 Belfast City Marathon

   Four Former Champions to Race In Belfast Marathon (Athletic Association of Ireland)
John Mutai and Marashet Jumma, champions of the men's and women's races, will be returning to defending their titles at the 2008 Belfast Marathon. The marathon has had a record entry of 15,000 participants in the various events.

   Not So Fast: Marathon Runner Catches Up To Thief (WCCO)
Mark Laliberte, a hospital worker in St. Paul, walked by a coffee shop where two men were robbing the register. Laliberte wrestled one suspect near the entrance and chased the man a few blocks wearing only one shoe. The second perpetrator got away.

   Holyoke Marathon always looks ahead (The Republican)
The Holyoke Marathon is the only marathon in the region, typically drawing approximately one hundred runners, mostly from the Northeast. It ranks as the tenth oldest marathon in the country and nineteenth oldest in the world. Winning times for the 2007 race were a 2:46:09 by Mike Shapiro in the men's race and a 3:39:03 by Sarah Shapiro in the woman's race.
 
 Pocono Mountain Run For The Red Marathon

   Marathon effort well worth it (Pocono Record)
The "Run for the Red" Pocono Marathon, now in its third year, gives the entire Pocono community a chance to support their friends and neighbors through this worthy agency's relief fund as the proceeds goes to the American Red Cross of Monroe County. The Red Cross performs important duties in fulfilling its mission to serve victims of disasters and emergencies. Recent years have hit the agency's funds hard.
 
   Marathon depends on its helpers (Pocono Record)
Run for the Red marathon relies on volunteers. With about four hundred volunteers this year, there are fifteen to twenty people at each water stop alone. Many volunteers have come back year after year.
 
   Three elite runners entered in Run for the Red Marathon (Pocono Record)
Defending Champion Justin Gillette will be running the 2008 Run for the Red Pocono Marathon. Gillette will be joined by 2006 champion Solomon Too and US Olympic Trials participant Michael Wardian. Race director Bob Werts said there were over three hundred ninety entrants, with another two hundred signed up for the 5K event.

 Cayman Islands Marathon

   Cayman Islands Marathon of a Promotion (CayCompass)
Cayman Islands Marathon has been busy promoting their marathon which takes place at the end of the year. Grand Cayman is ideal for running because of its flat terrain, making the course a fast one and the Jazz Festival will coincide with race weekend. All proceeds from the marathon go to the Cayman Islands Cadet Corps and the Cayman Islands Cancer Society.

   Fargo Marathon to reach 10,000 (InForum)
The Fargo Marathon will reach 10,000 entries by the end of the week for its various running events. It was only three years ago when race organizers wondered if they would get 1,000 people. Because of the high numbers, race director Mark Knutson is concerned about the lead marathon runners encountering a logjam of back-of-the-pack half marathon entrants.

   With continent's legends gathered, African Athletics Hall of Fame launched in Addis Ababa (IAAF)
An array of distinguished African athletics talent had been assembled to launch a hall of fame marking the continent’s rich history - from the son of Abebe Bikila, through the likes of Kip Keino, Miruts Yifter and Frankie Fredericks, to present-day stars such as Meseret Defar, Tirunesh Dibaba and Haile Gebrselassie. To qualify for the Hall of Fame athletes had to fit one or more of three categories: Olympic gold medalist, World champion, or World record breaker. Among the other leading athletes present were: Mohamed Gammoudi, Tunisia’s 1968 Olympic 5000m champion; Kenya’s John Ngugi, 1988 Olympic 5000m gold medallist and five times World Cross Country champion; Abdi Bile, Somalia’s 1987 World 1500m champion; Derartu Tulu, Ethiopia’s 1992 and 2000 Olympic 5000m champion; Maria Mutola, Mozambique’s triple World and 2000 Olympic 800m champion.
 
   Ngerem writes off Abuja City Marathon (Vanguard Online)
Federation of Nigeria president, Dan Ngerem has urged promoters of the Abuja City Marathon to think twice about their quest to run a full course marathon in the Federal Capital Territory, otherwise they will make Nigeria suffer damage to her international image. Ngerem said that Abuja was not conducive to run a 42km marathon adding the timing was also wrong as no serious world champion would want to come to Abuja and receive a chicken feed prize money.

