 Berlin Marathon

   IDF delegation to Berlin Marathon runs into funding obstacle (The Jerusalem Post)
The 35th Berlin Marathon will take place on September 28. It is expected to draw 40,000 athletes and more than a million spectators. The IDF wanted to send a command of 60 officers to run the Berlin Marathon but due to over booked facilities on the German military post the IDF will have to pay for the housing of its 60 officers and is unable to find the funding.

   Mini-Marathon Event Kicks Off In Farmington Hills (Detroit NBC 4)
Students at Gill Elementary will kick off a summer long fitness initiative to walk a marathon over the course of their summer break. On Friday, over 500 students will run the first half mile of the marathon. Funds are being raised for school activities.

   Benita Johnson to carry father's spirit to Beijing Olympics (Herald Sun)
Benita Johnson's victory was bitter sweet at the Freihofer's 5km road race in Albany, New York. As she crossed the finish line, she learned that her father Tony Willis had died of a degenerative neurological disease he had been sick with for some time. Her father introduced her to the sport and will be with her as she runs at the Beijing Olympics. Johnson will make the decision on whether she runs the 10,000m or marathon in the next two weeks.
 
 Phuket International Marathon

   The 2008 Laguna Phuket International Marathon will take place on Sunday 15 June. (National News Burea Public Relations)
A two day expo will kick off the Laguna Phuket International Marathon. Well over 5,000 participants will compete in the race day activities. Several TV and radio stations will be airing the event, live and on broadcast delay.

   Craig runners participate in Steamboat Marathon (Craig Daily Press)
Nearly 1700 runners participated in the running events that started promptly at 7:30 am near Hahn's Peak Village. The race is well know for it's scenery and difficult hills.

   Podruchny running in his 100th marathon in Manitoba (Winnipeg Free Press)
This Fathers Day Tom Podruchny will run his 100th marathon at the age of 71. He ran his first marathon in 1971 in Manitoba and will be the first Manitoban to reach the century mark in the marathon. When he did his first marathon, most of his relatives did not think he would live through it.
 
 Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Marathon

   Las Vegas Marathon title sponsor quits, cites race finances (Sign on San Diego)
Zappos.com has walked away from the Las Vegas Marathon and dropped its option for the 2009 Las Vegas Marathon title sponsorship. Zappos cited financial issues with Devine Racing based out of Chicago as its primary reason for walking away.

   Man fighting to stay in U.S. wins SJI Marathon (San Juan Islander)
Manuh Santos won the San Juan Island Marathon in 2 hours, 38 minutes and 51 seconds which eclipsed his previous best of 2 hours 39 minutes and 14 seconds. He has lived in the US illegally and is fighting for his citizenship. He has won three of the four marathons he has entered. He finished second in the other one.

   Troubled L.A. Marathon is up for sale (LA Times)
In a continued struggle with its finances, Devine Racing LLC, the race event management company behind such races as the Los Angeles Marathon and Las Vegas Marathon, has announced publicly for the first time that the Los Angeles Marathon is for sale. Potential interest has stemmed from Falconhead Capital the owners of Elite Racing, Dallas-based U.S. Road Sports and Entertainment Group which recently purchased the ING Miami Marathon and Los Angeles media executives Russ Pillar and David Kingsdale. Devine Racing's debt includes what it owes its creditors - vendors, elite athlete/champions and the Nevada Highway Patrol in conjunction with the 2007 Las Vegas Marathon.
 
 Cork City Marathon

   8,000 compete in second Cork marathon (Irish Times)
East Cork's Roy Fahy won the second Cork City marathon in a time of two hours 33 minutes 55 seconds after finish third in the first annual event. He was two minutes ahead of second place finisher Eoin O'Connell whose time was 2 hours 35 minutes and 57 seconds. St Finbarr's Cathal O'Connell finished third in 2 hours 36 minutes and 17 seconds. The women's marathon was won by Sligo Athletic Club's Lucy Brennan with a time of 2 hours 54 minutes.
 
 North Olympic Discovery Marathon

   Nearly 2,000 expected to run weekend marathon (Peninsula Daily News)
Over sixteen hundred runners are registered for the various running events during the North Olympic Discovery Marathon weekend of which 1,070 are women and 608 are men. New to the North Olympic Discovery Marathon are the Olympic Medical Center 5K and 10K run.

