica on March 5. When finisshed she will be one of only 4 womean to have run a marathon on all 7 continents. She will also run the Norht Pole Marathon on March 26th to cap off her 7 marathons in 70 day Guinness World Record attempt.

   Sponsor Name Change for Chicago Marathon (Race Results Weekly)
Following the acquisition of the LaSalle Bank, the Chicago Marathon will now be known as the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Bank of America is already a major player in sports sponsorships, which include Major League Baseball, NASCAR, National Football League, the PGA Tour and the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team.

   Maine Runners Make 130 Mile Trek to View Marathon Movie (The Lincoln County News)
The movie title was "Spirit of the Marathon" and 7 men from Maine held a marathon of their own to pay tribute to all those who have trained and ran a marathon. The men ran legs of the 130 mile distance from Brunswick to Bar Harbor to watch the one time showing on January 24th.
 
   Tributes Paid to Marathon Man Roy Smith (Oxford Mail)
Roy Smith has passed away at the age of 69. Roy Smith ran the Abingdon Marathon in 1994 to finish his 100th marathon in less than six years. Smith was the first man in Oxfordshire to collect 100 marathon finishes. Smith did his first and his 100th marathon in Abingdon. Smith always stated that it was a life long goal to run a century of marathon. Mr Smith took part in the Abingdon Marathon in 1994 to complete his century at the same venue as his first marathon.

   Willcox woman finishes Rock N Roll marathon in under five hours; ready for more (Arizona Range News)
Shaye Klump began a fitness program and wound up training for a marathon. The "guinea pig" Klump was asked to help Jesse Brown earn her license as a personal trainer. The gradual training program led to over thirty pounds of weight lost and a marathon finish of less than five hours.

   Man plans to run Surf City marathon three times (OC Register)
Charles Bauknecht of Costa Mesa intends to run the Surf City Marathon three times to raise $30,000 for cystic fibrosis research. He will run the course at 10 p.m. Saturday, at 2 a.m. on Sunday with a friend and again at 6:50 a.m. with the other marathon entrants. Bauknecht, who started running marathons two years ago, has yet to run over sixty-five miles in a weekend.

   Cheyenne teacher runs marathon in Antarctic (Billings Gazette)
With well over 160 marathons Cheyenne Junior High School teacher,Brent Weigner has not ranked the races on levels of difficulty. But the Antarctic Marathon was not much different from his 15 degree snow packed training runs in Cheyenne.

   Cancer survivor inspires other marathon runners for Flying Pig Marathon (The Enquirer)
Ann Davis does not consider herself a hero. Davis was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in February 1999. She recently finished the Nike Women's Marathon and that has inspired seven of her co-workers to tackle her next marathon by her side in Cincinnati. The are racing with the motto "if Ann can, I can". Ann and her motivated friends will race the 26.2 distance in May.
