   Tale of the tape is more reliable than BMI (Ottawa Citizen)
Body Mass Indicators (BMI) used to be the standard by which to check fitness levels, but studies show that the best method may be a good old-fashioned tape measure. BMI doesn't take into account someone who's training and whose muscle mass is greater than the average person and since muscle weighs more than fat, the results are inconclusive. By measuring waist circumference (the distance between the top of your hipbone and the bottom of your ribcage) one will get a more accurate gauge.
 
   WADA rethink hormone test (Telegraph UK)
Professor Peter Sonksen who has invented a blood test to detect artificial human growth hormone in athletes has been called upon to discuss the validation process required for his tests to be used at Beijing Olympics. In the wake of various doping scandals coming to light, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) plans to crack down on doping. Sonksen had perfected his test for HGH for the 2000 Sydney Olympics only to have his funding withdrawn by the International Olympic Committee and his work sidelined by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) in favour of an alternative test; but WADA is revisiting his findings.

   Cold, hard facts don't stop Tybee Marathon runners (Savannah Morning News)
The Tybee Marathon will move the awards ceremony indoors for the first time in many years. While conditions last year were near ideal for Mike Aldrink's course record setting debut in Tybee, there are concerns about the conditions this year. Race director Ron Boyette said that the runners will brave whatever elements the coastal marathon throws at them.

So dominant is Michelle LaFleur in races held during the Tybee Marathon that she is almost considered a shoe in for the win. She owns the course record in the marathon and the half marathon. She was won the 5K twice in 2006 and 2007. LaFleur has chosen the half-marathon this year and has won it before along with 5 marathon victories on the double loop flat and fast oceanside course.
 
 London Marathon

   74-year-old Biman Mullick to run London marathon (Times of India)
Biman Mullick who turned 74 will run the London marathon in 2008. The self professed running addict is running on a platform for clean air and to encourage others to embrace fitness. He will have plenty of time on the course to do so as his 2006 time was well over 6 hours.

   No Sign of 2008 Punjab Marathon Yet (Daily Times)
The Punjab government stated that the 2008 International marathon, scheduled for January 8th, may not take place at all due to the civil unrest in the country. The recent violence caused by the results of an election have spread fear among citizens and kept organized events to a minimum.

   Local man blazes path for black marathoners with National Black Marathoners Association. (The Dallas Morning News.)
In 2005 Tony Reed, founder of the National Black Marathoners Association, converged in Missouri with 15 other African-Americans to run the Louis & Clark Marathon. With over 800 members the NBMA will travel to Phoenix on February 17 for the Lost Dutchman Marathon. The Cowtown Marathon will host the 2009 NBMA gathering.

   Bank of America Chicago Marathon Announces New Name, New Logo and Opening of 2008 Registration (CNN)
The 2008 Chicago Marathon will be celebrating its 30th anniversary. Now titled Bank of America after the banks acquisition of LaSalle Bank, race organizers are looking forward to a field of 45,000 runners. Chicago Marathon Registration opens Friday, February 1, 2008.
 
   Registration opens for newly named Bank of America Chicago Marathon (The Chicago Tribune)
The 2008 Chicago Marathon schedule for Oct 12th will open its registration doors Friday at Midnight. The early registration comes on the heels of a new title sponsor announcement from race organizers. Bank of America will take over for the previously named LaSalle Bank title.

   Sponsor Name Change for Chicago Marathon (Race Results Weekly)
Following the acquisition of the LaSalle Bank, the Chicago Marathon will now be known as the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Bank of America is already a major player in sports sponsorships, which include Major League Baseball, NASCAR, National Football League, the PGA Tour and the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team.

Named by USA Today Weekend Magazine in May of 2003, Sedona has been labeled as the most beautiful place in America. Most runners list scenery as a huge draw for bringing them to a marathon and Sedona certainly tops the list of attractive races. The Sedona Marathon, in its third year, will attract people from all over the world and most of the 50 states.

