   Ames Native to Run in U.S. Marathon Trials (Mid-Iowa Newspaper)
Erin Block has qualified for the 2008 Olympic Trials with a 2:45.58 at the St. George Marathon, but is certain she will not be a member of the U.S. Olympic Team. Block ran her first marathon in 1996 and worked hard to achieve a sub-3:00 marathon. Despite a torn hamstring, Block is looking forward to enjoying herself at the trials.

   Runners, take your marks for Round 2 of Snickers Marathon (The Albany Herald)
The Snickers Marathon Energy Bar Marathon may have the longest name in the marathon ranks but the race will still be 26.2 miles. The race, which starts at 7 am Saturday morning, will boast about doubling its total number of participant for its second annual race. Nearly one thousand runners will toe the line with 35 military runners on the other side of the world joining them from the Green Zone to run their own version of the marathon.

If sunny skies and 70 degrees were not enough for a great day at the races, then how about 750 dollars. That is all it took for Sammy Nyamongo, of Marietta, to win the 26.2-mile marathon with a time of 2:33.44. Allison Dublinski , of Atlanta, collected her 750 dollar prize as the top women's finisher, crossing the line at 2:53.52.

   Running Boston for a Cure (Wicked Local)
Most runners realize that a marathon is 26.2 miles long. At age 36, Kevin McKeon realizes that his race might be much longer. McKeon has outdistanced cancer twice. His first bout was thyroid and his second, just weeks after completing chemo for the the first, was a malignant brain tumor. He has made a decision to run the Boston Marathon as part of the Dana-Farber Cancer Team to raise money for cancer research.

Former NHL tough guy and London Knights minotiry owner Basil McRae plans to run the Boston Marathon in 2009. McRae who qualified with a 3:27:32 at a marathon in Tampa, Florida wants time to prepare. McRase has recently relocated his family back to the United Kingdom.

   Defending Boston Marathon champ Cheruiyot leads strong Kenyan field (USA Today)
Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot will defend his title in this year's Boston Marathon and attempt to become the first Kenyan to win the 112-year-old race four times. Second and third place finishers in the 2007 BAA Boston Marathon, James Kwambai and Stephen Kiogora, added their names to the already impressive field for the 2008 edition.

   ATHENA AWARDS: Superathlete Jean Driscoll has rolled with every punch (The Capital Times)
Jean Driscoll, an elite wheelchair racer who has won the Boston Marathon eight times, will be the keynote speaker for The Business Forum's 2008 ATHENA Award program. Having set world records or produced world-best times from sprints to endurance events, Sports Illustrated for Women recognizes her as one of the top 25 female athletes of the 20th century. Driscoll was born with spina bifida to the lower end of her spinal cord and was able to walk with braces until age 14 until she dislocated a hip in a bike accident.

   Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot aiming at fourth consecutive Boston marathon title (IAAF)
Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot, the Boston Marathon course record holder and winner in 2003, 2006 and 2007, has added incentive to win as he will seek to become the first Kenyan to claim four Boston Marathon crowns. 2007 Chicago Marathon winner Patrick Ivuti will go head-to-head against Cheruiyot who was fourth in the Chicago race.

   It’s a Breeze as Magwaca Wins Buffalo Marathon (Daily Dispatch)
Thembakosi Ndyogolo, whose training had suffered from a groin injury could only hold on to second place as 21-year-old Transkeian, Sibongiseni Magwaca took top honors in the East London 35th Anniversary Buffalo Marathon in a time of 2 hours and 28 minutes.

   LA Marathon Race Director Running Off at the Mouth (LA Times)
Impressed by Russian Tatiana Aryasova’s victory of the women's race, the 2008 Los Angeles Marathon’s co-founder and president, William Burke, stated in a televised interview, "You can’t keep those women down. You can’t get them back in the kitchen." Many have been offended by this comment and shocked at Burke whose wife is the first woman and the first African-American on the Los Angeles County board of supervisors and the first African-American woman to go to Congress from California.

   Russian woman beats men in L.A. Marathon (The Statesman)
Russia's Tatiana Aryasova, in her marathon debut, started her career with a win in Sunday's Los Angeles Marathon. Her time of 2 hours, 29 minutes, 9 seconds, allowed to win the man versus woman challenge with her nearly 20 minute head start. Kenya's Laban Moiben won the men's division in 2hours, 13 minutes and 50 seconds

   Aryasova, Moiben win L.A. Marathon (Los Angeles Times)
25,000 runners participated in the twenty-third running of the 2008 Los Angeles Marathon. 5,000 meter specialist Tatiana Aryasova of Russia debuting in the distance won the women's race in a 2:29:32 and won the $100,000 bonus in the gender race. Laban Moiben of Kenya won the men's race in 2:13:51.

   Los Angeles Marathon Returns Sunday with Gender Battle (Race Results Weekly)
The 2008 City of Los Angeles Marathon returns for its twenty-third running. The men's elites field will include Joseph Kahugu, Benjamin Kipchumba, Benson Mbithi, Philip Tarus and Joseph Ngolepus. The women's elite field will include Albina Gallyamova, Tatiana Titova, Mary Ptikany and Jacqueline Nytepi.
 
