   Indiana's Mescal wins Andrew Jackson marathon (Jacson Sun)
With about six miles to go, Indiana's Jeff Mescal believed he could run a personal best marathon and win the race. His time of 2 hours 45 minutes and 32 seconds was nearly 7 minutes ahead of a fading Josh Hite from Cookeville Tennessee.

   High hopes dashed as Sell fades, finishes 14th in Boston Marathon (Detroit Free Press)
Brain Sell had his worst Boston finished in the eight years he has been training with the Hansons-Brooks Distance Project. His 2 hour 16 minute and 31 second finish time was still good enough for 14th place.

   Van Dyk wins eighth Boston Marathon (The Times)
Ernst van Dyk of South Africa won his eighth Boston Marathon in 1 hour 33 minutes and 29 seconds on Monday. van Dyk was nearly 2 kilometers ahead of Japans Masazumi Soejima when he crossed the finish line.
 
   Merga makes up for Olympic fade with Boston Marathon win (The Star)
Eithiopia's Deriba Merga redeemed himself from his Olympic Marathon fade by winning the 2009 edition of the Boston Marathon defeating a rising American star in Ryan Hall who would finish third.

Dire Tune was transported to the hospital after a late race surge in the Boston Marathon that would earn her second place by one second, the closest margin of victory in the 113 year history of the Boston Marathon
 
   De Reuck masters the Boston Marathon course (Boston Globe)
Colleen De Reuck, a mother of two, ran an amazingly strong Boston Marathon on Monday. The 45-year old and four-time Olympian ran a time of 2 hours 35 minutes and 37 seconds to win the masters division of the race and finishing in eighth place overall.

   Goucher’s Boston Marathon Finish: A Real Endorsement (CNBC)
Kara Goucher faded to third place in the final few hundred meters of the Boston Marathon. She was there in large part to the Nike Orgon Project. Winning might have been the largest endorsement for the "swoosh" logo company.

   Cheruiyot, Tune eventually wither in weather (The Boston Globe)
Three time Boston Marathon, and defending, champion Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot could not withstand the weather and a nagging back problem that would cause the hopeful winner to drop out of the marathon near the 25 kilometer mark. He and the women's defending champion, Dire Tune, who would finish second in the women's race by one second, were both taken to the hospital.
 
   Best showing for U.S. in Boston Marathon since 1985 (Los Angeles Times)
Ryan Hall of Big Bear and Kara Goucher of Portland finished third in the male open and female open category of the Boston Marathon. The best finish for Americans in the Boston Marathon since 1985.

The Eugene Marathon, slated for May 3rd, is expecting more than seven thousand runners. Race director Richard Maher said that there are ten countries and forty-three states represented in this years field.

   Sales of Marathon goods still strong (Boston Globe)
With the US economy still hurting, consumers were still spending their money at the three-day John Hancock Sports and Fitness Expo preceding the 2009 Boston Marathon, some purchasing once in a lifetime Boston Marathon memorabilia. Expo sales projections comes on the heels of the biggest drop in US consumer spending in twenty-eight years at the end of 2008. 26,400 registered participants also have been stimulating the economy paying the $110 race registration fee and $250 per night for a hotel room.

   Engle breaks the tape at Charlottesville Marathon (Daily Progress)
Chuck Engle of Dublin Ohio had something to prove Saturday at the Charlottesville Marathon. He finished second in 2006 after battling for much of the race only to fade over the heat and hills. He came back to run the course in 2 hours 38 minutes and 57 seconds to cruise to a nearly ten minute victory.
 
 GO! St. Louis Marathon
  Post-Race Review/ Results
   Marathoners set course records at Go! St. Louis Marathon (St. Louis Dispatcher)
Zac Freudenburg and Megan Earney set course records at the Go! St. Louis Marathon in muddier than usual conditions. Freudenberg won in a 2:23:57, beating defending champion two-time winner two-time winner and former men's record holder Karl Gilpin by almost three minutes. 2:51:20, breaking the women's course record of 2:52:38 set in 2007 by Christine Ensign.

   Brian Sell hopes to repeat 2006 feat (Detroit Free Press)
In his first big marathon following the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Brian Sell is aiming for a 2:10 finish. Sell, feeling fit, knows that a fourth place finish may be difficult in a deep field, but looks forward to a strong finish. Hansons-Brooks Distance Project has a number of other runners participating in the marathon as well - Luke Humphrey, Todd Snyder, Kyle O'Brien, Fred Joslyn and Pat Rizzo.

 Ozark Mountain Marathon and Ultramarathon (50K)

   Oates, Vest win their first Mountain Marathon (Cumberland-Times News)
Doug Oates did not expect to win the Mountain Marathon; but he did in 2:44:04. Kim Vest won the women's race in 3:28:04. More than 480 participants from thirteen states and the District of Columbia registered for the event.
 
 Vienna City Marathon
  Post-Race Review/ Results
   Kirwa triumphs in Vienna City Marathon (The Standard)
Gilbert Kirwa won the unique debutants only Vienna City Marathon in Austria in a 2:08:81. Dereje Tulu was second in 2:09:25 while Joseph Maregu was third in 2:09:25. Andrea Mayr won the women’s race in 2:30:43, beating Ethiopian pair, Derbe-Godana Gebissa (2:31:31) and Hayato-Zeineba Hasso (2:34:01) who were in second and third respectively.

The Andrew Jackson Marathon is the oldest marathon in Tennessee. The April 18th event held at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee will use the proceeds to support child abuse prevention. The marathon kicks of at 7 am.

Haile Gebrselassie holds the fastest marathon time in the world at 2 hours 3 minutes and 59 seconds. There is an advantage by training at altitude and he suggest ignoring the pain late in the race.
 
 Salt Lake City Marathon

Bill Cobler will be running his sixth Salt Lake City Marathon. He has run all of them and started running marathons at the age of 12. Only his first Salt Lake Marathon was over three hours and he has the fastest average time of any runner haveing done the previous five marathons.

With less than 24 hours to go before the popular Salt Lake City Marathon kicks off, race organizers are having a race of their own to secure the proper permits to even hold the event.

Lorraine Moller won the Boston Marathon in 1984 and was the only woman to run in each of the first four women's Olympic Marathon races, claiming the bronze medal in 1992 at 37 years of age.

The small town of Hopkinton will be flooded with runners for the start of the 113th Boston Marathon. The city accrues about thirty-five to fifty thousand dollars in expenses by hosting the starting line. The B.A.A. reimburses the town sixty-eight thousand to cover the costs.
