   Ficker Runs U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials (Inside Triathlon)
Top Ironman triathlete Desiree Ficker, 31, finished 79th of 124 finishers and 148 entries at the 2008 U.S. Women’s Olympic Marathon Trials in Boston April 20. She finished second at the Ironman world championship in Kona in 2006. She ran the marathon in 2 hours, 48 minutes and 11 seconds. Her time on the multi-lap trials course was 18 minutes slower than the U.S. trials winner Deena Kastor and roughly equal to the time Lance Armstrong ran on the traditional Boston Course

   Top American male had a buddy nipping at his heels Boston marathon (Free Press)
Nick Arciniaga and Pat Rizzo had trained with Team Hanson in Rochester Hills for the 08 edition of the Boston Marathon. A winter day running left Rizzo with a serious head wound after being struck by an out of control vehicle. His reason for finishing Boston, much more starting Boston, was to meet Arciniaga at the finish line.

   Houston Marathon raises $1.2M for charity (Houston Business Journal)
Participants in the Chevron Houston Marathon have raised more than $1 million for charity for the first time in the events history. The January 13 race generated $1.26 million for 45 charities as part of Run for a Reason, the event's fund-raising program. The total shows a 48 percent increase over the $852,000 raised last year.

   Gebrselassie explains withdrawal from Olympic marathon in Beijing (China View)
Ethiopia's world marathon record holder Haile Gebrselassie explained the reason for hnot running the 2008 Beijing Olympics is due to his desire to beat his standing world record at the 2008 Berlin Marathon on September 28. Gebrselassie broke the world record at the 2007 Berlin Marathon with a 2:04:26 finish. He has vowed to attend the Olympics even if he does not qualify for the men's 10,000 meters race.

   Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon Half Full (Star Tribune)
The October 5th Twin Cities marathon has more than 50 percent of the 11,000 spots available for the 2008 running already gone and the race could fill in record time, officials say. Race registration is well ahead of last year even with the additional 500 spots allocated this year.

   Vienna Marathon goes to grass (Weiner Zietung)
The 25th Vienna City Marathon is next Sunday and the day before the marathon, a football field will be laid down for athletes running the marathon so that a 13 meter wide stretch of grass will become the finishing straight for the 20,000 plus runners expected to turn out for the event.

Defending champion Robert Cheruiyot of Kenya won his fourth Boston Marathon on Monday in 2 hours and 7 minutes running the 6th fastest time over the rugged Boston course. Ethiopia's Dire Tune finished first in the women's race in the closest dual in Boston's 112 year history. Cheruiyot, the first Kenyan man to win four Boston Marathons after victories in 2003, 2006 and 2007
 
   Van Dyk Wins Wheelchair Race of 2008 Boston Marathon (Trans World)
Ernst Van Dyk won in the men's wheelchair race of the 2008 Boston Marathon in 1 hour and 26 minutes and 48 seconds. The native South African has won seven of the last eight Marathons. This year, Van Dyk led from start to finish to win Boston which he failed to do so last when he lost to Japan's Masazumi Soejima

   Lance Armstrong Tackles "Heartbreak Hill" (Showbuzz)
Race veterans told Lance Armstrong, the 7 time Tour de France champion, that he hill are not that bad. "They were wrong," said Armstrong, who finished 496th in 2:50:58. "They are harder, and they do come at a difficult time in the race."

   Marathon star Tergat to skip Beijing Olympics (CNN)
Former marathon world record-holder Paul Tergat will not run at Beijing Olympics for several reasons. The 38-year-old Kenyan cited a lack of fitness following four months in the military. Tergat, who held the marathon record from 2003-2007, wants to give younger runners a chance at the Olympic Games.

   Oaklander on Olympic Marathon Team (SanFrancisco Chronicle)
Magdalena Lewy Boulet secured a spot on the Olympic team Sunday in the U.S. Olympic women's marathon trials in Boston. Lewy Boulet, a 34-year-old Oakland resident and an assistant coach on the Cal track and field team, did the hard work in the first half of the race over a loop course and finished second in a personal best of 2 hours, 30 minutes, 12 seconds to earn the trip to Beijing in August to represent the U.S. of A in the 2008 Olympic Games.

   Victory No. 4 for Cheruiyot as Tune prevails in a thriller (IAAF)
The 112th running of the Boston Marathon cemented Robert Cheruiyot’s place in the record books with his fourth win in 2:07:46. And the women’s race also held something for posterity as it showcased the closest women’s finish in the history of Boston, Dire Tune’s two second victory over Alevtina Biktimarova (2:25:25 to 2:25:27). Cheruiyot, despite his win, has no such guarantee for an Olympic berth at the Beijing Games. In an increased prize pot of $796,000 for the race, $150,000 each went to the men’s and women’s winner.