   Tram Work Diverts Edinburgh Marathon (Red Orbit)
Organizers for the 2008 Edinburgh Marathon announced that the route would be altered due to construction on the cities tram scheme. Included in the announcement was the declaration that Ian Sharman, of London, set a new Guinness World Record while running the 2007 marathon dressed in a super hero costume. His time was just over 3 hours.

   WMM Champ Cheruiyot Joins RAK Half Field (Race Results Weekly)
Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot, known best for his wins of the Boston and Chicago Marathons and being the first male to claim the $500,000 World Marathon Majors prize, returns to race the Ras Al Khaimah Half-Marathon. In its second year, the RAF Half Marathon quickly established itself as the world's top winter half-marathon after world record holder in the half marathon Sammy Wanjiru set a world record in a 58:53. The RAK Half has a $200,000 prize money purse, the largest of any half-marathon.
 
 Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon

   Original Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Begins New Decade in San Diego (PR NET)
Sunday, June 1, 2008, marks the start of a new decade for the original Rock 'n' Roll Marathon (www.RnRmarathon.com) in San Diego. Listed as one of the world's premiere marathons Elite Racing, Inc. will host the 11th annual event which has become known as a 26.2-mile block party with a live band at every mile, hundreds of cheerleaders, themed water stations and a post-race concert. Training plans and preparation should be underway for 20,000 runners and walkers.

   32nd MILO Marathon: 4 cities, 1 big race! (Manila Bulletin)
The 32nd running of the MILO Marathon will host elimination races in the cities of Manila, Tarlac, Cebu and Davao Each race will occur at the same time and this will mark the first time in the history of the country’s longest and most prestigious running event. The races are scheduled for August 3rd and race organizers hope that these stage races will show the marathon's commitment to raise awareness about running and the many health benefits derived from running.

   Warming Up for the Seoul International Marathon (Donga)
Around 70 athletes will compete in Jeju as preparation for the March 16th Seoul International Marathon. Choi Gyeong-ryeol, who coaches many of the athletes uses the 8km race to prepare his athletes legs for the marathon. Athletes train on the hills usually the day after their long of ninety minutes or more.

   Chaffee County Running Club members will host the fourth annual Run Through Time Marathon/Half Marathon (The Mountain Mail)
The Run through time will go from Salida to Turret, Colorado and return on a rigorous trail back to Salida. The gun goes off at 9 am in front of the Scout Hut in Salida. The March 15th race was dreamed up by Rickie Redland and Jon MacManus of Salida on a long run. They encourage runners to simply run and have fun while doing it. With and entry fee of only 35 dollars for the marathon, Redland and ManManus expect a large gathering of local runners.

   Napa Valley Marathon to turn 30 (Napa Valley Register)
Celebrating its 30th year, the 2008 Napa Valley Marathon is expecting a sold-out field of 2,300 runners. The race has again been selected by the Road Runners Club of America as its National Marathon Championships. Open field and Masters winners will once again receive commemorative etched wine bottles and the open winners will also receive their weight in Napa Valley wines provided by the Silverado Trail Wineries Association.

The Surf City Marathon, formerly known as the Pacific Shoreline Marathon, will be celebrating its third year. 16,000 runners will be participating in the sold-out event. The ocean front marathon has an appeal that keeps runners coming to race in Orange County.
 
 Osaka Int'l Ladies Marathon

   Fukushi all set for long trek into unknown in Osaka International Marathon (Daily Yomiuri Online)
Kayoko Fukushi is Japan's leading 10,000 meter and half-marathon specialist. She will open her marathon career on Sunday at the Osaka International Ladies Marathon. She is hoping for her Olympic birth into Beijing for 2008 and would need a roughly at 2:23 marathon time to claim the last spot on the team.
 
 Cowtown Marathon

   Some runners need to stretch themselves (Star-Telegram)
The Cowtown Marathon has added a 50-kilometer ultramarathon race to the 2008 event festivities to celebrate their 30th anniversary. 50 kilometers is only five miles longer than a marathon, but for a new ultra runner, that five miles extra means everything.

