 Grandma's Marathon
  Post-Race Review/ Results
   Kenyan breezes in third marathon win at Grandma's (Twin Cities.com)
Lamech Mokono took his third marathon win of his career at the Grandma's Marathon in cooler but humid conditions with a 2:13:39 finish. David Tuwei closed a big gap to finish five seconds later in second place, followed by Benson Cheruiyot in third with a 2:14:20 and David Cheruiyot in fourth with a 2:15:33, who are not related. The women's race was dominated by defending champion Mary Akor who won in a 2:38:50 leading in nearly three minutes over Margaret Toroitich.

   More than 4,000 run in Mayor's Marathon (KTUU)
The 2008 Mayor's Marathon in Anchorage, Alaska saw over four thousand in their running events and sixteen hundred competitors for their marathon. Defending champion Jerome Ross won in 2:19. In the women's race, Annie Thiessen in her 101st marathon won in 3:01.

   Rob de Castella warns marathoners of cruel road ahead (The Australian News)
"Deek", aka Rob De Castella, marathon world record holder from 1981-84, fears the air quality at the 2008 Beijing Games will be worse than his experiences with smog at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. De Castella believes the smog in LA that prevented him from seeing out of his eye was nearly swollen shut contributed to his poor performance since he was one of the strongest competitors in the field. Beijing's well-publicized pollution problems are ongoing, as many raise comparison with the Athens Games where air quality was a major issue.

   Radcliffe falls further behind with injury as odds of making the Olympics lengthen (Times Online UK)
With the women's marathon in Beijing is only eight weeks away, world record holder Paula Radcliffe faces rather grim possibilities as her injury has yet to progress from workouts in the pool and sessions on an anti-gravity treadmill. When Radcliffe disclosed she was suffering from a hip injury and a stress fracture in her left thigh, she said that specialists had advised her that it would be impossible for her to be ready to compete in Beijing; but Radcliffe plans to beat the odds. She wants to race in Beijing and make up for failing to finish the last Olympic marathon in Athens, but is running out of time.

   Last year's Grandma's Marathon winner is racing on a rebound (Duluth News Tribune)
Mary Akor posted more qualifying times for the U.S. Olympic Trials than anyone else with eleven. She won last year's Grandma's Marathon by over three minutes and was the first American to win the race since 1996.
 
   Rested Sammy Malakwen ready for 2008 Grandma’s Marathon (Lake County News Chronicle)
Sammy Malakwen will only drive a leisurely 5 miles to the start of the Grandma's marathon. He hopes to run under 2 hours and 15 minutes for the 26.2 mile race. The 38 year old Cheryiout is one of the hopefuls for the race and hopes to run as fast as 2 hours and 10 minutes.

   Marathon More Than A Race For Longtime Lovers (Northlands News Center)
Grandma's Marathon is more than just a race for many, for Art and Helen Wright Grandma's holds a special place in their hearts as they have volunteered for the event every year since the race began. The race event eventually became a family affair for the Wrights as their kids took up running. Art Wright who is ninety-five years old has announced that he will be retiring from his volunteer post this weekend.

With over 19 hours of sunlight and afternoon temperatures people flock to Anchorage Alaska for the Summer Solstice Festival. Nearly every hotel room is filled with thousands of runners from across the lower 48 states who will compete in the 26.2 mile marathon and the 13.1 mile half marathon.

With four months to go for the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon and Half Marathon, runners should be focused on committing to the distance, preparation and training. About 10% of entrants typically don't make it to the starting line. Race director Patricia Ball ran her first marathon in 1982 in Detroit as a way to quit smoking and has since completed more than twenty marathons.

Course record holder from 1989 Brad Camp is disappointed his Gold Coast Marathon record still stands after nineteen years. Seoul Olympian Camp said Australian athletics desperately needed to attract top athletes from other sports into disciplines. His standing record remains at 2:10:11.

A record field will be expected at the 2008 Grandma’s Marathon, but there are no clear cut favorite. David Cheruiyot, winner of the Houston and Ottawa Marathons, will be among the leaders. In the women's field defending champion, Mary Akor, is sure to lead the field.

