 Nagoya Int'l Women's Marathon

   Nakamura Wins Nagoya Marathon, But Olympic Selection Uncertain (Race Results Weekly)
The 2008 Nagoya International Ladies Marathon had a deep field with several top female Japanese marathoners vying for the third spot on the 2008 Japanese Olympic team in this final qualifying race. Debuting in the distance, Yurika Nakamura won in 2:25:51 upsetting several favorites such as Yumiko Hara, Yuri Kano, Chika Horie, Harumi Hiroyama, Naoko Sakamoto and Naoko Takahashi. Japan Amateur Athletics Federation will announce the Olympic team on Monday. Reiko Tosa, the bronze medalist from Osaka last year, and Mizuki Noguchi, the reigning Olympic gold medalist and the winner of last November's Tokyo Marathon, have already locked up team berths.

   Hamlin finishes quest at Antartica Marathon (Daytona Beach Newsjournal-online)
Dawn Hamlin raced her way into the Guinness Book of World Records by completing seven marathons on seven continents in only forty nine days. Hamlin, a 28-year-old Ormond Beach resident, completed the gruelling final race, Antartica Marathon, in about five and a half hours. Hamlin now joins less than 200 marathoners wordwide who have completed marathons on all seven continents. However, no female has come close to doing it as fast as Hamlin.

The pressure is on at the 2008 Nagoya Women’s Marathon which is the final qualifying race for the Japanese women's Olympic team. With Reiko Tosa and Mizuki Noguchi who are certain to be selected as two of the three members, the deep field will be vying for the one remaining spot. Expectations are high for favorites like Naoko Takahashi, Harumi Hiroyama, Naoko Sakamoto, Kiyoko Shimahara, Yumiko Hara and Yuri Kano.

Yurika Nakamura, of Japan, began leaving the field at the 32-kilometer mark and hit the tape for the win in 2 hours, 25 minutes, 51 seconds for her first marathon win. She was 28 seconds ahead of second-placed Yoshimi Ozaki. Sydney Olympic gold medalist and former world-record holder Naoko Takahashi finished a disappointing 27th and eliminated her chances of going to Beijing.

Naoko Takahashi, 2000 Sydney Olympic gold medalist who failed to qualify for the 2004 Athens Olympics, approaches the 2008 Nagoya International Women's Marathon with tremendous pressure. The Nagoya Marathon will be the final qualifying race for the Japanese Olympic Women's Team. Takahashi faces a stiff field that includes former Nagoya champions Harumi Hiroyama, Yumiko Hara and Takami Ominami along with Naoko Sakamoto, Yuri Kano and Kiyoko Shimahara.

   Kastor, Carlson pull off the 15K Championships in style. (The Florida Times-Union)
Deena Kastor Claimed the U.S. 15K women's championship in Jacksonville Florida. Andrew Carlson and Olympic Trials Marathoner Dan Browne went one, two respectively. Carlson hit the tape in 44 minutes and 12 seconds after finishing 10th last year. Browne's second place was redeeming after not finishing last years race.

   Kenyan marathon runner James Mugo Kariuki vows to return to Great Ocean Road Marathon (Geelong Advertiser)
Despite threats and civil unrest in the Rift Valley of Kenya, Mugo Kariuki will return to the Great Ocean Road Marathon. Kariuki uses his prize money to care for orphans back in his African village. He won the 2006 race and finished second in 2007. A trio of Ethiopians stand in his way of claiming victory again.

The Kroll’s Diner North Dakota Roughrider Marathon will be held on Saturday, Sept. 20, at Pioneer Park in Bismarck, North Dakota. A half marathon and marathon relay divisions will also be available.

   Paula Radcliffe reveals why she pulled out of the London Marathon (Mirror UK)
Paula Radcliffe, the marathon world record-holder, has suffered a soft tissue injury to her big toe on her right foot. With the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games a few months away, she was advised to take the precaution of missing London to prepare for the Olympics. Having since traveled from her training base in Albuquerque, New Mexico to travel to Germany for treatment, she had sustained her injury while training and had to take two weeks off.

   Marion Jones in federal prison for 6-month sentence (Fox News)
The former Olympic track star Marion Jones began her six-month sentence in federal prison as punishment for lying to investigators about using performance enhancing drugs and her role in a check fraud scam. Jones won three gold and two bronze medals in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, becoming perhaps the most famous and marketable female athlete in the world. After frequently denying ever having used performance enhancing drugs, Jones admitted she had lied to federal investigators in November 2003. Jones also admitted lying about her knowledge of the involvement of Tim Montgomery, the father of her older son, in a scheme to cash millions of dollars worth of stolen or forged checks.

Thirty years after being diagnosed with the worsening condition of multiple sclerosis, Zoe Koplowitz's goal in life is to continue with her can do attitude. She has done more than 20 New York Marathons and her other list of accomplished 26.2 miles includes Boston and London. A mediocre task and possibly embarrassing for some, Koplowitz and her can do attitude inspire others so much that she is now on the road with motivational speeking as well as running.

