 Blue Nose International Marathon

   Busy week ahead for race director of Blue Nose Marathon (Nove Scotia News)
Joachim Stroink, race director of the Blue Nose Marathon, expects seven thousand participants to the 2008 event. The Halifax businessman has been the volunteer race director for five years in which he watched the event grow. 2008 marks his last year in the role as he wants to focus with the charity with the Learning Disabilities Association which have helped his two children who have dyslexia and attention deficit disorder.

   Cleveland could better promote its Rite Aid marathon (The Plain Dealer)
The 2008 Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon is one of the oldest races in the country, but runner participation has been dwindling. Some blame this on regions focus on football, baseball and basketball while others attribute the low profile to the race's own personnel and lack of marketing to the community and elsewhere. The race has heard these complaints and is unveiling a new course for it's thirty-first event.

   Rothesay runner third in Fredericton Marathon (Telegraph Journal)
In his third marathon, Travis Saunders won the thirtieth Fredericton Marathon in a time of 2:43:34 beating 2006 champion Len Falkenstein by ten minutes. Falkenstein followed in 2:53 and Bruce Rosvall was third in a 2:55:53. Janice Ashworth, competing in her first marathon, won in a 3:06:27. Daun Lynch and Maggie Johnson rounded out the top three for women with times of 3:14:14 and 3:21:03 respectively.

   Great Wall Marathon greatest challenge (icWales)
Karl Baynham has run in New York and London but the fifty-one year old London taxi driver plans to take on the famous Great Wall Marathon. Baynham is running to raise funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust following the death of his friend's daughter. He has run two New York City Marathons and four London Marathons.

   Security slows foreign runners for Cellcom Green Bay Marathon (Green Bay Press Gazette)
With civil unrest in Kenya and stricter visa rules, race organizers bringing in foreign elite athletes are meeting with some difficulty. Visas which are necessary to enter the United States require extensive documentation and often mean interviews at the embassies and the process can become lengthier with increased security concerns. The delay places a strain on both the runners and on organizers, who aren't sure how many hotel rooms they need to reserve or arrangements they must make.

   Marathon Ace Goumri Added to Healthy Kidney 10-K (Race Results Weekly)
With the withdrawal of U.S.A. Olympic medal hopeful, Dathan Ritzenhein, New York Road Runner's Healthy Kidney 10-K race announces the entry of top marathoner Abderrahim Goumri. Goumri who finished third at the 2008 London Marathon in a course record time of 2:05:30, holds Morocco's 10,000m record of 27:02.62.
 
   In final Beijing tune-up, Noguchi take Sendai Half Marathon title (IAAF)
Defending Olympic Marathon champion Mizuki Noguchi won the 18th Sendai Half Marathon on Sunday clocking 1:08:25. Noguchi used the half marathon as a confidence builder and to test her physical and mental capabilities. Kenyan Harun Njoroge won the men's race in a 1:01:55.

   I'll wear mask to beat the Beijing Olympic smog, reveals Radcliffe (The Scotsman)
Marathon World Record holder Paula Radcliffe admitted she may wear a face mask at the Beijing Olympics this summer, but not while competing. Athletes are expecting heavy pollution along with heat and humidity at the 2008 Beijing Games. Radcliffe is mainly concerned with keeping her asthma in check.

   Madaí Pérez to lead Mexican Marathon team in Beijing (IAAF)
Following her win at the 30K Mexican Olympic Trials, Madaí Pérez, will lead the Mexican team in the 2008 Olympic Games. Pérez, who holds a personal best of 2:22:59 from her fourth place finish in Chicago 2006. Patricia Rétiz, 37, won the 2008 LALA Marathon, the country’s top marathon, which usually serves as the national championships and qualifier for the World Championships and Olympic Games; but the Mexican Athletics Federation decided to hold a 30km qualifying race with similar weather conditions athletes would find this summer in Beijing.

   Marathon runners are all in the family (Casper Star Tribune)
Della Works, seventy two years of age, her daughter, Barbara Bosco and granddaughter, Nicole Bosco completed the 2008 Walt Disney World Marathon. This is the fourth marathon Works and Bosco have run with her mother.
 