   Kenyan runner feels safe in U.S. (Pasadena Star News)
Elite Kenyan half marathoner Jacqueline Nytipei will have her marathon debut at the 2008 Los Angeles Marathon. She'll run against her aunt, Mary Ptikany, who is also one of the favorites to win. Although Nytipei is safely living in Tucson, Arizona with her husband; her eighteen month old son is still in Kenya which has been in upheaval since the presidential elections in December 2007.

The 2008 City of Los Angeles Marathon returns for its twenty-third running and the gender battle continues with on the gender battle: the winner of one gender will receive $120,000 plus a Honda automobile, while the other will receive just $20,000 plus the car.    Getting past `The Wall' is big test for L.A. Marathon runners! (Los Angeles Daily News)
Somewhere between miles eighteen and twenty-one many runners will lose their mental ability to continue going. Their body has simply run out of energy. This breaking point is known as "The Wall". Pretzels, Gatorade, water and GU will be along the course to help runners keep their energy, or glycogen, levels high enough to finish the race. Lisa Rodriguez hit the wall nearing mile 21 of the 2006 L.A. Marathon and has returned to face the monumental task once again.

Six AM on May 18, 2008 will mark the start of the 3rd annual Colorado Colfax Marathon and race organizers are touting this years race as blazingly fast. The course has been revamped with no net gain in elevation and the elimination of many of the arduous hills covered in the previous two years. Over six thousand runners are expected to travel the new scenic course which runs along the world famous Colfax Avenue.

   Double Duty for Marathon Man: All Work and All Play (Review)
40 year-old Peter Sewell raised £3,700 for the British Red Cross and received Tesco's Outstanding Fundraiser of the Year. Sewell did so in part by running two marathons in the same week and still made his regular work hours. Considering the two marathons were in two different countries, Ireland (Dublin) and New Your (USA), it was a feat that probably won't soon be repeated.

The 2008 El Paso Marathon in its second running saw Dirk Deheer and Angie Song-Rooney win the men's and women's races respectively. The race attracted 1,250 participants which was a twenty percent increase from last year.

   Fighting hunger one step at a time (Bridgeton News)
With the number of hungry individuals growing in the area, local pastor, Rev. Steve Shuster, pastor of First United Methodist Church, has decided to run the 2008 Seneca Creek Greenway Trail Marathon to increase awareness of this issue and raise funds for a local organization that assists these residents in need. The funds he has collected, so far, will go toward the Help and Hope Ministries' food closet. So far he has received about $8,000 from his congregation and the community.

   Ser-Od Wins Second Place in Asian Marathon (UB Post)
Four Mongolian athletes took part in the 2008 Asian Marathon Championships which were held in conjunction with the Hong Kong Marathon and B Ser-Od won the silver medal in 2:20. B Ser-Od has competed at the last three world championships and the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. Abdulhak Zakaria won in 2:11.49.

   Honolulu Marathon gives economy $108.89M boost (The Honolulu Advertiser)
Despite having 809 fewer runners than the year before, the 2007 Honolulu Marathon's economic impact on the state increased by $7.3 million, a new report says. In comparison, visitors who came specifically for the 2008 NFL Pro Bowl accounted for $28.07 million in spending and generated $2.5 million in state taxes. The positive economic impact news follows a difficult period for the marathon association.

   Honolulu Marathon comes up short on finish times (Star Bulletin)
After two months of reviewing hours of finish-line videotape and analysis of flawed race times, the Honolulu Marathon Association will not be able to provide "completely accurate" times for the 2007 race. The finishing times of about 2,400 runners were missed by the SAI timing system and as a result videos of the finish had to be studied to capture more data. It was the first time the marathon had used the system, and heavy rain and other difficulties caused the timing system to miss about 3,000 runners at the start and about 2,400 runners at the finish.

   Honolulu Marathon finds missing times (Pacific Business News)
Two months into a video review of the finish line at the Honolulu Marathon the race organizers have finalized the finishing times. Jim Barahal, Honolulu Marathon associate president stated the onf the twenty-thousand plus runners only 1,700 of their finishing times were truly accurate. Glitches in the computer system were noted for starting times, finish times and even split times along the course.

   Shami wins Lake Biwa Marathon (IAAF)
Mubarak Shami of Qatar won the 2008 Lake Biwa Marathon in 2:08:23 edging out Eritrean Yared Asmeron at the 36K mark. Many Japanese were also excited about the race within a race as Lake Biwa Marathon was the last men's qualifier for Japan's Olympic team. Satoshi Osaki who finished first Japanese in 2:08:40. The Japanese team will be announced on March 10th.
 
   Qatar's Shami wins Lake Biwa Marathon ahead of Ertirea's Yared Asmerom (International Herald Tribune)
Eritrea's Yared Asmerom surged late in the race but could not hold onto Qatar's Shami who won by 11 seconds with a time of 2 hours 8 minutes and 23 seconds. Third place went to Japan's Satoshi Osaki with a time of 2:08:36.

   Osaki makes the grade / All but earns ticket to Beijing with 3rd place at Biwa behind Shami, Asmeron (Daily Yomiuri Online)
The 2008 Lake Biwa Marathon saw Kenyan born Qatari Mubarak Hassan Shami, the silver medalist at the 2007 IAAF World Championships in Osaka, win in a 2:08:23. Yared Asmeron was runner up in 2:08:34 and Satoshi Osaki was third in 2:08:36. Osaki, a Japanese Olympic Team hopeful, set a personal best and may have secured himself a spot on the team. Lake Biwa Marathon was the final qualifying race for the Japanese Olympic Team.
