 Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon

   Fire delays start of Flying Pig marathon (Times Recorder)
The start of the 2008 Flying Pig Marathon was delayed and the race rerouted because of an overnight fire along the route. When the race started, firefighters were still battling a three-alarm house fire. As a result, the race will be longer than the usual 26 miles, 385 yards.

   Wis woman finishes 2nd in Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati (Chicago Tribune)
Andy Martin, winner of last weekend's Big Sur Marathon, won the 2008 Flying Pig Marathon uncontested in 2:30:40. Runner up in the men's race Brian List finished in 2:33:33. Michelle Didion won the women's division in 3:05:18.

   Providence Marathon Debuts in the Rain (ABC6.com)
The debut of the 2008 Cox Providence Marathon saw rain and three thousand runners take to the streets of the capitol city of Providence, Rhode Island. Blaine Moore won the marathon in 2:43:28. Alyson Venti in her marathon debut at the debut marathon won in 3:01:02.
 
 Eugene Marathon

   Nearly Six Thousand Athletes Hit The Pavement in Eugene (KEZI9.com)
Six thousand athletes from around the world took part in the second annual 2008 Eugene Marathon. The men's winner was Matthew Norminton 2:22:04. James Rucker and Jeff Drouet finished second and third in a 2:28:10 and 2:28:29 respectively. The women's winner was Erin Kaspar in a 2:52:52. Jaymee Marty and Wendy Terris finished second and third in a 2:55:12 and 2:55:35 respectively.

   Thousands Sign Up Early for Honolulu Marathon (KHON)
The Honolulu Marathon, which draws thousands of locals and Japanese tourists, has opened early registration drawing thousands of the race's veterans. Although the number of Japanese racers have been dwindling, race officials believe this to be a result of the cost of travel and airfare in recent times.

   Ashley wins Lincoln Marathon (KMEG14)
Levi Ashley of Lincoln wins the Lincoln National Guard Marathon in his marathon debut in a finish of 2:26:55. Ashley had won the event's half-marathon in 2006 and 2007. Valerie Gortmaker of Lincoln won the women's race in 2:59:27.
 
 North Carolina Marathon

   Runners enjoy hometown marathon in Greensboro (News14.com)
Around 1,500 runners packed the streets of downtown Greensboro, North Carolina in the city's first marathon. Many runners were running to support the Foster Friends of North Carolina.

   Johnson, Kipyego take Edinburgh 10km titles (IAAF)
Benita Johnson, Australia's 2004 world cross country champion who missed four months training during the winter with a knee injury, blew away the challenge of Kenya's Rose Cheruiyot to win the 2008 Great Edinburgh Run in a time of 32:20. Johnson who withdrew from the 2008 London Marathon is now certain she has a strong base to build upon towards the Beijing Olympics. Johnson is still deciding whether to compete in the Olympic Marathon or compete on the track in Beijing this summer.
 
 Rhein-Marathon Dusseldorf

   Yator and Kraus battle the heat to take the Düsseldorf Marathon (IAAF)
Bellor Yator and Melanie Kraus battled hot weather conditions to win the men's and women's races of the 2008 Dusseldorf Marathon. Although the race organizers were looking for a sub 2:10, the weather prevented, Yator, the defending champion in the men's race, from beating his course record of 2:09:47. Yator won in 2:11:15. Zakaria Abdulhak and Riyadh Almustafa finished second and third with 2:11:37 and 2:11:41. Kraus won the women's race in 2:28:56 and secured an Olympic berth for the Beijing Games. Tsige Worku and Kiraz Ummü were second and third in 2:38:10 and 2:38:25 respectively.
 
 Shiprock Marathon

   No record, but a win for Billey (Daily Times)
Randy Billey won the 2008 Shiprock Marathon for the first time in four years in a finish of 2:52:53, edging out runner-up Heath Hibbard who finished in a 2:57:47, third place Justin Bronder in a 3:02:12 and defending champion, William Slim who was fourth in a 3:03:36. Forty-six year old Kay Evans won the women's race in 3:30:56 to hold off second-place Alyson Kreutzer (3:32:56) and third-place Robin Halloran (3:34:03).
 