 Green Bay Marathon

   3 charities look forward to Greenbay marathon race day (GreenBay Press Gazette)
This year's charities are the Green Bay Boys and Girls Club, the Red Cross Lakeland Chapter and The Salvation Army of Brown County. These charity organizations won't just sit around and hope for money during the race, they will provide most of the 2,000 volunteers that it takes to organize and set up for the race. There will be well over 15 thousand dollars raised for the community organizations.

   Quebecers take home top honours in Mississauga Marathon (The Mississauga News)
Nathalie Goyer, of St. Bruno Quebec, was the first women to cross the finish line during the 5th annual Mississauga Marathon. Goyer completed the run early Sunday morning in 2:53:20. Terry Gehl of St. Charles, Quebec, was the first to cross the finish line at 2:28.28.

   Mother's Day Run a tune-up for marathon and possible Olympic run (Calgary Herald)
Nathan Kendrick, former University of Calgary distance specialist-turned marathon runner, is gearing up for the ING Ottawa Marathon, a qualifier for Canada's representatives at the 2008 Summer Olympics. He has used the 31st annual Sport Chek Mother's Day Run and Walk as a tune-up for the Ottawa Marathon. While the 2008 Beijing Olympics aren't totally out of the question, realistically he's aiming at the 2012 Summer Games in London.

   Mungara leads top five sweep for Kenya at Prague marathon (International Herald Tribune)
Kenneth Mburu Mungara won the 2008 Prague International Marathon in 2:11:06 followed by Eliah Sang in 2:12:15 and by Simon Njoroge Kariuki who was third in 2:13:24. In the women's race, Nailya Yulamanova successfully defended her title by winning in 2:31:43. Emily Kimuria in 2:35:55 and Caroline Kwambai in 2:37:51.
 
   Mungara, Yulamanova take Prague Marathon titles (IAAF)
Kenneth Mungara and defending champion Natalya Yulamanova braved warm temperatures to win the 2008 Prague Marathon. Mungara won in a 2:11:06 followed by Eliah Sang in 2:12:15 and Simon Njoroge Kariuki in 2:13:24, second and third respectively. Yulamanova won the women's race in 2:31:43.

   Danger wins 1st Lake Wobegon Trail Marathon (SC Times)
Paul Danger won the inaugural Lake Wobegon Trail marathon in a 2:47:36. Runner-up David Hartz finished in 3:04:01 and Stanley Hup was third in 3:17:02. Kalli Christen won the women's race in a 3:19:07.

   Radcliffe has unfinished business after triple failure (International Herald Tribune)
Paula Radcliffe, holder of several world, European and Commonwealth titles on the road, track and in cross country, is Britain's main hope of an athletics gold at the Beijing Olympics. A fifth place in the 1996 5,000 meters in Atlanta, fourth in the 10,000 four years later at Sydney and her painful failure to finish the marathon she was favorite to win in Athens in 2004 having set a world record in the marathon in an undefeated time of 2:15:25 and the subsequent early end to her 10,000 meters attempt. Radcliffe is back to claim the one title which has eluded her.

   Tacoma City Marathon sees growth (News Tribune)
Paul Morrison, co-director of the Tacoma City Marathon, expects about two thousand people participants in the second staging of the marathon event. Morrison and and fellow race director Tony Phillippi hope the event continues to grow in the coming years.

   Air Force Marathon officials spread word about upcoming event (Air Force Link)
Officials from the U.S. Air Force Marathon office made a stop at the Pentagon to increase awareness for the 2008 Air Force Marathon held at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. Race director, Molly Louden, believes 10,000 will register for the various running events. The events include a 26.2 mile marathon, a 13.1 mile half-marathon, a 10K individual and four-person team race and a family-friendly 5K the evening prior.
 
 Prague International Marathon

   Spring Marathon Season Comes to Close in Prague on Sunday (Race Results Weekly)
The 2008 Prague International Marathon is expecting over five thousand runners for the full marathon with an additional seven thousand in companion events, including an in-line skate. Heading the men's elite field are David Makori Omiti, who has a personal best time of 2:08:49 from Venice in 2002, Benjamin Pseret, winner of the Treviso Marathon last year in a personal best 2:10:18 and Kenneth Mungara, who ran 2:17:38 at high altitude in Nairobi in 2006. In the women's field two-time Prague champion Alina Ivanova who will be looking for a Czech Olympic berth.

