   Missouri woman wins women's Fargo Marathon title (In-Forum News)
At thirty-nine years old, Andrea McGehee won the 2008 Fargo Marathon in 3:08. This was her fourth marathon to date. Her third marathon was the 2008 Boston Marathon last month.

   Makau Wins, But Ritzenhein's Record Still Stands (Race Results Weekly)
Debuting in a race in the U.S. for the first time, Kenyan elite runner Patrick Makau won the New York Road Runner's Healthy Kidney 10-K in a 28:08. Although he did not break Dathan Ritzenhein's course record set in 2007, Makau was pleased with the results. Makau was on pace for a course record by mile four, but was waylaid by the challenging course.

   Pain for Paula Radcliffe (Times Online UK)
Paula Radcliffe is on crutches just fourteen weeks before she bids to win the marathon at the Olympic Games in Beijing. Radcliffe, who missed last month’s Flora London Marathon with a toe injury, has developed a muscle problem in her hip. An MRI scan did not pick up the problem but a second test revealed that a muscle has pulled away and is putting pressure on her bone.

My Athlete, a sports technology firm based in Easton, Connecticut, will be testing real time runner tracking for for a special athlete running the Cleveland Marathon using a new GPS device. That will show where Plain Dealer reporter Zachary Lewis has been and where he is at that moment, current to within thirty seconds. The device he's using is a prototype and may not be one hundred percent accurate.

   Relief as marathon man escapes quake (ICWales)
Karl Baynham, 51, and friends Billy Donegan, Peter Keeber, Georgie Barnes and Peter Coughlin flew to Beijing for the Great Wall marathon as news filtered through about the earthquake estimated to have killed 20,000 people. The brother of a Merthyr Tydfil man who travelled to China earlier this week has spoken of his relief after hearing he is safe.

Billionaire Richard Branson, whose Virgin Group of businesses spans music to space travel, is preparing to run his first marathon in 2010 to give a boost to London's biggest fundraising race. The fifty-seven-year-old entrepreneur is known for adventures, but had steered away from running since childhood. Branson will don running shoes in the name of fundraising as he is hopeful that the race will make over a quarter billion pounds in five years.
 
   Virgin succeeds Flora as London Marathon sponsor (Guardian UK)
After fourteen years as title sponsor of the London Marathon, Virgin has signed a £17m deal to replace Flora as the next sponsor of the London marathon. The new five year London marathon title sponsorship deal will be Virgin Money, the company's financial services division. Virgin founder Richard Branson is excited about the new prospects.

Author and former Olympian Jeff Galloway says the secret to running a fast, enjoyable and injury-free marathon is walking. Galloway whose books and training programs have made him one of the nation's most popular running authorities insists that years of experience with a wide variety of runners proves that short walking breaks are the key to covering 26.2 miles without the agony often associated with the distance. Galloway advocates a ratio of walking to running that varies depending on a runner's ability and fitness.

   Maynard eyes his Seventh Palos Verdes Marathon crown this weekend (Daily Breeze)
James Maynard will be looking to capture his seventh Palos Verdes Marathon title when he defends his crown in the forty second running of the event. The Palos Verdes Marathon, which is a qualifying event for the Boston Marathon, features a winding, sloping course that boasts a steep, three mile incline between the twenty and twenty three mile marks, but also offers a cool breeze and a view of the ocean much of the way. Maynard won last year at age thirty nine, when he finished with a time of 2:41:45.

   Tune to attack One Hour World record in Ostrava (IAAF)
2008 Boston Marathon Winner Dire Tune will attempt to set a One Hour World record. Tune plans to run more than the 18,340m within in a sixty minute period, a feat achieved by Tegla Loroupe back in 1998 in Borgholzhausen, Germany. This is the same track where Haile broke the record.

   Olympic Marathon Runner Lee Troop in Stalking Court Battle (Herald Sun)
Troop, the 35 year old Olympic Marathoner slapped a restraining order on Phil Johnson for making harassing phone calls to Troop and his coach of ten years, Olympian Steve Moneghetti.

   Face of Defense::Airman Runs in Memory of Bombing Victims (The Military Family News)
Air Force Senior Airman Brendan Brustad left Altus Air Force Base on April 23 on a personal quest to run 168 miles in memory of the 168 people killed in the 1995 Oklahoma City Murrah Federal Building bombing. His course followed a route to the Oklahoma City Memorial that would cover 141.8 miles over four days. He would then finish the distance in the 26.2-mile Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon on April 27.

