		Registration figures up for 2008 Air Force Marathon (Air Force Materiel Command) Registration figures for the 2008 U.S. Air Force Marathon is on track for surpassing last year's record of 6,700 participants. Marathon Race Director, Molly Louden, is expecting upwards of 10,000 runners. As an added bonus, runners registering before Aug. 15 will have their first name placed on their bib so spectators along the route in all the races can encourage the runner by name to keep going.

		Austin Marathon Relay Issues $100,000 Challenge to Runners (CNN Martket Watch) The Roger Beasley Porsche Sub 2 Challenge has announced a $100,000 prize purse to the team that can set a record pace at the Silicon Labs Austin Marathon Relay on September 21 and clock a final time of less than two hours on the 26.2 mile course. This prize purse is incentive to encourage participation by elite athletes and to provide spectators an opportunity to see these athletes compete in a unique event. Marathon relay participants will need to average four and a half minute per mile pace on a road course that traverses downtown Austin.

		Cayman Islands Marathon helps young and sick (The Cay Compass) Caymans youth will benefit greatly from funds that have been donated to the Cayman Cadet Corps and the Cancer Society by the Cayman Islands Marathon. The cadets will be using their funds to purchase musical instruments and bolster a diploma in Music. The Cancer Society will be using its funds to launch a new campaign in the schools which will promote the importance of, and the need for more shaded areas on school campuses.

		Columbus Marathon adds 5K for corporate teams (Columbus Business First) In an effort to promote fitness and health for Ohioans, several Central Ohio corporations are encuraging employees to participate in the inaugural Columbus Marathon 5K which will be held in conjunction with the marathon and half marathon. With Nationwide Better Health as title sponsor of the marathon for the second consecutive year, the program entitled "Step-by-Step Challenge" will also provide training programs for marathoners.

		Meissner, Shelton take Crater Lake run (Mail Tribune) The 2008 Crater Lake Rim saw upset in the men's race as leader Chuck Engle missed a turnaround two miles from the finish line and Sean Meissner won in 2:55:47. Todd Ragsdale was runner-up for the second straight year. In the women's race Jenn Shelton who received a late entry at the thirteenth hour won in 3:15.01 setting a new course record. Shelton who was injured and out-of-shape was never challenged in the race. Abigail Stephens was runner-up over twelve minutes behind.

		Marathon time in Big Bear (Big Bear Grizzly) Time is running out to enter the Big Bear Marathon which is set for September 6. More than 3,500 entries have already been accepted. The Big Bear Marathon course circles the lake. While the race covers slightly rolling hills over a relatively flat course, the challenge will be running at elevations exceeding 6,900 feet.

		Haulin Aspen Marathon a tough climb, not a walk in the park (Bend Bulletin.com) The women's race of the 2008 Haulin' Aspen Marathon whose course gains 2,500 feet in elevation was won in 3:14:13 by three-time champion, Kami Semick. Semick won unchallenged as runner-up Heather Daniel finished in 3:37:18 and third-place female finisher was Anna Tall in 4:27:09. The mens marathon was won by Timothy Vandervlugt who also set a new course record in 3:03:17. Douglas Lang was second in a time of 3:10:22 and Gerad Dean third in 3:10:58.

		Isle of Man Marathon Champ is marathon master (Manx Radio) The 2008 Salclear Isle of Man Marathon was won by master's runner Murray Lambden in a 2:47.49. Paul Curtis was second in 2:58.00 and Mike Garrett finished third. In the women's race Rebecca Johnson won her second marathon in 3:08.52 followed by Claire Danson and Elizabeth McGowan.

		Lake Tahoe Marathon offers free Kids' Fun Runs Sept. 27 (Tahoe.com) Sautrday, September 27 is dedicated to kids at the Lake Tahoe Marathon. The family-friendly event hosts a series of free Kids Fun Runs for toddlers to age 12, 1 p.m., at Pope Beach in South Lake Tahoe, California. Children race in one- year age groups from a few yards to a mile. Other events for adults include the three marathons in three days around Lake Tahoe.

		Lake Tahoe Marathon offers speed golf (Lake Tahoe News) Lake Tahoe Marathon is offering Speed Golf as part of the Lake Tahoe Marathon Race Week which includes a number of running events along with biking and triathlon competitions. Speed Golf will take place Thursday, Sept. 25 at the Tahoe Paradise Golf Course. Participants run the 18-hole course, a distance of approximately 4K, carrying three golf clubs of their choice. Their overall score is a combination of the stroke plus run time.

