   Brush man running to help friends in need (Fort Morgan Times)
What began as a way of maintaining general fitness has rendered George O’Clair a regular fund raising marathon runner. O'Clair thought he would never run a marathon. But 13 years ago all that changed and now he is training for the famed Boston Marathon. His qualifying time of 3 hours and 8 minutes should put him near the first corral at the start of the twenty thousand plus race.
 
   Developer asked to give Marathon museum a running start (Metro West Daily News)
The Hopkinton Athletic Association has asked the developer of Legacy Farms to donate land to a museum dedicated to the history of marathon races worldwide. The museum will be built in an old farmhouse one hundred yards from the former starting point of the Boston Marathon. The developer who owns the land plans to build 940 residential units along with 450,000 square feet of commercial space.

The Dubai Marathon is now history and Haile Gebrselassie almost did the unthinkable. But for Matthew Woods he achieved his own version of immortality. His name appears on the same results sheet as the world record holder. Woods' time of 3:29 placed him close enough in the one thousand runner field to allow him to boast about his time and place.

Kate Lawler of Big Brother 3 fame has stated that if she raises twenty thousand Euro's by April 13 she will run London in her underwear. Her efforts and scanty apparel will provide money for the Cystic Fibrosis charity.

43-year old Canadian Karen Meades will be one of seven hundred competing in the 2008 Marathon des Sables, a notoriously grueling six-day, 243-km marathon across the Moroccan desert. Meades is looking to accomplish something new and challenging while setting an example. Voted one of the Top 100 Most Powerful Women in Canada, Meades, founder of an Inuit health care program in Nunavut, is an avid marathoner, ironman triathlete and adventurer.

   Mission Viejo woman runs marathon in memory of her parents (OC Register)
Beth Moyer Kelly has tested her physical limits in several half marathons. On January 6th she ran the OC Marathon in honor of her parents who passed away last April. Her mental limits had been tested for well over 6 months and the marathon race and the long training runs have been therapy for her.

VALE runner Emma Gooderham finishe thrid overall in the Gloucester Epney Marathon. Her sub 3 hour race was largely due to her training for the 50K distance. She has plans to qualify for the 100K Celtic Plate in Cardiff in May.

Legendary marathoner Grete Waitz, who is undergoing her own personal battles having been diagnosed with cancer three years ago, is fighting the disease by helping other cancer patients stay active. Inspired by Lance Armstrong, Waitz believes having implemented a renewed exercise program has helped build strength through the chemotherapy. She is working with the foundation Aktiv mot kreft (Active against Cancer) to get this message across.

Despite years of Vitamin C being touted as a preventive measure against the common cold, studies from several large-scale trials have not reduced incidence of the common cold in humans or influenza in animals. Vitamin C can boost the immune system slightly. those who may benefit the most are those involved in strenuous, prolonged exercise. Vitamin C supplementation may be beneficial in reducing the incidence or severity of upper respiratory infection following the exercise.

Grete Waitz had become a couch potato three years ago when she learned of her cancer diagnosis. Shortly after she received an email from another legendary athlete. Lance Armstrong, 7 time Tour de France winner, told her to stay active. Waitz has now started a new foundation to fight cancer in Oslo. She began to find humor and a more positive outlook once she got off the couch.

   Triumphant Mara Yamauchi emerges as a genuine threat to Paula Radcliffe (Times)
Triumphant Mara Yamauchi eyes her Olympic dream with her fellow country woman Radcliffe looking on. Three other woman had run faster that Radcliffe Last year and now her own teammate has added her name to the list of contenders for Gold in Beijing. Yamauchi, orginally from the UK and now training with the Japanese, was considered a dark horse for the Olympics. Her time of 2 hours 25 minutes and 10 seconds will make her a serious threat on Olympic race day.

   Chris Short set for fund-raising marathon in Tokyo (Kent Messenger)
Chris Short will pay his own way to the Tokyo Marathon and is appealing to sponsors to donate money for his cause. Pilgrims Hospice looked after and cared for Chris' grandfather until he passed last February. Chris will travel to Tokyo for his debut marathon and help to raise money for the Pilgrim's Hospice with costs £7.2 million to run annually

   Age-defying De Reuck still strong (Daily Camera)
43-year old mother of two Colleen De Reuck may be better known for her running resume which includes four Olympic Games, bronze medal in the World Cross Country Championships, a few world road bests and scores of road race victories. De Reuck who is in training for the 2008 US Olympic Women's Marathon Team Trials will test her mettle at the 2008 USA Cross Country Championships. De Reuck, the defending U.S. Olympic marathon trials champion, will be forty-four at the starting line for the Trials.

   Durban Marathon Could Be Doorway to Olympics (SABCnews)
The 2008 Nedbank Durban City Marathon will be the qualifying event for the 2008 Beijing Olympics for South African long distance Olympic hopefuls. The top three male athletes will have automatic qualification if they finish under 2:12. The top three women will qualify if their times are under 2:36.

   Wanjiru Predicts London Trial (Sporting Life)
Sammy Wanjiru is betting the Flora London Marathon is the race that will attract the eyes of the Kenyan selection team for the Beijing Olympic games. Wanjiru hopes the competition and the rivalry in London along with his performance and the faster overall times will earn him a spot in Beijing. His race on the 13 of April may be over shadowed only by the Boston Marathon eight days later. On Patriots Day in Boston Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot will try to run down his fourth Boston title and earn his own Olympic Birth.