   Baldini and Brugnetti selected to defend titles in Beijing (IAAF)
2004 Olympic champions Stefano Baldini (Marathon) and Ivano Brugnetti (20km Race Walk) have been selected by the Italian Federation to represent their country at the Beijing Olympics this summer. Defending 2004 Olympic Marathon champion Baldini is the only male athlete running the marathon. Bruna Genovese, Anna Incerti and Vincenza Sicari will be representing the women's marathon team.

   Las Vegas Marathon owner runs up debt (Las Vegas Sun)
Las Vegas Marathoner owner Chris Devine stated that significant losses during the 2007 race year has caused the marathon to fall into debt with some of Nevada's businesses and organizations. This is the third year that Devine Racing has suffered losses during the December race

Delaware Marathon which is celebrating its fifth anniversary has reached its registration quota at over six hundred and fifty runners. Returning to the race are the top three finishers from 2007, Kevin Beugless who won in a 2:39:16; runner-up Marco Capelli with a 2:43:27 finisher and Eric Makovsky who was third in a 2:45:57. The race is a flat four loop course.

   Kenya names a provisional squad for Beijing Olympics (IAAF)
Kenya has unveiled an ambitious and comprehensive Olympic Games preparation program for a provisional line-up of one hundred twenty athletes and twenty coaches who will go into residential training camp at Chepkoilel Campus in Eldoret. The coaches will pA final team will be named after the trials but the association did not disclose the mode of selection. Marathoners and Japan-based runners like World Half Marathon record holder Sammy Wanjiru have been given leave of absence from the camp but will be required to compete in the Trials.    A Unique Marathon Beverage (Prague Post Online)
Unlike other finishers of the Prague Marathon, 2008 champion Ken Mburu Mungara ate oranges and drank water when he finished on Old Town Square Sunday morning, shunning the nonalcoholic Staropramen beer thrust into his hand by organizers when he crossed the finish line. Mungara won in 2:11:06, but the heat and the hilly course prevented him from breaking a 2:10 course record.

The Post-News Colorado Colfax Marathon is ready to roll on Sunday, May 18, 2008 at 6 a.m. in City Park with a redesigned course, an exciting charity partners program, and 5,000 athletes. The days events include the 26.2 mile marathon, half marathon and the 5 person relay. The course will run on the famous Colfax Avenue.

   Sixty-eight-year-old man dies during marathon in Eagle River (Chicago Tribune)
Robert Zapranoff collapsed during the 2008 Journey's Marathon. There is no word of cause of death. Online records kept by the marathon say Zapranoff completed the race last year.
 
   Man dies during Journeys Marathon (Daily News)
A call over the police radio announced that a runner was down. A 11:21 am Robert Zapranoff, 68, of Mercer, collapsed while running the Journeys Marathon. He was taken to Eagle River Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead by Vilas County Deputy Coroner Mike Gough. Connie Heeg, executive race director, stated that the death during the Journeys marathon was the first ever in the event.

   In Kenya, Violence Shakes Running Community (The New York Times)
Luke Kibet won the world marathon championship last August and was thought to do what no other Kenyan has been able to do: win the Olympic Gold Medal in the Olympic Marathon. Kenya's civil unrest has disrupted many of the Kenyan athlete's training. The Beijing Olympics is challenge enough and the added life stress will make these Olympic Games even tougher to prepare for.
 
   Brisbane runner aims high (Brisbane Times)
Aidan Hobbs won the Brisbane Marathon last month and has his sights set on the Commonwealth Games in 2010. With a PR of 2 hours and 43 minutes for the 42 kilometer race, Hobbs hopes to run even faster.

   Kiplagat headlines Utrecht in search of Olympic Qualifier (IAAF)
Two-time World Road Running champion Lornah Kiplagat will lead the field in a women's 10,000m in Utrecht, Netherlands. Kiplagat will be joined by her cousin Hilda Kibet who also missed achieving an Olympic qualifier at the European Cup 10,000m in Istanbul last month. In 2007, Kiplagat’s focus was the 10,000m at the World Championships in Osaka, but a calf injury sustained in May was serious enough to curtail her training and sideline her from Osaka.

   Busy week ahead for race director of Blue Nose Marathon (Nove Scotia News)
Joachim Stroink, race director of the Blue Nose Marathon, expects seven thousand participants to the 2008 event. The Halifax businessman has been the volunteer race director for five years in which he watched the event grow. 2008 marks his last year in the role as he wants to focus with the charity with the Learning Disabilities Association which have helped his two children who have dyslexia and attention deficit disorder.

The 2008 Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon is one of the oldest races in the country, but runner participation has been dwindling. Some blame this on regions focus on football, baseball and basketball while others attribute the low profile to the race's own personnel and lack of marketing to the community and elsewhere. The race has heard these complaints and is unveiling a new course for it's thirty-first event.