   Thousands join Kolkata Marathon, Lone wins (The Hindu)
The 2008 Kolkata Marathon had 20,000 participants in the running festivities and one winner, Bhairon Singh Lone who finished in 2:20:53. Angad Kumar was runner-up in a 2:21:39 and Bipul Sharma was third in a 2:24. The women's race was a 10.5 km run.

   Tybee Marathon champion Kosiorek slims down, wins (Savannah Now)
Jeff Kosiorek won the 2008 Tybee Marathon in 2:41:26 taking ten minutes off his personal best which was set at the Rocket City Marathon in December 2008. Kosiorek had shed fifty pounds over the past year. Nicholas Eugster finished in second and Radek Parnica was third. In the women's race Kristina Yanosek-Tyler won in a 3:03:19.
 
 Beppu-Oita Mainichi Marathon

   Marathon debutante wins Beppu-Oita Marathon (IAAF)
Twenty-two year old Tomoya Adachi, who was not an invited elite athlete, won the 2008 Beppu-Oita Marathon with a 2:11:59 in his marathon debut. Rachid Kisri from Morocco finished second in 2:13:07 and Olympic team hopeful Scott Wescott from Australia finished third in 2:13:36 missing the Olympic team qualifier by over three minutes. Adachi plans to train harder for his next marathon.

   Yamauchi Taking a Breather (Sporting Life)
After a victory at the 2008 Osaka Ladies International Marathon, Mara Yamauchi is taking a break. The 35 year old Brit is a likely candidate for Great Britain's Olympics Marathon team alongside Paula Radcliffe. Yamauchi won in a 2:25:10.
 
 Miami Marathon

   Garcia, Lijleblad win Miami Marathon (S.I.)
Jose Garcia, of Guatemala finished the Miami Marathon with a time of 2:17.43 which was good enough to win. Garcia pulled away in the last mile and a half to beat Kenyan runner Samuel Kiprotich, 2:18:14, and Ethiopian runner Demesse Tafera, 2:18:29. Kelly Lijleblad held on to win the women's race in 2:47:13, beating Russian runner Nedezha Tuptova, who had a time of 2:48:09. Brian Sell of Rochester Hills, Mich., set a new course record in the half marathon, finishing in 1:03:46.

   Ethiopia's Debele Lemma Wins Marrakech International Marathon (Magharebia)
Siyoum Debele Lemma, of Ethiopia, ran 8 seconds faster than the 2007 winning time by Samy Chumba,of Kenya, (2:10.56). Lemma won the 19th Marrakech International Marathon on Sunday. His fellow countrywoman Yeshi Esayias won the women's race in 2:35.40 easily outdistancing her compatriot by nearly 13 minutes.
 
 Miami Marathon

   Garcia wins Miami Marathon (The Ledger)
Jose Garcia of Guatemala won the 2008 Miami Marathon in a 2:17:43. Kenyan runner Samuel Kiprotich placed second with a time of 2:18:14 and Ethiopian runner Demesse Tafera finished at 2:18:29. Kelly Lijleblad of Boulder, Colorado, won the women's race in 2:47:13, beating Russian runner-up Nedezha Tuptova who trailed by a minute.
 
   Great day for marathoners in Miami (Miami Herald)
More than 10,000 runners, including an international elite field, competed in the 2008 ING Miami Marathon and Half Marathon. Jose Amado Garcia of Guatemala, the Pan American Games silver medalist, won the 26.2-mile marathon in 2:17:43. American Kelly Liljeblad won the marathon in 2:47:13, but missed the qualifying time for the U.S. Olympic Women's Marathon Trials by thirteen seconds.
 
 Marathon de Marrakech

   Ethiopian Double at the Marrakech Mmarathon (IAAF)
Ethiopians had a double triumph at the 2008 International Marrakech marathon. Siyoum Debele Lemma won the men’s race in 2:10:48 and Yeshi Esayias won the women’s race in 2:35:40. It was the nineteeth running of the marathon.