   Endurance Training Doesn't Have to Be an Uphill Battle (Washington Post)
Howard Schneider found motivation from a popular voice to finish the Marine Corp Half Marathon. Several opportunities exist to help keep you motivated for even the full marathon. Schneider suggests that if the 26.2 mile race seems a bit to long to go for the half and even the 5K to get things started.
 
   A few words from man who started all this (Union Tribune)
Frank Shorter sat in the VIP tent of the Rock n Roll marathon and looked on as African runners crossed the line. He looked on in complete surprise that he, too, at one time had run as fast. The 1972 Olympic Marathon Gold Medalist, now age 60, stated that better days are ahead for American runners.

   Haile Gebrselassie chasing another Olympic medal (CBC Sports)
Haile Gebrselassie was vocal about his decision to skip the 2008 Beijing Olympic marathon due to environmental conditions, but the world class athlete is eyeing the 10,000 meter Ethiopian team, where in remains one available spot with 10,000 m specialists Sihine and Bekele already safely on the team. There is still one major 10,000m race where Ethiopians will try to run fast enough to impress the selectors and that is the Prefontaine meet June 8. The Ethiopian head coach, Dr Wolde Kostre, is expected to send a younger athlete if he runs even one second faster than Gebrselassie.

   “Team Laguna” charity fundraising at the 2008 Laguna Phuket International Marathon (Travel Press)
Over 3350 runners have registsered for the the 2008 Laguna Phuket International Marathon which is set to run on June 14. The runners are primarily from Thailand and race organizers expect over 5000 to enter the event which races funds to aid remote schools throughout the region.

 City of Christchurch Marathon

   Hooper scores hometown win in Christchurch Marathon (Stuff.co.nz)
Kiwi Rowan Hooper won his second marathon in New Zealand beating Australian Dave Ruschena to win the Christchurch Marathon in 2:21:41. Debuting in the distance, Ruschena took second in a 2:22:08 and Paul Martinico finished third. In the women's race Sandra Prosenica won the women's race in 2:57:37. Sally Anderson was second in a 2:59.

   Athens' deserted Games sites a warning to London Olympics (Telegraph UK)
Athens spent more than £9 billion on staging the Olympics, slightly less than the current estimate for the 2012 London Games, and leaving Greece with a national budget deficit of 6.1 percent. Of the twenty-two venues built in Athens, twenty-one are in a state of disrepair and closed to the public due to lack of interest and vandalism.

   Duel for lead decided by rare clothing failure at Rock 'n' Roll Marathon (Sign on San Diego)
Kenyans Simon Wangai and Leonard Maina ran side-by-side as they raced towards the twenty-two mile marker in the men's race of the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon. When Wangai surged ahead just shy of 23 miles, Maina could not respond due to the socks bunched up at bunched at the bottom of his shoes causing blisters on the soles of his feet. Wangai won the race in 2:10:07 and Maina settled for second in 2:10:56.

   Nepali runner Deepak Rai wins Everest marathon (Nepal News)
Deepak Rai scored three successive victories in the 6th edition of Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon winning the 2008 edition in 3:53:14, starting from the base camp of Mt. Everest at the altitude of 5,364 meters. Rai set the course record in 2006 in a 3:28:27. Phurba Tamang was second and Phuri Sherpa became third in 4:10:29. In the women's race Ang Phuti Sherpa clocked 5:33:10 beating Mingma Chamgi and Mingma Phuti Sherpa who are two Sherpa girls from the same village.

   Indefatigable Ndereba bags 10,000m title (Danily Nation)
Catherine Ndereba, completed a rare double with victory in the 10,000m race Saturday at the Prisons national championships at the Nyayo National Stadium. Ndereba beat out Pauline Wangui and former London marathon runner-up, Salina Kosgei to win in 33:10.1. Wangui was second stopping the clock at 33:35.4 and Kosgei third in 33:53.2. Ndereba is heading back to the United States to train for the Beijing Games where she will run the marathon.

   Radcliffe - It can't happen again (Guardian UK)
At thirty-four years of age, Paula Radcliffe has been running for twenty three years and collected a number of accolades on the track, in cross country and on the roads in several high profile races such as the 2000 Sydney Olympics with international fields. Yet etched into the memories of many are scenes from the women's race at the 2004 Olympic marathon in Athens where Radcliffe dropped out during the race failing the crowds and herself. Radcliffe plans to run the Beijing Games and has kept her options open to run the London 2012 Olympic Games as well.