 Vancouver International Marathon

   Thomas Omwenga Wins 2008 BMO Bank of Montreal Vancouver Marathon (FoxBusiness)
Defending Champion Thomas Omwenga wins the 2008 Bank of Montreal Vancouver Marathon in a 2:15:59 In the women's race Mary Akor beat out defending champion Claudia Carmago to win in a time of 2:37:54.

More than 12,500 runners had signed up for the 2008 Edinburgh Marathon. Around four thousand runners finished the race last year, but this year nine thousand five hundred will be setting off on the full course, with a further three thousand competing as members of relay teams. Entrants will be coming from all over the world, representing forty different countries.

   LI Marathon to cap Festival of Races weekend (Newsday)
Among the 5,200 runners already signed up to run in the 2008 Festival of Races which includes the Long Island Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K events. The youngest marathoner will be sixteen year old Chaminade High School sophomore Matthew Saitta, who will be debuting in the marathon distance.

   Allston triumphs at the Rotorua Marathon despite sadness (TV3.co.nz)
Twenty-two year old Australian Hanny Allston won the women's race at the Rotorua Marathon despite the sadness surrounding the sudden death of her coach a few days earlier. In the men's race defending champion, Craig Kirkwood, ran out of steam at the 35k mark, allowing Joe Piggins to take the victory.

Weather sites had predicted a high of eighty degrees for the 2008 Flying Pig Marathon, but the temperature has since fallen to fifty-eight degrees. The race organizers looking to have a safe as well as fun event are still concerned. Hot weather created safety problems at the 2008 Chicago Marathon where runners battled eighty-eight degree temperatures, humidity and shortages of water and energy drinks.

The 2008 Shiprock Marathon will mark its twenty-fifth anniversary. A pair of former pacesetters will compete against William Slim, the defending men's champ, and course record-holder Randy Billie, who posted a head-scratching time of 2:39:37 in 2004.

   U.S. entries in Vancouver Marathon drop by half (Metro News)
American entries in the 2008 Vancouver Marathon are down forty to fifty percent because of the strong Canadian dollar and stricter passport requirements stated the marathon’s race director. About 13,000 people are expected to participate which is two thousand less than in 2006.

   Defending champ to return to Vancouver Marathon (The Province)
Defending Champion Thomas Omwenga, a 2:10 marathoner who battled dehydration to win last year's Vancouver Marathon finishing in 2:25:23, will return along with women's race winner Claudia Carmargo. Omwenga's competition, Mohammed Awol and William Serem, will not be participating in the 2008 Vancouver Marathon due to visa problems. Camargo is expected to be challenged by Yolanda Mercado and Mary Akor who had just completed the 2008 US Olympic Trials two weeks ago.

   Four Former Champions to Race In Belfast Marathon (Athletic Association of Ireland)
John Mutai and Marashet Jumma, champions of the men's and women's races, will be returning to defending their titles at the 2008 Belfast Marathon. The marathon has had a record entry of 15,000 participants in the various events.

   Holyoke Marathon always looks ahead (The Republican)
The Holyoke Marathon is the only marathon in the region, typically drawing approximately one hundred runners, mostly from the Northeast. It ranks as the tenth oldest marathon in the country and nineteenth oldest in the world. Winning times for the 2007 race were a 2:46:09 by Mike Shapiro in the men's race and a 3:39:03 by Sarah Shapiro in the woman's race.

   Not So Fast: Marathon Runner Catches Up To Thief (WCCO)
Mark Laliberte, a hospital worker in St. Paul, walked by a coffee shop where two men were robbing the register. Laliberte wrestled one suspect near the entrance and chased the man a few blocks wearing only one shoe. The second perpetrator got away.

Run for the Red marathon relies on volunteers. With about four hundred volunteers this year, there are fifteen to twenty people at each water stop alone. Many volunteers have come back year after year.

Defending Champion Justin Gillette will be running the 2008 Run for the Red Pocono Marathon. Gillette will be joined by 2006 champion Solomon Too and US Olympic Trials participant Michael Wardian. Race director Bob Werts said there were over three hundred ninety entrants, with another two hundred signed up for the 5K event.

The "Run for the Red" Pocono Marathon, now in its third year, gives the entire Pocono community a chance to support their friends and neighbors through this worthy agency's relief fund as the proceeds goes to the American Red Cross of Monroe County. The Red Cross performs important duties in fulfilling its mission to serve victims of disasters and emergencies. Recent years have hit the agency's funds hard.
