Jim Santomier asked Keith West to sponsor a "long distance" race in 1969 and forty-years later the Deseret News Marathon is still running strong. The first year saw 43 finishers and the tradition of holding a marathon on Pioneer Day continues.

   Cheruiyot and Kigen to meet in Frankfurt Marathon (Sporting Life)
Robert Cheruiyot will take on fellow countrymen Wilfred Kigen at the Frankfurt Marathon on October 25. Cheruiyot, running in his first marathon last year, set a course record of 2 hours 7 minutes and 21 seconds eclipsing Kigen's record by 37 seconds.
 
 Grandfather Mountain Marathon

   Cowie Wins The 2009 Grandfather Mountain Marathon (Blue Ridge Parkway Guide)
Steve Cowie from Greensboro North Carolina won the forty-second annual Grandfather Mountain marathon with a time of 2 hours 46 minutes and 31 seconds. Cowie, a civil engineer, trained about one-hundred miles a week getting ready for the event.

   Oswestry runner 'hits wall' in first marathon at Great Wall Marathon (Advertizer)
Joshua Alston ran the Great Wall Marathon as his first marathon. The marathon has over three-thousand, seven-hundred steps along the 26.2 mile course and Alston won his age group with a time of 4 hours, 34 minutes and placed 27th out of more than 800 runners.

The Houston Marathon closed open registration for all events in just two and one half days after registration opened. Steven Karpas stated that people who were unable to get into the race last year seemed to rush to get into the race this year.

His PR of 2 hours, 5 minutes and 10 seconds will be his focus at the 2009 Chicago Marathon where Wanjiru hopes to not only break his own record but set a new world record on the flat and fast course.

The 24th annual City of Los Angeles Marathon has been unanimously voted by the city council to be moved back to March on the 21st. The new date and "stadium to sea" route is hoped to bring in a new record number of runners after a decline in participation in 2009

With registration for the Houston Marathon filled to capacity and the hysteria over, at least until race day, many runners sat up late to hit the registration lines at precisely at 12:01 am. The overwhelming surge in registrants cause the sign-up site to crash. The transfer clause enacted for the 2010 race caused a flurry of registrants to stay up for the early morning registration to ensure their opportunity to snatch one of the twenty-two thousand spots.

Frank Levine ran his first marathon at age 65 and thirty years later he is setting world records. Levine set an age group record on the track in the 5000 meter event with a time of 50 minutes and 10 seconds. The 95 year-old plans on running until he reaches "120".

Ashis Roy completed his seventh marathon for 2009 by placing second in the 70 plus age division at the Friendly Massey Marathon in Canada. The oldest competitor, Roy, ran the 42 kilometer race in 6 hours and 43 minutes which was 6 minutes slower than his Niagara-on-the-Lake Marathon four weeks ago.

Two-thousand runners participated in the Pattaya Marathon on Sunday July 19. The marathon race began at ten minutes after four in the morning with Micah Kipserem Chuma, of Kenya, winning the race with a time of 2 hours 22 minutes and 38 seconds.