   Police say Marathon runner tried to kill wife (MetroWest Daily News)
Hours after he finished the Boston Marathon, South Korean Kim Yong Sik tried to kill his wife by stepping on her throat and choking her in the parking lot of the Sheraton Framingham. motivations for the attack are unknown as neither Sik nor his wife speak English. Sik who finished the race in 5:28:20 was scheduled to leave for New York and then return to South Korea; but will be detained due to his June court date.

According to BEMS chief Richard Serino, his department considers events like the Boston Marathon and the Fourth of July celebration as "planned disasters". They are safe, controlled environments that present "an opportunity to test some things you would never want to test in a real disaster." Monday's Boston Marathon will make for a great test of the emergency evacuation routes for the city.

   Woman has eyes on Beijing berth (Star Tribune)
Michelle Lilienthal graduated from Wisconsin in 2005 and took a few years off from running. Her come back in 2006 in the Twin Cities Marathon earned her a spont at the starting line of the 2008 Olympic Marathon Trials for the women with a time of 2 hour and 35 minutes. She will be the sixth fastest woman in the field.

   Kipchumba leads Kenyan sweep at Belgrade Marathon (International Herald Tribune)
The twenty-first edition of the Belgrade Marathon greeted runners with 70 degree temperatures on a dry day. The Kenyans seemed to enjoy the weather as the swept the top 3 over all places. Kipchumba finished in 2 hours, 14 minutes, 3 seconds. Jonathan Kipsaina was second in 2:16.14, ahead of Victor Mangusho Robert with 2:16.47. Natalia Chatkina of Belorussia won the women's race in 2:46.24.

   Marathon Maniac Weimer knows his way around Boston Marathon (The Leader-Post)
Having run over 70 marathons since 2001, Weimer is proudly considered to be a Marathon Maniac and will be running th 112th Boston Marathon on Monday in his Marathon Maniac T-shirt. His time of 3 hours, 33 minutes and 31 seconds at the St. George's Marathon in Utah was his qualifying race which will allow him to line up with just over 20,000 other marathon runners on Monday in Hopkinton for the start.

Monday marks the 112th Boston Marathon and things should go on normal for most experienced runners. But Monday will be the second day of the Jewish holiday of Passover. This means that obeying their religious rules will make it difficult to eat the most common meal of carbohydrates including breads and pasta.

Nearly 2,500 participants have signed up for the Brisbane Marathon. The overall numbers are up nearly 50 percent over last years numbers. The 13th annual marathon will host people in age from 18 to 80.

   Mongolia and China take marathon honours - Beijing Olympic test events continue (IAAF)
Chinese and Japanese 2008 Olympic Marathon team entrants tested themselves in a road race created to showcase the 2008 Beijing Olympic marathon course. The men’s race featured Atsushi Sato (JPN), Tsuyoshi Ogata (JPN), Ren Longyun (CHN), Han Gang (CHN) and silver medalist from the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, Lee Bong Ju (AUS). The women's race featured Zhou Chunxiu (CHN), Zhu Xiaolin (CHN), Reiko Tosa (JPN) and Mara Yamauchi (GBR). Though the race produced few fast times, it was key in helping China stage the best marathon possible and giving the athletes a glimpse into what's to come on Olympic marathon race day.

With a time of 6 hours 56 minutes and 57 seconds Michael Wardian won the Mad City 100 kilometer race last weekend by more than 17 minutes. With his ankle black and blue from an accident in the race, he will toe the line at the 112th running of the Boston Marathon.

Grandma's Marathon put together and online auction and raised $2,750 for the family of Kenya's Wesly Ngetich. Ngetich was caught in between two ethnic groups fighting near his home town in January and a stray arrow took his life.

The 2004 Olympic Marathon Gold Medalist, Stefano Baldini played down Beijing's notorious pollution and expressed his concern about the stand-off between the Chinese Government and Tibetans. Baldini added that the political strife was distracting and the he wants to focus on his training to defend his Olympic Title

   Kenyan event at Hopkinton school canceled (MetroWest Daily News)
Elmwood Elementary School has held a tradition in Hopkinton of greeting Kenyan runners for the Boston Marathon for the past 15 years. The event was canceled when several outbreaks of Chicken Pox were reported in two separate schools, the lead sponsor, John Hancock Insurance and Financial Services canceled the event yesterday at the advice of its medical advisers and the state Department of Public Health.

   Boston Marathon - Cheruiyot, Grigoryeva return to defend titles (The Sports Network)
The rain and windy conditions in last year's Boston marathon did not impede Kenya's Robert Cheruiyot and Russia's Lidiya Grigoryeva from running times of 2:14:13 and 2:29:18, respectively. The times were the slowest winning times since 1985. The two champions will return to defend their titles on April 21st.