With a record number of 18,000 runners expected in Duluth, Minnesota to participate in the Grandma's Marathon and other two races, hotel rooms are inflated with rates reaching $500 per night two night minimum. Many runners made these reservations one year in advance. In the off season the same hotels could go for $99 per night.

The 32nd Grandma's Marathon has 9,888 entrants and the half marathon has over 6,000 entrants. The nearly 10,000 entrants places the race 12th overall on the list of U.S. marathons. The race starts on Saturday at 7:30 am.

Participants in the 32nd annual Grandma's Marathon will face difficult traveling northbound on Interstate 35. The left hand northbound lane will be closed indefinitely until a piece of an overpass can be repaired.

   Las Vegas Marathon bills being paid, owner says (Sign on San Diego)
Following agreements to sell the Los Angeles Marathon and the Chicago Half Marathon, Chris Devine stated the he will begin making payments for the Las Vegas marathon. He further stated the the December 7th, 2008 race will go on as scheduled.

   Supermom: She gives birth to six, runs marathon (MSNBC)
Jenny Masche, the mother of one-year-old sextuplets, ran the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in San Diego less than a year after her childrens' birth. Masche found it easier to push through the wall of the marathon than it is to raise seven infants. She finished Rock 'n' Roll in 5:30.

THE Gold Coast marathon looks set to crack the 18,000 entry mark with more than 16,000 registrants and two weeks until the race closes. The running events will be a significant tourism injection for the Gold Coast in Australia.

Eighty-three year old Alex Ratelle once held eight world age-group records and thirty-two American age-group bests. The retired anesthesiologist has one of the most remarkable Grandma’s records when he ran the marathon in 2:30:40 at fifty-six years old and a 2:48:20 at sixty years old setting American records in those age group. Ratelle who was a navigator in a B-17 bomber during World War II took up running for the first time since high school in his forties after his father died of heart disease.

   Grandma's Marathon purchases building (Business North)
The Grandma’s Marathon-Duluth, Inc. a non-profit organization, announced its Board of Director's approval of the purchase of the building that serves as the organization’s headquarters in the Canal Park area. Grandma's Marathon headquarters has been located at 351 Canal Park Drive, less than 100 yards from the finish line of Grandma’s Marathon and the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon, since 1996.

In the past five years Rosie Swale-Pope, a sixty-one year old grandmother from Great Britain, has run 20,000 miles across some of the world's most hostile terrain. She set off in October 2003 with a goal to raise money for cancer charities having lost her husband to prostate cancer one year prior. Having encountered a polar bear, been hit by a bus, almost dying on several occasions and been the recipient of countless marriage proposals, Swale-Pope is happy to be home.
 
   Noguchi to Run at World Half Marathon (Daily Yomiuri)
Defending Olympic champion in the women's marathon, Mizuki Noguchi will run for Japan's team at the world half-marathon championships in Rio de Janeiro in October following the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Prior to making her marathon debut in 2002, Noguchi placed second, fourth, fourth and ninth in consecutive world half-marathons from 1999-2002.

Nike, in its first year operating the training program for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon on Oct. 12, has boldly trod where few other corporations have tried to go: Chicago's lakefront path by placing ten decals in the middle of the asphalt bike lanes in five different locations on the lakefront path. Nike didn't exactly get permission to put the decals down on the public space. Many wonder if corporate advertising has gone out of control.

Chuck Engle of Dublin Ohio won the 2008 edition of the Hatfield McCoy marathon in 2 hours 55 seconds. This was Engle' third win in the marathon at Williamson and his second in a row.

Annemarie Wallwork, a thirty-seven year old mother of two and marathon runner, has come a long way having transformed herself from an over three hundred pound smoker who never exercised to an avid marathon runner. Despite her asthma and attempts at Weight Watchers, Wallwork joined the Learn to Run clinic at the Running Room. Since, she has lost 130 pounds, quit smoking, has run one marathon, four half-marathons and goes jogging four times a week and serves as an inspiration to many.