   Kenyan women deserve better, says former runner (Canada.com)
In a country that is known for champion distance runners, Kenyan female athletes missed out on opportunities to grow in the sport as the elite men due to lack of education, sexist male officials and traditional views on marriage. Lydia Stephens-Okech, one of three Kenyan females allowed to compete for Kenyan's Olympic team at the 1968 Mexico Games, is working to give young Kenyan women a better chance at Olympic success.
 
   Huntington runner aims for the top, again! (NewsDAY)
Nina Kuscsik knows what it is like to be on top. As the first female finisher of the 1972 New York City Marathon and the first officially declared winner of the Boston marathon she has become a legend amongst runners. Her marathon prowess of running nearly 50 marathons will provide her the fuel and motivation to attempt another running challenge. The Empire State Building Run Up will give her a feeling of being on top when she is done no matter what place she finishes.

   Mullins controls men's Talahassee marathon (Tallahassee Democrat)
Scott Mullins blasted the Tallahassee Marathon with a two hour and tweny four minute over all finish time. His time cost him 100 dollars per second as he missed the course record of 2 hours 23 minutes and 55 seconds by the narrowest of margins. The next closest Tallahassee finisher was the Florida running legend Jack McDermott.

   Amputee chases shot at Olympics (Press of Atlantic City)
In training to qualify for the 2008 US Women's Olympic Trials, Amy Palmiero-Winters, a mother of two who has garnered recognition from Runner's World, ESPN and PowerBar, is an amputee with a prosthesis below her left knee. With the approval of USATF to compete in the Olympics rather than the Paralympics if she qualifies, she will need to knock seventeen minutes off her personal best time and finish under 2:47. She will make her attempt at the 2008 Sarasota Marathon.
 
 Beppu-Oita Mainichi Marathon

   Adachi wins debut marathon at Beppu-Oita (Pakistan Daily Times)
Japan’s Tomoya Adachi slipped past Elijah Mutai of Kenya near the 24 mile mark to win his debut at the Beppu-Oita marathon on Sunday. Adachi, 22 had faded to nearly 200 meters behind Mutai before catching him and hitting the tape in two hours 11 minutes 59 seconds. Rachid Kisri of Morocco finished second in 2:13:07, followed by Scott Westcott of Australia third in 2:13:36. Mutai, who led for nearly all of the race failed to finish in the top 10.

   Cellcom Green Bay Marathon on another record pace (Green Bay Gazette)
Registration for the 2008 Cellcom Green Bay Marathon is up 40% compared to last year. Although to early to predict, race organizers would not be surprised to see a record number of participants. The race has already begun a marathon kick-off offering local training runs as well as a six-week marathon training program.

Claudia Becque prepares the 2008 Napa Valley Marathon with a lofty goal in mind - qualifying for the 2008 US Women's Olympic Team Trials. She will need to run a sub 2:47. She will be aiming to better her personal best time of 2:58:25 from the 2007 Berlin Marathon. Her three other marathon finishes show tremendous improvement thru the years - 2002 Chicago Marathon in a 3:26, 2003 Boston Marathon in a 3:32 and 2005 New York Marathon in a 3:09.

   Kolkata Marathon sees record participation (Thaindian News)
Over 25,000 people participated in the Airtel Kolkata Marathon. The participants included school children, corporate executives, and physicallyl challenged. The winners of the marathon were Bhairo Singh Loney in the men’s category, Pampa Chandra in the women’s marathon.

   Gebrselassie still concerned about Beijing smog (Guardian Unlimited)
World Record Holder Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia will decide in the next two months whether he will run the marathon event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Gebrselassie who suffers from respiratory issues fears that Beijing's air pollution will damage his health. He will most likely run the 10,000 meters as an alternative.

   Olympic athletes look for a solution to Beijing's pollution (International Herald Tribune)
Athletes at the 2008 Beijing Games may have to run as they never have before - in face masks due to the poor air quality of smog filled Beijing. Several American officials have said their athletes would not compete wearing masks, which would embarrass the host Chinese. A few elite athletes visited Beijing last week to inspect the facilities and do promotions for Adidas, a major Olympic sponsor. Of the athletes, Haile Gebrselassie who is concerned about the pollution will be training outside China and make his decision whether he will or will not run the marathon over the next two months.

ING, a financial services company that has a high profile as a title sponsor for a number of races, is partnering up with race management powerhouse Elite Racing, Inc., a division of Competitor Group, Inc., to become title sponsor of the ING Philadelphia Distance Run half marathon. This partnership is a multi-year agreement that involves naming rights as well as a variety of marketing, promotional, hospitality and charitable components. ING adds another premier running event to its portfolio of race sponsorships around the globe.

   Butler injures foot; Kazulina wins Tallahassee Marathon (Talahassee Democrat)
Tamara Kazulina of the Ukraine won the 2008 Tallahassee Marathon in a 2:57:04, beating Diedra Brill who was runner-up in a 3:05:47 and race favorite Lisa Butler who was third in a 3:11:39. Butler was the race favotire attempting to qualify for the Olympic Trials, but running with a foot injury impeded her race.
 
 Tybee Marathon

   Atlanta runner engineers win in women's Tybee marathon (Savannah Morning News)
Kristina Yanosek-Tyler finished her first marathon in eight years and did so with a Boston Qualifying time of three hours and 3 minutes. Tyler was able to run the second loop of the course 3 minutes faster than her first loop and that was the difference in time of second place women's finisher Jennifer Eberman of Toronto, Canada.

From Ironman finishers to record holders people flock to Tybee for a flat fast race. Recently engaged runner Melanie Stuart was running for her fiance' Dan who was slacking. Janet Burgess flew all the way from Renton, Washington to claim another state on her list to claim a marathon in all 50 states.