		Jobes Family Running to help VIA at the Lehigh Valley Hospital Marathon (The Morning Call) Mark and Kathleen Jobes will be running Rodale sponsored Lehigh Valley Marathon to raise money for the VIA of the Lehigh Valley. The VIA is able to provide vital services that help people with disabilities live and connect in the community. The race is the only marathon and relay race in the Valley on one of the best trails in the area.

		New O.C. Marathon route makes more sense (O. C. Register) Scott Baugh, chairman of the O.C. Marathon, is nearly complete with his deal for the new course for the marathon. More coast line views and a flatter course are the goals. Baugh hopes to make O.C. a destination marathon and show off more towns along the route. The date has also been moved from January to May 3 for the 2009 edition of the 26.2 mile race.

		Tola, Masai win in Falmouth Road Race (Cape Cod Online) Tadese Tola of Ethiopia won the seven mile 2008 CIGNA Falmouth Road Race in 32:07 edging out U.S. Olympian Meb Keflezighi. Edith Masai who is also a masters runner won the women's race followed by Lyudmila Biktasheva. The defending champions, Micah Kogo and Catherine Ndereba, are in Beijing as members of the Kenyan Olympic team.
		Tola takes Falmouth Road Race (Wicked Local) Tadese Tola of Ethiopia won the 2008 Falmouth Road Race in 32:07 beating U.S. Olympian Meb Keflezighi and Kenyan Boaz Cheboiywo. Edith Masia of Kenya won the Women's race. Falmouth Road Race is seven miles.

		Sky Marathon Runner Carpenter is Springs' 17th Most Influential (The Gazette) Matt Carpenter is a name that should be on the minds of any runner. He is not an Olympic Runner but probably could be if all of the distance events were held about 14,000 feet. Carpenter has run and won so called sky-races throughout the U.S. including shattering the Western States 100 course record by over one hour.

The U.S. Cyclists who landed in China with face masks on later apologized for their action. Thick smog still covers the city of Beijing despite efforts to shut down factories and halt traffic.
		Seven Marathons in Seven Days for Cirencester RFC & Local Army Personnel (Rugby Football Union) Members of Cirencester Rugby Club and Army personnel from the Gloucestershire area are embarking on a challenge of a lifetime later this month.During the marathons all participants will be wearing Army bergans containing 30 lbs in weight and they will take in routes designed by the Army.

		Chinese hope pre-Games environmental cleanup is a fresh start (L A Times) Factories have been closed and 1.5 million cars have been ordered off the streets in preparation for the Games. 		Third batch of Kenyan contingent arrives in Beijing for the Olympics (Kenya Broadcasting Company) Acclimating to the climate and training elsewhere, distance runners from Kenya are slowly arriving to Beijing. The Women's Marathon team consisting of world marathon champion and Athens Olympics silver medallist Catherine Ndereba, Martha Komu and Selina Kosgey have one week before their race. Kenya's men's marathon team of London marathon champion Martin Lel, Chicago marathon champion Robert Cheruiyot, world champion Luke Kibet and world half marathon record holder Samuel Wanjiru is expected in Beijing on the 17th August 2008.

Ethiopia made their presence known when when a shoeless Abebe Bikila won the 1960 marathon gold in Rome. Kenyan dominated the distance running circuit in the 1970s.

		Beijing Olympics: Radcliffe remains on course for marathon (Guardian UK) Paula Radcliffe, who suffered a stress fracture of the femur bone in late spring, could have used another five weeks to be ready for the Olympic marathon in Beijing. Still haunted by dropping out of the Athens Games while in peak condition and health, Radcliffe is determined to finish and not relive her nightmare. As the world record holder in the marathon, she still will try to medal.
		Defending champ Noguchi withdraws from Olympic Marathon (Guardian UK) Women's Olympic marathon champion Mizuki Noguchi from Japan has withdrawn her entry to the 2008 Beijing Games. Noguchi left altitude training prematurely a week ago citing muscle fatigue. Although no further medical explanation was given, the Japanese Federation have declared her unfit to participate.

		Lisa Weightman on a Beijing Olympic Marathon mission (Preston Leader) Australian Lisa Weightman is ready to compete for her nation in the marathon at the 2008 Beijing Games despite seven stress fractures over the past ten years. Weightman has been able to train well leading up to the race, with 150km a week and running in a heat chamber. She feels prepared especially with her loved ones behind her.