   A non marathon running KENYAN: Jepkosgei runs with weight of Kenyan hopes. (The Guardian)
No female Kenyan has ever won a gold medal in the Olympic Games. Januth Jepkosgei will return to Japan to defend her 800 meter title that she won in Osaka last year at the World Championships. With the pressure of training in a completely unstable surroundings, the "Eldoret Express" will have to be focussed mentally and physically to win the 800 meter in Beijing.

Most runners realize that a marathon is 26.2 miles long. At age 36, Kevin McKeon realizes that his race might be much longer. McKeon has outdistanced cancer twice. His first bout was thyroid and his second, just weeks after completing chemo for the the first, was a malignant brain tumor. He has made a decision to run the Boston Marathon as part of the Dana-Farber Cancer Team to raise money for cancer research.

World record holder Paula Radcliffe withdrew from the 2008 London Marathon due to a toe injury. Radcliffe, the champion of London Marathon in 2002, 2003 and 2005, would have been attempting her fourth win. The women's field will include Gete Wami, Berhane Adere, Constantina Tomescu-Dita, Svetlana Zakharova and Britons Hayley Haining and Liz Yelling

Jay Mistry will finally hang up his shoes after covering 30 miles per week for over 2 decades. The twenty year streak will end at roughly 17,500 miles, 24 marathons and over 100 half marathons. In doing so, Mistry has raised over £10,000 for charity. Just when his daughters thought they had seen him do it all, Mistry will do a back to back New York to London Marathon double to end his illustrious career.

   Prepping for the 2008 Olympics: Kastor, Browne, Sell headline fields for USA 15 km Championships (USATF News)
Defending Champion, Deena Kastor will try to claim her sixth 15K national title on Saturday, March 8th at the 15K Championships in Jacksonville, Florida. The 2004 Olympic Marathon Bronze medalist holds the current American record with a time of 47 minutes and 15 seconds. On the mens' side Dan Browne (15K Champion in 2000)will line up with 2008 Olympic Marathon runner Brian Sell. The field includes several standout half marathon runners and several Olympic hopefulls.

   Germans following Radcliffe's lead on wearing mask for Olympic Games in Beijing (The Star)
The German Marathon race walking team will have masks for warm up and for walking around. During the marathon, however, the masks are illegal. Radcliffe, in an effort to reduce complications from the severe pollution, has already tested the filtering mask. The mask is considered and illegal aid during the race and athletes will be immediately disqualified form the race.

   The Sarasota Marathon: WE HAVE A WINNER AT LAST! (Herals Tribune)
Cristina Noble crossed the finish line first in Sunday's Sarasota Marathon but Madeleine Zolfo, 43, of Treasure Island, Florida was officially declared the winner on Monday night. Noble ran the 2007 Detroit Marathon in 3 hours and 9 minutes and her disqualified time from Sunday was 3 hours and 10 minutes. Race officials concluded that the course was well marked and that Noble merely missed one mile of the course from the 17th mile to the 18th mile on an out and back section on Ken Thompson Parkway.

   Double Duty for Marathon Man: All Work and All Play (Review)
40 year-old Peter Sewell raised £3,700 for the British Red Cross and received Tesco's Outstanding Fundraiser of the Year. Sewell did so in part by running two marathons in the same week and still made his regular work hours. Considering the two marathons were in two different countries, Ireland (Dublin) and New Your (USA), it was a feat that probably won't soon be repeated.

   No Cause Yet In Death Of Little Rock Marathon Runner (KTHV Little Rock News)
Results from an initial examination of the body of Adam Nickel have been inconclusive. Nickel was the twenty seven year old Wisconsin man who collapsed and died after finishing the 2008 Little Rock Marathon. The Pulaski County coroner's office says more tests will be done that could take three to four weeks.

Britain's oldest employee, 101 year old Buster Martin aims to be the world's oldest marathon runner by completing the London Marathon and celebrating with a pint of beer and a cigarette. The former Army physical training instructor works three days a week for a London plumbing firm and says he has trained for the April 13th race in his spare time. Uncertain if he would be able to complete the race, Martin, who had 17 children and returned to work at the age of 99 saying he was bored after two years of retirement, would beat the previous record for world's oldest marathon runner by eight years.

Planning, training, nutrition and clothing were on the list of things to do before tackling a marathon. Randall Putz decided to run the San Diego Marathon in June and found a plethora of training protocols on line and in magazines as he trains for the Big Bear Marathon in September along with several other Big Bear Lake community members.

The 2008 Rome Marathon is expecting to see 15,000 runners at the start, 12,300 men and 2,700 women. A 50,000 Euro prize awaits the male and female winners with a 250,000 Euro bonus for breaking the world record. The 2008 marathon will be the first marathon to feature backward running, after the discipline featured as a demonstration sport at the 2007 event.

If sunny skies and 70 degrees were not enough for a great day at the races, then how about 750 dollars. That is all it took for Sammy Nyamongo, of Marietta, to win the 26.2-mile marathon with a time of 2:33.44. Allison Dublinski , of Atlanta, collected her 750 dollar prize as the top women's finisher, crossing the line at 2:53.52.
