Slater Fletcher is inching closer to overall leader Ted Devito of Big Bear Lake in the Conquer the Bear extreme sport challenge. The two athletes are separated by only six minutes with the marathon event to be contested on September 12 at the Run the Bear Marathon.

   Deseret Marathon/10K/5K race registrations near deadline (Deseret News)
Saturday is the last day to register for the Deseret News Marathon and accompanying events. Late registration takes place on July 22 from 4 to 9 pm and again on July 23 from 11 am to 6 pm at the EnergySolutions Arena. Late registration for the 26.2 mile race is 65 dollars.

Sir Roger Banister had the first sub 4 minute mile and now Geoff Roes of Junea Alaska has claimed the first sub 3 hour Crow Pass Marathon which many Alaskans felt would never be busted. Roes crushed the "just shy of a marathon" course in 2 hours 57 minutes and 11 seconds which shattered the previous record of 3 hours and 5 minutes.

Lisa Tamati was the eighth woman to cross the finish line at the Badwater Ultra Marathon. She was one hour faster than her 2008 performance as she battled extreme fatigue and hallucinations in temperatures that soared into the one-hundred and twenty degree range.
