   Signup for the Big Bear Grizzly Marathon (Big Bear Grizzly.net)
Cheryl Zwarkoski will have sign ups available this weekend for the September 6th Inaugural Big Bear Marathon. The race day will also include a half marathon, 5k, kids 1k and a bike tour.

   Sell, Ritzenhein geared up for the Beijing Games (Detroit Free Press)
Brian Sell, Hansons-Brooks runner on the 2008 U.S. Men's Olympic team, has been leading his life as he normally does working in the garden department of Home Depot and moving the grass after an early morning high mileage run to prepare for the Olympic Games. Both he and fellow teammate Dathan Ritzenhein will wear a cooling vest designed to lower body temperature similar to those worn at the 2004 Athens Games. Both have been training in conditions mimicking the heat and humidity of Beijing.
 
   China announces emergency Olympics smog plan (CNN)
With the 2008 Beijing Olympics just over a week away, China has put in emergency measures to deal with the smog calling for more factories to close, a complete halt to all construction projects and further reduction of the number of vehicles on the streets at any one time. Doctors say high levels of pollution can hurt performance, especially for endurance athletes like marathon runners, who breathe in more than ten times the amount of air of an average person. The pollution will cause inflammation and irritation to the lungs and aggravate existing asthma conditions.

   Helsinki marathon challenge in memory of cousin (Halifax Evening Courier)
Stephen Todd is running his first marathon at the Helsinki Marathon in memory of his cousin who died just four days before his sixteenth birthday. The charity he is running with Next Step Trust provides help to young people with both mental and physical special needs when they leave school at nineteen and Government support ends.

   Dallas White Rock Marathon Selected As Texas Championship Race (dBusiness)
The Dallas White Rock Marathon has been selected as the Texas State Marathon Championship Race for the first time in 38 years by the Road Runners Club of America. The race has been capped at 17,000 registrants which is up 2,000 from last year.

   Gebrselassie to take part in first Great Australian Run (IAAF)
Touted as the greatest distance runner of all time, Haile Gebrselassie will take on Australia’s Craig Mottram at the inaugural Great Australian Run on November 30, 2008. Gebrselassie chose the race due to fond memories of the 2000 Sydney Games and the link between Ethiopia and Australia in that Ethiopian athletes competed in their first Olympics at the 1956 Games in Melbourne. The Great Australian Run will take place over a 15 kilometer route

   Sisters return to Storm Lake to run in first half-marathon (Pilot Tribune)
Jill Kestel was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia when she was a freshman in high school in 1997 at St. Mary's. Today is she is training with her younger sister for the "Jump Right in and Run Storm Lake" half marathon. She will follow that training up with the Arizona R'N'R Marathon in January. Kestel says she feels lucky to train after all that she has been through

   Beijing Olympics Men's Marathon Preview (IAAF)
The men's field at the 2008 Beijing Olympics will have several strong medal contenders such as Ethiopians Deribe Merga and Tsegaye Kebebe, Kenyans Martin Lel, Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot and Samuel Wanjiru, and American Ryan Hall. Defending Olympic champion Stefano Baldini will also be returning, but his fitness levels have been marred by several injuries since the 2004 Athens Games.

With the Beijing Olympic Games less than one week away, athletes have warned that they will wear red contacts to help see through the smog and others have adorned masks to help them breathe in the smog filled conditions. The acrid smog and choking air is a far cry from what the first Olympians experienced.

   Marathon world record holder Radcliffe to join up with Britain's Olympic team on Sunday (SI.com)
Marathon World Record Holder Paula Radcliffe will join her Olympic Team in Britain on Sunday. Radcliffe withdrew from the London Marathon due to a toe injury early this year. It was thought she may have to pull out of the August 17 Olympic Marathon. She will pursue a medal at the games according to her coach.

   Spain more concerned with heat and humidity than pollution (The Star Online)
Spanish athletics chief Jose Maria Odriozola stated that pollution in Beijing will be the least of his athletes concerns. The heat and humidity, however, will be the largest challenge. Marathon runner Jose Maria “Chema” Martinez stated that the condition will be extremely difficult and that staying hope would be a better choice.

   Beijing Olympics Women's Marathon Preview (IAAF)
Reigning champion Mizuki Noguchi of Japan, Kenyan Catherine Ndereba the silver medallist, and American Deena Kastor who finished third at the 2004 Athens Games will return to Beijing in attempts to earn another medal in the marathon distance. The field is full of strong competitors including World Record Holder Paula Radcliffe, Ethiopians Gete Wami and Berhane Adere and Japan's Reiko Tosa. The women's race will take place on August 17.

   Carrollton Charity Road Race Director Craig Douglas Sets a Good Example (M Live)
The superintendent of Carrollton Schools as well as the director of the Carrollton Charity Road Race, the 56-year old Concord native had been known to run the marathon at the event he has coordinated for each of the last nine years. However, starting two years ago and continuing this year he felt it best to conserve more of his energy so that he could better focus on his duties as race director.

   Ryan, Ray-McWhinney win Volcano Marathon divisions (Honolulu Advertiser)
Alan Ryan of Laupahoehoe, Hawaii won the redirected Volcano Marathon on the island. He covered the 26.2-mile course in 3 hours, 20 minutes and 55 seconds. The overall female finisher was Amy Ray-McWhinney of Keaau, with a time of 4 hours, 9 minutes and 29 seconds. Due to heavy volcanic activity the course was altered to avoid new lava flows.

   Paula Radcliffe steps up her marathon training for the Beijing Olympics (Telegraph)
After suffering a stress fracture that nearly forced Paula Radcliffe to abandon her Olympic dreams, the 34 year old is said to be in full Olympic training mode. She is cramming months of training into just a few weeks. She has employed the use of a gravity reducing treadmill and pool running. She will travel back Great Britain to join the training in Macau.

Icelandic physician and runner Trausti Valdimarsson won the Great Tibetan Marathon last weekend. According to Forbes, the marathon, which takes place in an altitude of 3,800 meters above sea level, is the most difficult in the world.

After four days behind bars, Israeli Olympic marathon runner Haile Satayin was released from prison in Gondar, Ethiopia, on Thursday.

Ethiopia ’s preparations for the 2008 Beijing Olympics has been meeting with team conflicts. Following a physical fight between Bezunesh Bekele and 2008 Bonston Marathon winner Dire Tune over who deserves the last Olympic spot on the team, men's marathoner Tessema Abshiro aimed a gun at Olympic hopeful Deriba Merga. Ethiopia has yet to officially release their team.

Utah women led the took the top spots in the 2008 Deseret News Marathon.
 
   Deseret News Marathon: Chirlee Outruns Injury, Field To Win Race (Deseret News)
Joseph Chirlee won the Deseret News Marathon in a time of 2:18:16, beating Jynocel Basweti who was second in 2:19:31 and Edward Korir rounded who finished third in 2:19:51. Four-time winner Jonathan Ndambuki finished fourth in 2:20:33. .

   Israeli Olympian Ayele Seteng Arrested In Ethiopia (JTA Daily)
Ayele Seteng, who is set to represent Israel in the Marathon at the 2008 Olympic, was arrested in his native country Ethiopia. Israeli Sports Minister Raleb Majadele is hoping Ethiopian authorities can expedite the proceedings so Seteng will not miss the Olympics.