   Registration deadline approaches for Potato marathon (Idaho Stateman)
Early registration closes Monday for the Famous Idaho Potato Marathon, which is celebrating its 30th year on Saturday, May 17. The marathon day includes a half marathon, 5 kilometer and 10 kilometer race.

   Dentist closes in on marathon milestone at Missaugua. (Globesports)
Rick Rayman, a dentist and the father of two and grandfather of three takes aim on the milestone of 200 complete marathons. Mississauga will be his 186th since 1978. He completed 16 in 2007. Rayman's most recent roadwork was the St. John's Waterloo marathon, April 27, in 4 hours 51 minutes.

   Marathon loser Pietri remembered as a giant (Guardian)
Dorando Pietri led the 1908 Olympic Marathon before staggering and stumbling and being helped across the finish line. A statue in his home town of Capri has been erected to commemorate the Italian runner who was the unofficial winner and then later disqualified for the aide he recieved.

   Injury Forces Ritzenhein Out of Healthy Kidney 10K (Race Results Weekly)
2008 U.S. Olympic Marathon Team athlete Dathan Ritzenhein has withdrawn from New York Road Runner's Healthy Kidney 10K race due to an injury to the third metatarsal of his left foot he had sustained at the 2008 Cross Country Championships earlier this year. Ritzenhein also suffered problems with his iliotibial band and hamstrings and had been taking anti-inflamatory medications for six months and will take the time to rest before the 10,000 meter trials in Eugene, Oregon in two months. Ritzenhein won the 10K race last year setting a course record in 28:07.2.

   Powerwalk on the Moonlit Marathon (Driffield Times)
Mary Jo Moore and Sharon Darlington, from Driffield, are taking part in the 11th Playtex MoonWalk on May 17. 15,000 walkers are expected to participate in the extraordinary moonlit marathon. The race starts and finishes in London's Hyde Park as participants walk in decorated bras, to raise money for Breast Cancer charities.

   Brazilian marathon runner De Lima set to miss Beijing (Reuters)
Vanderlei de Lima, the Brazilian runner who was famously attacked by a spectator while leading the marathon at the 2004 Olympics, is set to miss the Beijing Games because of a nagging injury to the back of his left thigh. De Lima, who went on to win the bronze medal in Athens, has been forced to pull out of Sunday's Prague marathon which is his last chance to qualify for the games. De Lima is extremely disappointed that he will be unable to defend his medal.
 
   Kenyan marathon star Wanjiru leaves for Japan to prepare for Beijing Olympics (Xinhua News)
World half marathon champion and runner-up in the 2008 London Marathon Samuel Wanjiru is expected to leave the country next week for Japan in order to start preparation for the Beijing Olympic Games. Wanjiru, London Marathon winner Martin Lel, Four Times Boston Marathon winner Robert Cheruiyot and Rotterdam Marathon winner William Kipsang are among the nine marathoners in the Kenyan team. Athletics coach Francis Kamau who nurtured Wanjiru said he believes that the athlete is aggressive and may bring back to Kenya the world Marathon record.

   Brazilian marathon runner Cordeiro out of Beijing Olympics (English Eastday)
Vanderlei Cordeiro will miss the Prague Marathon this Sunday after his physical exam revealed an inflamed leg muscle which will push him further away from this year's Olympic Games. He has already been forced to sit out of the Turin Marathon and his chances of improving his time in the marathon to make the Brazilian Olympic team.

   Record number of runners sign on for Great Ocean Road Marathon (Geelong Advertiser)
Event director John Craven said a record number of entries have been received for he 2008 Great Ocean Road Marathon exceeding last year's registration by over three hundred. Competitors from twelve countries would compete in the event, including seven Africans and an Argentinian.

   Flanagan following parents' footsteps in distance running (Indy Star)
Shalane Flanagan who made recent headlines breaking the women's record in the 10,000 meters in a 30:34.49 has famous roots tied to marathoning. Flanagan's mother Cheryl Treworgy, born Cheryl Pedlow Bridges set a world marathon mark of 2:49:40 in 1971 andher father is a marathoner as well. The current twenty-six year old Flanagan said she is genetically predisposed to longer distances, but listening to her father's advice does not want to go into marathoning too early.