   Kenyan, Russian win Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in San Diego (International Herald Tribune)
Defending Champion Simon Wangai edged out Leonard Maina to win the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in 2:10:07. Kenyans swept the top four spots, Mania was second in 2:10:56, Hilary Kimaiyo was third in 2:11:27 and James Getanda was fourth in 2:11:50. In the woman's race Yulia Gromova won with a six minute personal best time of 2:28:23, followed by Jemima Sumgong in 2:30:18 and Nuta Olaru who was third in 2:30:54.

   Running through the ’Boat (Steamboat Pilot and Today)
Jason Saitta beat out the field of over sixteen thousand runners to win the Steamboat Marathon in 2:36:02. odd Trapp was second in 2:41:56 and Ian Mallams was third in 2:45:03. Holly Meyer won the women's race in 3;29:03 ninety seconds faster than next woman in.

   Queen Elizabeth marks 1908 London Olympics and Centenary of “Classic Marathon Distance” (IAAF)
Queen Elizabeth II hosted a reception last night to mark the centenary of the 1908 London Olympic Games when the classic marathon distance of 26.2 miles was used for the first time to allow the Royal family to watch the start of the race from the window of the nursery in Windsor Castle. The 1908 Olympics were due to be held in Rome, but London stepped in when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 1906. The 1908 Olympic Marathon was famous for incident surrounding Italian Dorando Pietri who had led the race but collapsed after entering the stadium in first place; but was later disqualified and first place awarded to American Johnny Hayes.

   U.S. Olympic marathon runner is hoping to inspire younger athletes (Ann Arbor News)
Brian Sell who will represent the United States as part of the three-man marathon team at the Beijing Olympics along with Hansons-Brooks Distance Project teammate Clint Verran will appear at the expo that kicks off the weekend's annual Dexter-Ann Arbor Run. Sell, who finished second to controversial Ethiopian Alene Reta in last year's half-marathon, will not participate this year because it conflicts with his Olympic training schedule.

   Legends back rejected mother's Olympic bid (New Zealand Herald)
Liza Hunter-Galvan is determined to run at the Beijing Olympics to create new memories for her brain-injured daughter although New Zealand Athletics has ruled her out for Olympic berth. Hunter-Galvin, a mother-of-four who ran in the 2004 Athens Olympics, has fought back from her own injuries suffered when a truck ploughed into the family's car in the United States last year causing extensive brain damage to her daughter. Olympic triple gold medallist Peter Snell, and bronze medallists and marathon champions Lorraine Moller and Rod Dixon are supporting Hunter-Galvan as the tribunal makes a secondary consideration.

   Illness kept Chicago winner from Boston, but he'll be here (Sign on San Diego)
A bout with malaria sidelined Kenyan elite Patrick Ivuti from the 2008 Boston Marathon allowing Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot to win unchallenged at the race and failing to qualify for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Although not back in peak form, Ivuti will be back racing at the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon. Undiscouraged, he aims for the next World Championships and the 2012 London Olympics and perhaps even setting a new world record in between.
 
 Stockholm Marathon

   Korir wins Stockholm Marathon, Andersson first woman (International Herald Tribune)
Willy Korir won the Stockholm Marathon in 2:16:03. Bernard Mutai was second in 2:17:57 and Paul Kipkemoi Tangus was third, while two-time defending champion Phillip Bandawe finished fourth. Isabellah Andersson of Sweden won the women's race in 2:34:14, more than six minutes ahead of Sweden's Lena Gavelin.

   Marathon just another item on Gillette's to-do list (South Bend Tribune)
Justin Gillette won the 2008 Sunburst Marathon in 2:30:30 despite participating in his brother's wedding rehearsal dinner the night before. Ryan Greutman was about six minutes behind finishing second. Tracy Wollschlager easily won the women's race in 3:06:36. Michelle Didion of LaPorte was second, more than eight minutes behind Wollschlager, and Elkhart's Meredith Lee was third.
 
 Vermont City Marathon

   Vermont City Marathon runner recovers from collapse (The Burlington Free Press)
When Vermont City Marathon competitor Hardin Watkins woke up early Monday in the Intensive Care Unit, his first question was if he finished the race. In his eighth Vermont City Marathon, Watkins suffered from heat stroke as his internal body temperature hit 108.5 degrees after he collapsed fifty yards from the finish line. Watkins who finished in a 5:06:43 was fortunate to have been close to medical help when he collapsed.