   Tom Cruise follows in wife Katie Holmes' trainers and takes up running (Daily Mirror)
Tom Cruise has caught the running bug since watching wife Katie Holmes runt he New York City Marathon in 2007. He has decided that he wants to run the Boston Marathon and has been hitting the treadmill every day since determined to record a better time than Holmes. Holmes completed her marathon in 5:29.
 
 North Carolina Marathon

   Runners Prepare For North Carolina Marathon In Greensboro (Digitriad.com)
About a thousand runners have registered to run in this weekend's marathon in Greensboro. Organizers expect three thousand to five thousand people to participate at the finish line celebration. The marathon is part of Greensboro's Bicentennial Celebration. Organizers hope to make it an annual event.

   Kenyans Kogo & Ndereba Featured in Lilac Bloomsday Run (Race Results Weekly)
Micah Kogo, John Korir, Gilbert Okari and Moses Kigen headline the men's race and Catherine Ndereba and Genoveva Jelagat Kigen will headline the women's race at the 2008 Lilac Bloomsday Run.

   Twin Cities Marathon field already seventy five percent full (Star Tribune)
Only 2,500 spots remain for the 2008 Twin Cities Marathon. Registration began April 18 and the field of 11,000 participants is expected to fill this week. Chicago Marathon has already filled.

 Big Sur International Marathon

   Weather makes marathon magic in Big Sur (Monterey Herald)
Andy Martin won the 2008 Big Sur Marathon in a 2:29:50 much to the upset of runner-up Jesus Campos. Campos, a twenty-three year old local, tried for a second time to become the first runner from Monterey County to win the marathon in its twenty three year history; but came in thirty seconds after Martin. Kris Lawson won the women's race in a 3:00.53.
 
   Martin wears Big Sur crown (The Californian)
Andy Martin won the 2008 Big Sur International Marathon. With the fastest personal best marathon time of any runner in the field of 4,500 at 2:20, Martin finished in 2:29.50 followed by Jesus Campos thirty one second later. Campos was trying to become the first runner from Monterey County to win the BSIM in its twenty three year history. Kris Lawson won the women's title with a time of 3:00.53.

   An inside look at the Colorado Marathon (The Coloradoan)
The Colorado Marathon on May 4, 2008 was started by Fort Collins running buddies Jon Sinclair and Steve Cathcart and draws more than 2,500 participants. Modeled after the St. George Marathon in Utah, the race organizers have set a fast scenic course in Poudre Canyon in fort Collins, Colorado. The race barely makes money, but any proceeds go to the Northern Colorado Running Foundation, which is a running advocate organization.

   Free shuttle bus to starting line of Eugene Marathon (KVAL)
Lane Transit District will operate free shuttle buses with direct service to the starting area of the 2008 Eugene Marathon at Hayward Field. The shuttles will provide marathoners with the opportunity to leave their cars at the finish area and catch a ride to Hayward Field. Marathoners are encouraged to take the earliest possible shuttle to ensure that all participants are at the starting line before race time. In addition, marathoners may ride any LTD bus route during the day just by showing their “bib” or race number.

   ABB to sponsor Houston marathon team event (Houston Business Journal)
ABB Group will sponsor a new team competition at the 2009 Chevron Houston Marathon. The ABB Team Challenge will consist of three divisions made up of between three and six members who can run in either the marathon, half-marathon or in an open division with at least one team member running in all three events, including the 5K.

   Documentary Looks At Legend Of NYC Marathon Founder (NY1)
A documentary paying tribute to New York City Marathon founder founder, Fred Lebow, details his life as a Jewish immigrant from Transylvania who left a lasting impact on New York City and the sport of running and his creation of the New York Road Runners. Despite the city's financial troubles in the 1970s, Lebow managed to secure funding for the marathon, which quickly became an annual event. His message was that anyone and everyone can run, but beyond that anyone can accomplish a goal.

