   De Reuck Withdraws from Olympic Trials (Race Results Weekly)
Veteran marathoner and the defending Trials champion Colleen De Reuck has withdrawn from the 2008 US Women's Olympic Trials marathon competition in Boston next week. De Reuck, forty-four years old, cites a calf injury as the reason for her decision. She first injured the calf at the U.S. Cross Country Championships in February, then reinjured it at the U.S. 15-K Championships in Jacksonville, Florida, last month.
 
   Marathon runner gives Olympics one last shot (The Daily Tribune)
Molly Tabor will need to finish in the top 3 of 180 runners the day before the Boston Marathon. The 1995 Bates College graduate has be training with the Merrimack Valley Striders in North Andover, Mass., under coach Fernando Braz to prepare for her hopeful shot at Beijing.

   Jackson native Findley wins Andrew Jackson Marathon (Jackson Sun)
Jack Findley won his hometown marathon in 2 hours 53 minutes and 21 seconds to outdistance the other 87 runners in the marathon. Kris Whorton, 42, from Chattanooga, won the women's title in a time of 3 hours, 25 minutes and 59 seconds.

   Longtime Austin marathon director branches out (Statesman)
John Conley, who still runs 20 miles a week at age 50, will be celebrating the first birthday of his fledgling road race management company. Aside from being the director of the Austin Marathon, Conley, also assists with the Conquer the Coast Bicycle Ride in Corpus Christi, Komen Race for the Cure in Houston (the largest footrace in Texas), as well as the Texas Round-Up 10K. All of the races are now part of Conley Sports.

Jonah Pesner is gearing up for his first Boston Marathon. His pre-race carbo loading meal will be...matzoh (unleavened bread). Pesner didn't think he would have to violate the dietary rules for the week long Passover Holiday.

While Boston may be consider a team sport city, in late April the town will come alive for the 112th running of the Boston Marathon. The start in Hopkington will lead runners through several boroughs as they face the challenging hills section from mile 14 to the finish line.

Mike Piper will celebrate his one hundredth marathon at the 2008 Boston Marathon. Having started marathon running at thirty-five, Piper's early goal of finishing under three hours happened at his tenth marathon and the streak lasted for fifty five more marathons.

   Statue will honor famous Boston Marathon starter, athletics pioneer (Metrowest Daily News)
Boston Marathon officials will unveil a statue of George V. Brown. Along with being an influential person in the sports community, Brown was the athletic director of Boston Athletic Association for twenty years and served as starter of the Boston Marathon from 1905 until 1937. He was instrumental in having the starting line moved to Hopkinton in 1924

A group of five Cape Bretoners have been meeting regularly in the high winds and icy conditions to prepare for the Boston Marathon. The groups runs seem to make the time fly by. Last years Boston Marathon fed runners very high winds and slightly cooler than normal temperatures.

   Cancer and Lymphoma only motivates Illingworths to run more! (Beccles and Bungay Journal)
Simon Illingsworth, the proud father of three, will attempt to run 100 marathons in the next 5 years as a way of raising money for Cancer Research. Illingsworth has been diagnosed with testicular cancer and non Hodgkins lymphoma. This news only adds to the 45 year old's motivation. He will compete in London on April 12th and run another 26.2 miles less than one week later.

Ryan Ulmer will represent the Grand Forks Subway as one of the 52 runners being sponsored by this years Fargo Marathon. Jared Fogle "the Subway Guy" will serve as the official team captain for the sponsored runners.

   Marathon snub by Premier (Gold Coast News)
Premier Anna Bligh will next week launch the 30th anniversary of the Gold Coast marathon; but not on the Coast. The launch will be at Parliament House in Brisbane since it was a State Parliament sitting day. Many detractors feel that this is a snub by the premier considering 10,000 of the 16,000 competitors in the race came from outside Queensland and it was important she be represented at the main launch.

Grandma's marathon, scheduled for June 21st this year, has filled to capacity with 9,700 runners. The half marathon filled nearly one month ago and the 5K closed in only 3 days. This is the first time the marathon has used online registration.

   Hogeye Marathon organizers say flatter is better for runners (Arkansas Democrat Gazette)
The Hogeye Marathon will see the thirty second edition of their event. A small marathon of about eighty three participants has an updated course with less hills and more trails. The race director stated that there are few stretches of Fayetteville that are flat, although the course should be less grinding on runners than the previous course

   A Party of a Marathon! (Leader Post)
What do the majority of runners do at the end of a marathon? Drink beer and relax. Only this is not acceptable behavior for a trip focused on training a group of "high-risk" adolescents to run a marathon. The "Dirty Dozen" group raised public funds to send groups of people to the Jamaica Marathon. One of the members videotaped the drinking and smoking party that occurred at the end of the marathon. The number of complaints about the group has been "dizzying"

   Uganda: Uganda Red Cross Society Gets 2007 MTN Marathon Proceeds (All Africa)
Telecommunication firm MTN Uganda fulfilled its pledge towards the Uganda Red Cross Society's Mama Bag Project by giving $34,700 from the 2007 Kampala International Marathon. The proceeds will go to underprivileged areas to help provide adequate child birth conditions.

   Rare medical condition cited in death of Little Rock marathon runner from Kaukauna (Associated Press)
Dr. Stephen J. Erickson, state crime lab pathologist, stated the Adam Nickel had microscopically small heart arteries that tended to restrict the flow of blood. This conditioned coupled with the electrolyte imbalance common among marathon finishers contributed to his untimely death.

   Doctors: Ark. marathon runner died of rare mix of heart condition, electrolyte abnormalities (International Herald Tribune)
Dr. Charles Kokes stated the the 27 year old Adam Nickel passed away from complications due to electrolyte imbalance and multifocal small coronary artery fibromuscular dysplasia. The medical examiner stated that this was something that could not have been detected in a regular exam.

   Alone For Nearly Three Years, Petrova Runs for Her Daughters (Race Results Weekly)
Former Russian marathon record holder, Lyudmila Petrova, will start the 2008 London Marathon with a different mindset than some other elites in the race. Following the tragic death of her husband in a car accident in 2005, Petrova became a single mother of two daughters and primary breadwinner in the family. Petrova may not be the top-seeded female athlete in the field, but driven by her husband's memory and the essential need to take care of her family, she won't retire from competitive running just yet.
 
   Wami will miss Radcliffe rivalry but faces difficult marathon test (Guardian UK)
With world record holder Paula Radcliffe having withdrawn from the 2008 race, Ethiopian Gete Wami will attempt to win her first London Marathon. Wami is unlikely to dominate in the same way Radcliffe has in her three London wins, but the women's race could be extremely close with fellow Ethiopian Berhane Adere, the quickest in the field, on the roster as well.

The organizers of the Flora London Marathon had to approach the six Masai warriors who will be running in London on Sunday about a "delicate" matter. The solution came from M&S in the form of cotton stretch pants worn under the warriors traditional attire.
 
   Maasai team opens marathon event (BBC News)
Six Maasai warriors from northern Tanzania plan to run the 2008 London Marathon to raise money to provide safe drinking water in Elaui, their village in eastern Africa. Known for their known for their running abilities and traditional diet featuring blood and milk, the Maasai will also carry sticks and sing while running. Greenforce, an aid organisation which has been working with the Maasai since 2005, organized their participation in the marathon.

   Britain suits Maasai marathon warriors to a tea (Telegraph)
Clare Martin of Cooling, Kent and the mother of 3 is the host family for the six Maasai warriors. The warrior have never before left their tiny Tanzanian village of Eluai and have settled in today with mugs of sugar-packed tea and seem to be addicted to the Brittish "cuppa"
