On June 20, the Big Bear Lake Planning Commission approved HBT Events' proposal for the Big Bear Marathon to be held in the Valley Sept. 6, 2008.

   One Hour World Record by Gebrselassie in Ostrava (Race Results Weekly)
The Ethiopian set a new mark in the one hour run, covering 21,285 meters. En route, the two-time Olympic 10,000m champion also broke the world record for 20,000m, covering 50 laps in 56:25.98.
 
   Gebrselassie Breaks 2 World Records in 1-hour Run at Golden Spike Meet (Associated Press)
Gebrselassie broke the 16-year-old records of Mexico's Arturo Barrios set in La Fleche, France. The Ethiopian completed 21.285 meters (12.77 miles) to beat Barrios' mark by 184 meters, and finished 20,000 meters in 56 minutes, 25.98 seconds, nearly a full 30 seconds faster than the previous standard.

Cpyrian Kiogora upset defending champion Albert Matebor as he won the full marathon in 2.19.39 on Saturday. Matebor settled for second place in 2:20:34.
 
   Kiogora Wins Lewa Marathon in Record Time (All Africa)
Kiogora broke the course record when he crossed the finish line in two hours, 13 minutes and 29 second improving on Albert Matebor's previous record.