   Record Holder Ritzenhein to Defend Healthy Kidney 10-K Title (Race Results Weekly)
Dathan Ritzenhein who is representing the U.S. Men's Olympic Team in the Marathon at the Beijing Games will return to New York City to defend his title at the Healthy Kidney 10K. In 2007 Ritzenhein set a course record in his victory earning a special bonus of $20,000, motivating him to donate his $7,500 first place prize money to the National Kidney Foundation. This will be the first race for Ritzenhein since USA Cross-Country Nationals due to a lingering soreness in his foot which had him withdraw from Cross-Country World Championships in Edinburgh and New York Road Runners Central Park Challenge.
 
 Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon

   On the run: Life, hope on display at marathon (NewsOK.com)
People are already preparing for the ninth Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon to be held in April 2009. Runners such as this year's men's and women's winners, Nathan Adams and Jennifer Graef came from out of state to participate in the race.
 
 Trestle Valley Marathon

   At the Trestle Valley Marathon (KFVR-TV North Dakota)
Over four hundred runners and walkers braved the cold temps and high winds to run in the 2008 Trestle Valley Marathon. The men`s full marathon winner was defending champion Greg Worley in a time of 2:42. Meg Grindall won the women`s race in 3:18. Both Worley and Grindall set new course records.
 
 Vienna City Marathon

   2:07:38 course record for Kirui, Talpos defends (IAAF)
Kenyans swept the 2008 Vienna City Marathon taking the first eight places at the race, the victor, Abel Kirui, setting the course record in 2:07:38. Two more runners finished inside 2:09: Duncan Kibet was second in his debut with 2:08:33 while Paul Biwott ran 2:08:53. In the women's race defending champion Luminita Talpos won in 2:26:43, the third fastest ever in the history of the race and Tomo Morimoto was second with 2:29:01 and Beatrice Omwanza was third in 2:37:36.

 Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon

   Korir cruises to victory in miniMarathon (Louisville Courier Journal)
While Wesley Korir, former University of Louisville cross country All-American, won the Derby Festival miniMarathon in 1:05:18; Kenyan marathon runner Hilary Lelei won the marathon in in 2:21:31, while Charles Kiplagat was second in 2:22:50 and Birhanu Wukaw third in 2:28:32. In the women's race Nadezhda Tuptova won the marathon in 2:48:02 and Larisa Mikhaylova was runner-up just 15 seconds behind. Debbie Arzola came in third with a 2:56:13.
 
 Marathon des Sables

   Marathon runner tests endurance, aids nonprofits (Baltimore Sun)
T. Rowe Price fund manager Jeff Arricale tackled the 2008 Marathon des Sables, a 156-mile ultramarathon in the Sahara Desert. Arnicale ran on behalf of Arricale chose Special Olympics Maryland for its local connection and Opportunity International because of his finance background and the potential for microfinance loans to lift poor people out of poverty. He raised about $49,000, almost half way to his goal of $100,000.
 
 Marathon Hamburg

   Mandago and Timofeyeva impress at Hamburg Marathon (IAAF)
David Mandago was the men’s winner of the 2008 Hamburg Marathon in a 2:07:23 while Irina Timofeyeva won the the women’s race setting a course record in 2:24:14. Almost twenty runners in the men's race had reached the half way mark in 1:03:17, but Mandago broke away at the 35K mark to win.
 
 Rock 'n' Roll Country Music Marathon

   Chebii and Ponomarenko take Country Music Marathon victories (IAAF)
Kenya’s Sylvester Chebii won the 2008 Country Music Marathon in a time of 2:14:27. In the women’s race, Svetlana Ponomarenko outkicked defending champion Olena Shurkhno to win in 2:30:33.
 
 Rock 'n' Roll Madrid Marathon
  Post-Race Review/ Results
   Martínez takes first career Marathon victory in Madrid (IAAF)
José Manuel Martínez won the 2008 Madrid Marathon in 2:12:42 shutting out Kenya’s Frederick Cherono who was second in 2:13.42. Kenyan Abraham Keter was in third in 2:14.48. In the women's race Kenyan Rael Kiyara Kguriatukei and Ethiopia’s Derartu Tulu battled it out with Kiyara Kguriatukei winning in 2:36.15.
