   United States Air Force Marathon volunteer registration begins Friday (Greene County Dailies)
Friday May 1st marks the beginning of volunteer registration for the 13th Annual Air Force Marathon which takes place on September 19. Volunteers for the approximately ten-thousand person race will number in the two-thousand person range. Race events include a 5K, 10K, half-marathon and marathon.

   Runners Face Windy Conditions in Big Sur Marathon (KION)
The tough course at the Big Sur Marathon in Carmel was made even more difficult by strong winds that plagued runners over the 26.2 mile course. Ryan Hafer was the overall top performer with a time of 2 hours 32 minutes and 17 seconds.
 
   Hafer wins men's race; Coordt takes women's at Big Sur marathon (The Salinas Californian)
Ryan Hafer crossed the finish line first at the Disney World Marathon last year. With no chip on his shoe, he recorded no official time. At the Big Sur Marathon he was sure to have his chip firmly attached as he was the first across the finish line with the slowest winning time since the inaugural marathon.

A few hours after her credible, if not frustrating, third place finish at the 113th Boston Marathon, Kara Goucher was reportedly trying to persuade her coach to let her enter the London Marathon with less than 5 days of rest.
 
   Orillia runner sets world mark in Boston Marathon (National Post)
Rick Ball set a world mark for single-leg amputees competing with the able-bodied competitors at the 113th Boston Marathon on Monday. He bested Amy Winters Mark by more than two minutes. Richard Whitehead, a double leg amputee, holds the world mark with a time of 2 hours 57 minutes.

The 2009 edition of the famed Chicago Marathon closed its doors to further registrations having reached its capacity of 45,000 runners for the October 11 race. Last year 31,343 runners finished the 26.2 mile distance.

   The Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon has a new name (Cincinati Enquirer)
Procter & Gamble has entered into a major sponsorship agreement with the Cincinati Flying Pig Marathon. The 26.2 mile race, which is now powered by P&G, will stamp it's logo all over the course and through the weekend events.

   Overcoming barriers, Cleveland Marathon officials settle on May 17 race course (Cleveland Sports)
The Cleveland Marathon has settled on an updated course for the May 17th marathon. Vision Event Management has adjusted the course so that the typically long stretch just past mile 13 will head east on Marginal Road toward University Circle and hopefully allow runners the opportunity to run with the wind and give them a little extra push.

   Eugene marathon organizers take precautions against swine flu. (KMTR)
The Eugene Marathon will only pass out pre-packaged gel for refueling the five-thousand runners from forty-five states that will participate in the running events on the weekend. Eight doctors and twenty-five nurses will be on hand to monitor runners with bio-hazard kits that offer a chemical that kills the swine flu.

Nearly 2000 runners participated in the 2009 Glass City Marathon in Toledo, Ohio. Matt Folk, the pre-race favorite from Oregon,Ohio took overall honors in the men's marathon with a time of 2 hours and 31 minutes.

Alfred Debono set a new record for the over sixty marathon at the Zurich Marathon on Sunday. His time of 3 hours 1 minute and 6 seconds was his second national record. He also holds the half-marathon record of 1 hour 25 minutes and 25 seconds.

   Danny Fisher wins Kentucky Derby Marathon (The Courier-Journal)
Danny Fisher, 26, of Columbus Indiana won the Kentucky Derby Festival with a time of 2 hours 41 minutes and 32 seconds. Ryan Althaus was nearly 3 minutes behind Fisher to claim second place.

   Expect Traffic Delays Sunday for La Crosse Marathon (WKBT)
This weekend marks the inaugural La Crosse Marathon and race organizers are hoping that drivers are aware of detours that the race will cause in traffic patterns. The marathon race begins at 8 am on Sunday with police and volunteers in place to help direct the traffic.

Thirty-one years ago nearly 400 runners ran the first Lincoln Marathon. Last week the race reached capacity with six-thousand, five-hundred runners. Nancy Sutton, race director, decided to cap the event last year when 100 runners signed up the day before the event.

Major Phil Packer, 36, was told the he would never walk again after being paralyzed during a rocket attack while stationed in Iraq. He will complete the London Marathon at the pace of about 2 miles an hour while raising money for the charity Help for Heroes.

   Wanjiru outlasts Kebede in record time at London Marathon (The Independent)
While the London Marathon officials were hoping for a world marathon mark that would best Haile Gebrselassie's time of 2 hours 3 minutes and 59 seconds, they would settle for the fastest time run in London by Sammy Wanjiru. Wanjiru clocked a time of 2 hours 5 minutes and 10 seconds which bested Martin Lel's course record time.
 
   Wanjiru wins, Mikitenko Repeats in London Marathon (Sky Sports)
Sammy Wanjiru set a fierce pace and would take the overall title in the London Marathon with a new course record of 2 hours 5 minutes and 10 seconds. Irinia Mikitenko would take her second consecutive women's overall London Marathon title.
